Biography

"Second-best won't cut it. Everything I do is for the sake of being number one!"

Beyond arrogant! This hothead hates to lose.

Unyielding, strong-willed, and cheeky, she wants to be number one at everything she does. She usually plays the role of the perfect, mild-mannered honor student, but the truth is that she hates losing more than anything else. If it'll help her be number one, she'll go through any training—no matter how grueling. She sees her rather showy roommate Vodka as both her motivation and her rival.[1]

She faithfully writes fan letters to her favorite manga author.

Appearance

Daiwa Scarlet wears her orange-red hair in two knee-length twintails. Her twintails are tied with fluffy blue hairties, with a pink ribbon adorning her left ear. She has two ahoges framing her face, and on top of her head is a tiara with a blue gemstone in the middle. Her sharp eyes are hot pink, with black pointed pupils.

Her race outfit is a royal blue dress, adorned with golden trim. The top of the dress is white with ruffles going down the center, and around her neck is a dark blue ribbon. Her shoulders are clad in golden Epaulettes, with a gold tassel hung off of her right shoulder. The dress' sleeves reach her wrists, and the cuffs are white with royal blue stripes. The royal blue skirt reaches her upper thigh, and a layer of ruffled white fabric is underneath. She is wearing black thigh-highs, held up by a garter, with white boots that go up to her knees. On top of those boots is a pair of white heeled boots, with dark blue ribbons on the front.

Relationships

  • Vodka - Roommate, rival, and classmate. The two first met after being paired together as roommates, but their conflicting personalities led to them bickering constantly, which drove them to become rivals on the track. Scarlet thinks Vodka is naive and tends to get annoyed by Vodka's loud and childish behavior, but ultimately cares about her, despite her refusal to admit it.
    • Their relationship is inspired by the pair's rivalry in real life, racing against each other in five graded races, with both horses taking home two wins each: the 2007 Tulip Sho and 2008 Tenno Sho (Autumn) for Vodka, the Oka Sho and Shuka Sho for Scarlet in 2007, and one draw in the 2007 Arima Kinen, although Daiwa Scarlet placed higher than Vodka in the Arima Kinen.
    • The two are also teammates on the anime-only team, Team Spica.
  • Aston Machan - Friend and classmate. They both get along well, and Scarlet sees her as a notable rival. Scarlet also shows concern for her at times, like when Machan disappears from time to time. Machan appreciates her friendship, and makes her participate in the films she makes.
    • IRL, Daiwa Scarlet, Vodka and Aston Machan are members of the "Big Three" of the 2007 Classic filly racers.
  • Dream Journey - Friend. They play chess together, and Dream Journey gives her chess tips and tricks.
  • Agnes Tachyon - Role model. Scarlet is one of the few students at Tracen that is actually intrigued by Agnes Tachyon's experiments, even volunteering to be her test subject on occasion. She admires Tachyon's intelligence, and tends to overwhelm Tachyon with her blind enthusiasm.
    • IRL, Daiwa Scarlet was sired by Agnes Tachyon.
  • Eishin Flash - Friend.
    • In real life, the two foaled a child together named "Umbrella Date."
      • This is referenced in a Trackblazer scenario where Scarlet and Flash share an umbrella during a rainy day, and go to the track to watch a younger Umamusume that they have grown fond of race and win.
  • Air Groove - Upperclassman. Scarlet admires Air Groove despite how frightening when she is fearless and often asks her for guidance to better herself as a racer as well confiding her troubles.
  • Mejiro Ryan - Friend. Scarlet shares her romances manga to Ryan, who is an avid reader of romance manga.
  • Special Week, Silence Suzuka, Tokai Teio, Gold Ship, Kitasan Black, Mejiro McQueen - Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Spica.
  • Buena Vista, Believe, Win Variation - Teammates under Kitahara's Team in Cinderella Gray.
    • They had all been ridden by the jockey Katsumi Ando, who Kitahara is based on, at some point in their careers. Ando rode Daiwa Scarlet from start to finish, never placing lower than second. Daiwa Scarlet in particular (alongside her older half brother, Daiwa Major) are considered to be Ando's representative horses.

Trivia

  • Her initial character profile was uploaded on the official Twitter account on March 8, 2017 with her voice actress, Chisa Kimura.
  • She looks up to Agnes Tachyon which is her sire in real life.
  • Scarlet's phone background is an image of a flower bouquet as a reference to her real-life dam (mother), Scarlet Bouquet.[3]
    • On a similar note, in the 6th chapter of her Character Story, while choosing a gift for her mother, the player trainer suggests offering a bouquet of flowers, which also references Scarlet Bouquet.
  • During Daiwa Scarlet's Career Mode storyline in the game, she by default has the Japanese Oaks as one of her career goals to continue the Triple Tiara. However, the player may opt to enter her in the Japanese Derby instead in order to compete directly with Vodka. In the real life, Scarlet did not participate in either race due to illness.[4]
  • In the OVA of Season 1, Scarlet is shown to have acquired an eye injury due to a wood chip hitting her eye. This event occurred in real life during training before her participation in the 2008 February Stakes, resulting in a diagnosis of wound keratitis, and Scarlet was withdrawn in that race.[5]
  • "Umamusume: Pretty Derby Artworks Vol.1" explains why her character designer made specific choices when designing her in relation to her real-life counterpart, which were as follows:
    • As she was rivals with Vodka, her race outfit was designed to be neat and elegant, a direct contrast to Vodka's cool and sleek race outfit.
    • Her tiara has four pearls atop the crests, representing her four G1 wins.
    • The white with two blue stripes pattern on her cuffs and long boots are in reference to the bandages her counterpart wore during races.
  • Daiwa Scarlet's final race with Vodka was during the 2008 Tenno Sho (Autumn), in which Vodka famously beat her by a margin of 2cm. Because of this, Daiwa Scarlet is 2cm shorter than Vodka.
  • Despite the real horse having a visible blaze in real life, this was not incorporated into her Umamusume design.
