Biography
"Life is an experiment, and we its guinea pigs. You, me, the other Umamusume—everyone!"
A mad scientist who fears no law. Weaknesses of the flesh can be overcome!
Equal parts researcher and runner, Agnes Tachyon pursues the limits of speed with the power of science. She will stop at nothing to quench her pure thirst for knowledge, performing all manner of experiments on living subjects—unauthorized, dangerous experiments, at that. Her extreme tunnel vision means that without someone to support her, day-to-day necessities quickly fall by the wayside.

Appearance
Agnes Tachyon has short brown hair, with the back section slightly curling at the ends. The middle section of her bangs falls between her eyes, while the remaining hair frames her face. She has a large ahoge that swoops in an "S" shape to the back of her head. Her ears are round and stubby, with a dark brown gradient on the tips. She wears a silver earring on her right ear in the shape of the chemical structure of indane, with the benzene ring being filled in with teal. Her eyes are dark red, with four light red lines running through them, a single black pupil in the center, and no white shine.
The most prominent part of her racing outfit is the oversized lab coat, with sleeves that completely engulf her hands, and teal and brown striped patches on the upper arms. The coat's midsection is embroidered with leather straps that hold multiple vials of a mysterious blue liquid. The hem of her lab coat is fashioned with several unzipped zippers fastened with a golden diamond emblem. Underneath her lab coat she wears a light yellow sweater with a black necktie over a black button-up shirt underneath. She wears a plain pair of black pantyhose underneath, and white, ankle-high heeled boots.
Relationships
- Jungle Pocket - Friend and rival.
- Jungle Pocket is a co-protagonist alongside Tachyon in the Beginning of a New Era. Due to Tachyon's talent, Pocket has a bit of an obsession with Tachyon, wanting to prove herself against Tachyon, and was disheartened at Tachyon's hiatus. Their rivalry begins when Pocket, undefeated since her summer debut, is defeated by Tachyon in the G1 Hopeful Stakes. Pocket brings Dantsu Flame to Tachyon's abandoned classroom to deliver a "declaration of war," which Tachyon accepts. They compete again at the Satsuki Sho, where Tachyon wins by a landslide. Shortly after, Tachyon announces her indefinite racing hiatus due to a leg injury. In Pocket's mind, Tachyon becomes stuck ahead of her, always outrunning her. The official synopsis describes this as "a looming specter—the final barrier that stands between Pocket and her dream."
- In actual horse racing history, Agnes Tachyon and Jungle Pocket raced against each other only twice. It created one of the most dramatic contrasts and rivalry in Japanese racing, with Agnes Tachyon became a legendary "Phantom Triple Crown Winner" despite running only four races in his entire career, his exceptional dominance was matched only by his tragic early retirement. Jungle Pocket, however, had a longer career, achieving 5 wins from 13 starts including the Japanese Derby and the Japan Cup, earning ¥704,258,000 in total. He also notably earned the 2001 JRA Award for Best 3-Year-Old Colt, despite fighting in Tachyon's shadow for much of the year. "Jungle Tachyon" (a horse sired by Jungle Pocket and damsired by Agnes Tachyon) was also bred, creating additional genetic ties between the two competitors.
- Manhattan Cafe - Classmate, rival, and ...friend? The two spend a lot of time together, with Tachyon constantly harassing Cafe to be her guinea pig, and Cafe frequently having to turn her down, as well as getting Tachyon out of messes. The two have made an abandoned classroom a shared hangout space. Despite their differences, they both care for one another. Cafe gets concerned for her when she tries to drop out of Tracen Academy, while Tachyon attempts to stop her from going to France in Cafe's career story. Cafe is also the only person she doesn't refer to with the "-kun" suffix, showcasing that Tachyon has a unique level of respect for her. Cafe is also the only person who can intimidate Tachyon.
- Tachyon enjoys drinking tea (with a lot of added sugar due to her hatred of bitter flavors), while Cafe prefers coffee. In the Beginning of a New Era film, Cafe eventually distances herself from Tachyon after becoming fed up with her obsessive attitude toward watching her peers' races from the stands rather than participating. Their relationship embodies a "Science vs. Supernatural" dynamic, Tachyon the mad scientist seeking "Umamusume limits," and Cafe the shadowy girl who speaks with an invisible "friend".
- In actual horse racing history, Agnes Tachyon and Manhattan Cafe were half-brothers, both sired by Sunday Silence. However, they had different dams, making them paternal half-siblings rather than full siblings. Agnes Tachyon (1998–2009) was out of Agnes Flora, while Manhattan Cafe (1998–2015) was out of Subtle Change. The two horses raced against each other once at the 2001 Yayoi Sho, where Agnes Tachyon won by five lengths while a sickly Manhattan Cafe finished fourth.
- Dantsu Flame - Friend and rival.
- In Beginning of a New Era, after Tachyon wins the Satsuki Sho overwhelmingly (with Dantsu 2nd, Pocket 3rd), Tachyon suddenly retires. Dantsu tries to argue with Tachyon, but hearing Tachyon's "bizarre logic," she scolds her while "almost on the verge of tears": "I can't understand why you'd give up running when you have that much talent... Even without you, we'll keep running." Dantsu trains intensely for the Derby "without Tachyon," pulling an incredibly large tire, but loses to Pocket again, finishing 2nd. Dantsu serves as one of the four main characters alongside Tachyon, Jungle Pocket, and Manhattan Cafe.
- Daiwa Scarlet - Scarlet admires Tachyon, Scarlet is one of the few students actually intrigued by Tachyon's experiments, even volunteering to be her test subject. Her beaming enthusiasm has overwhelmed Tachyon in the past, but Tachyon still welcomes her company.
- Tachyon is her father in real life. Daiwa Scarlet (2004–present) was born three years after Tachyon's forced retirement in 2001, representing the next generation carrying forward his genetic legacy. She won four G1 races, including the 2007 Oka Sho and 2008 Arima Kinen, becoming Agnes Tachyon's most successful progeny.
- Smart Falcon - Friends.
- Tachyon wishes to analyze Smart Falcon's potential for speed, as well as in Tachyon's words "the measurable difference in the effects of endorphins she secretes". Smart Falcon takes Tachyon's interest in her as being a huge fan, and is flattered that Tachyon wants to study her so bad. Thus, Smart Falcon happily goes along with any tests Tachyon wishes to do on her.
- Agnes Digital - Roommate.
- Usually the observer, Tachyon finds it intriguing that she is the one being "observed' by Digital. Tachyon also finds Digital's fascination with Umamusume an excellent factor in Digital's running, though Digital is hesitant to help since it would require being in close proximity to Tachyon, and that would go against Digital's "code". Tachyon and Digital aren't very close, and they both enjoy different activities. Tachyon is "somewhat put off" by Digital's fangirl enthusiasm, but doesn't harbor negative feelings; their interactions are generally friendly. The two form an interesting dynamic, as Digital honed her racing skills through dedication and determination, whereas Tachyon possesses remarkable talents but struggles with her own fragility.
- IRL, they are owned by Takao Watanabe. Agnes Tachyon (1998–2009) was one year younger and never raced against Digital.

