Kitasan Black is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. She is a supporting character on Season 2 of the anime, and co-protagonist of Season 3 alongside Satono Diamond.
Biography
"I'll give it a go! You'll never know unless you try, right?"
Her smile brightens the room. A festival-loving bucket of sunshine.
Ever bright and cheerful, she loves festivals more than anyone else. Her innate altruism makes her unable to ignore a person in need, and she's always ready to lend an ear. Her bottomless kindness has earned her the admiration of those around her, but when she gets too excited, her words take on a certain festival flair. With a smile as bright as the sun, she continues to run towards the dazzling horizon, hoping that she will discover her true dream along the way.

Appearance
Kitasan Black has shoulder-length black hair styled in a slightly layered bob cut with bangs, and a few loose strands framing her face. She has a small ahoge, half-up twintails, and a white streak of hair in the center of her bangs. On her right ear, red rope tied into a ribbon with white and pink square flower-like decorations sit at the base. On her left ear, a singular pink square flower can be found. Her cheery eyes are dark red, fading into light orange at the end.
Her racing outfit is likely inspired by a traditional yukata, with a cutesy spin to it. The base of her dress is dark gold, accented with white, light gold, and black decor. The sash around her waist is black, with a white ribbon, in the center of the white ribbon is red rope tied into a cloverleaf knot. The sleeves of her outfit are detached from her dress. She has a metal etched collar piece, with a dark purple gem in the center. On her arms, she wears yellow compression sleeves, and atop that are black yukata-style sleeves, with an elaborate Japanese-inspired red, white, and gold design. There is a layer of white underneath the sleeves as well. Atop of her base dress is a black sleeveless jacket with red trimming, the ends decorated with gold stripes, and white and pink flowers. Around her tail is a white and red ribbon, meant to resemble a shimenawa rope, tied at the end with golden beads. Kita wears a pair of black thigh-high socks, each with a small "V" shaped slit at the top, and layered with red trim. She wears red heels adorned with gold and black accents, and red ribbons tied into an "X" shape around either of her ankles.
Relationships
- Satono Diamond - Best friend/Roommate, and Rival. The two are incredibly close, with the two of them meeting when they were children and staying together ever since. The two joined Tracen at the same time, however Kitasan can be a bit jealous whenever Diamond outperforms her. Nevertheless, Kitasan is always there to support Diamond and vice versa, and the two have even promised each other they will always aim for the top, together.
- Copano Rickey - Childhood friend
- In real life, they were both raised at the same farm.
- Nice Nature - Friend. In the anime, she sees Nice Nature as a mentor figure, frequently seeking her out for advice.
- Duramente - Friend/Rival.
- IRL, in their three races, Kitasan Black has never beat nor placed higher than Duramente.
- Satono Crown - Friend/Rival.
- Tokai Teio - Friend and teammate on the anime-only team, Team Spica. Teio is Kitasan's role model and the main reason why she wanted to become a great racer. Teio often acts as a supportive senior to Kitasan, offering encouragement when she faces the pressures of the Triple Crown races. Kitasan mainly wants to be the type of person that inspires others, like Tokai Teio does for her. So she pushes herself, and thus gets frustrated when she loses, especially when racing against Teio.
- Sweep Tosho - Friend. Kitasan Black hangs out Sweep often, and is happy when Sweep uses her "magic" to cheer her up, like after a bad result on a test. Kitasan Black also plays along with Sweep's Magical Girl team, as "Magical Black".
- In real life, Sweep Tosho and Kitasan Black had a foal in 2019 named Piedra de Luna.
- Special Week, Silence Suzuka, Vodka, Daiwa Scarlet, Gold Ship, Mejiro McQueen - Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Spica.

Trivia
- She was announced during PakaLive TV on December 20, 2020, as a teaser for Season 2 of the anime.
- Her festive personality and outfit is a reference to its in-real-life counterpart's owner Kitajima Saburo, a famous Enka singer who also sung whenever Kitasan Black won a race.
- At the end of the final episode of Season One of the Anime, there is an unnamed Umamusume who the Spica Trainer interacts with, who bears a resemblance to Kitasan Black with the black hair and white streak, and red eyes, possibly being a placeholder or a prototype until the real Kitasan Black showed up in the second season.
- Throughout her first halves of the classic and senior year in her career story, Kitasan Black focuses on an Umamusume named Brusquement, who is garnering attention from the media for being part of the "Empress's Bloodline".
- This Umamusume is a reference to Duramente prior to her introduction as an actual character. However, even after Duramente was introduced, Brusquement was never replaced as Duramente herself, and it still remains so to this day in the game.