- Silence Suzuka - Suzuka sought advice from Agnes Tachyon for her leg injury.
- In real life, both are Sunday Silence offspring whose careers ended due to leg issues. Suzuka's fatal breakdown at the 1998 Autumn Tenno Sho and Tachyon's career-ending tendonitis in 2001.
- Tanino Gimlet - The two often boast about Vodka and Daiwa Scarlet, often gloating about which one they think is best.
- This is because Vodka is Gimlet's daughter in real life, and Daiwa Scarlet is Tachyon's.
- Air Shakur - Friend. The two are often paired together due to both of them having high intelligence, with Shakur being a technological prodigy, and Tachyon being a mad scientist. Although the two share an interest in science and data, their approaches clash. Shakur derides Tachyon's romanticism while Tachyon believes Shakur's pragmatism is lacking in potential. Tachyon likes to provoke Shakur. Manhattan Cafe is "mutually annoyed by Tachyon" alongside Shakur.
- In real life, they never raced against each other. However, Agnes Tachyon's full older brother Agnes Flight competed against Air Shakur in the classics, winning in the Japanese Derby to deny Air Shakur the triple crown by 7 centimeters.
- Mejiro Ardan - Friend. They both like drinking tea together. Ardan is also unbothered by the mysterious glow the tea has when they drink together.
- Sweep Tosho - Friend. Sweep gets roped up into her experiments. Despite finding Tachyon weird, she thinks she is interesting and smart. She is also interested in the concoctions Tachyon makes, much to Tachyon's delight.
- In real life, they both had a foal together, a filly named Jewel Tosho in 2009.

Trivia
- Her initial character profile was uploaded to the official Twitter account on June 1, 2017.
- This tweet was a character name prediction quiz, that encouraged fans to try and guess which horse she's named after. The hint was "Super genius Umamusume. Because of her high intelligence and ability, she has yet to show her true potential, and nobody knows her true power......."
- "Umamusume: Pretty Derby Artworks Vol.1" explains why her character designer made specific choices when designing her in relation to her real-life counterpart, which were as follows:
- The blue vials of liquid held to her lab coat with red stripes are intended to represent the sleeves of her real-life counterpart's jockey silk, which are red with blue stripes.
- Her earrings having both a hexagon and a pentagon are representative of her mother, Agnes Flora, winning five out of the six races she ran in.
- The diamond shape on the zippers of her lab coat has four sides, representative of her winning all four races she ran in.
- Tachyon's special skill name in-game is "U=ma²," a reference to Albert Einstein's Mass—Energy equivalence equation, E=mc².
- The trio consisting of Jungle Pocket, Agnes Tachyon, and Manhattan Cafe, the three winners of the 2001 Classic Triple Crown races in real life, is often referred to as "JAM." When Dantsu Flame is included, the resulting quadruplet is called "JDAM" (by Japanese fans) or "JAMD" (by English fans).
- She enjoys drinking tea, in contrast to Manhattan Cafe, who likes coffee. She drinks her tea with a lot of added sugar, due to her hatred of bitter flavors. This is showcased in Agnes Tachyon's SR Power card.
- In Tachyon's career, her goal after the Satsuki Sho depends on her mood during that race. If it is Good or above, her goal remains the Japanese Derby, but if it is Normal or lower, she decides to run in the NHK Mile Cup instead due to not feeling well enough to run a longer race.
- Since Tachyon has a starting mile aptitude of D, she is likely to fail this goal without raising the aptitude. This may be intended to recreate how the real-life Agnes Tachyon had to skip the Derby and later retire due to tendonitis.
- In chapter 2 of Tachyon's character story, a trainer remarks that everyone had high expectations of her due to her mother winning the Oka Sho and her grandmother winning the Japanese Oaks. This is consistent with reality, where Agnes Flora won the Oka Sho in 1990, and Agnes Lady won the Japanese Oaks in 1979.
