Win Variation is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Biography

“I'll do it...! Hard work always pays off in the end!”

Win Variation is sporty, healthy, and dedicated to hard work. She has a strong desire to win and becomes as depressed as anybody else were she to fail at any point in time. However, she believes in the parable that if she falls down seven times, she will rise an eighth time. She works hard everyday to become the protagonist... No, a 'principal' that makes any story shine.

Likes Watermelon splitting, calisthenics
Dislikes Contemporary dance, walking like a model
Ears They tend to react to classical music.
Tail She might be confused when it gets touched, but she doesn't dislike it.
Family Her mother taught her how to take care of her nails.
Secrets She can walk around familiar places with her eyes closed.
She's in the camp that doesn't allow clam meat to be left behind.

Appearance

Win Variation has vibrant red hair styled in a loose and fluffy bob, with side bangs that frame her face, long bangs growing past her eyes, and a long strand of hair on either side, growing past her shoulder. She has a small white stripe of hair on the middle of her forehead. She wears white ear covers with a red stripe on each one. She has two, long, low twin-tails, each tied by a red and black bow. On her right ear, she wears a diamond-shaped accessory with a red gem and silver trim, accompanied by a white plume of feathers. Her kind eyes are dark blue that fade into a vibrant light green.

Her racing uniform is that of a ballerina. She wears a red off-shoulder ballet dress with black trims, and intricate silver decor. Two red detached sleeves sit around her upper-arm, decorated with white frills and an emerald-green diamond. Layered under her red and black dress is a puffy white skirt with a silver trim, and a layer of black ruffles underneath. Around her neck, she wears a black collar type choker, tied with a red bow with silver trim, and a green diamond in the center. She wears low-denier pantyhose underneath. On her feet are a simple pair of ballet flats, laced above her ankles. Each shoe has a silver piece of decor, and an emerald gem in the center. Her left shoe is black, while the right is colored white. She wears black gloves on both of her hands.

Relationships

  • Orfevre - Rival and friend...? Shion has an incredibly complex relationship with Orfevre, and she barely knows how to describe it herself. Her goal is to keep up with Orfevre, but she can never seem to reach the same prestige as her, and often puts herself down due to her inability. She sees herself as beneath Orfevre, and despite being labelled as "The One Who Understands Orfevre", she doesn't fully understand what Orfevre thinks of her. But, truth be told, Orfevre thinks of her fondly. In fact, Orfevre even gets upset that Shion is thinking of quitting racing, and though she claims she has no rivals, she states that no other competitor could "irritate her" more than Shion. Outside of the racetrack, Orfevre is blunt but treats her nicely compared to others. She calls her by her nickname, and Orfevre also likes the apples Shion gives her.
  • Cheval Grand - Roommate. The two can relate to each other's shortcomings very well, both having very strong inferiority complexes in relation to their powerful rivals.
    • The two share the same father in real life, Heart's Cry.
  • Verxina - Friend. The two seem to be kindred spirits, and encourage one another in times of need. Like Verxina, Win Variation is also the oldest of three sisters. However, despite Win Variation being the older one, Verxina sometimes treats her like a little sister, which annoys her.
  • Dream Journey - Friend. While Win Variation feels inferior in racing ability compared to Orfevre, Journey sees the talent in her. In fact, she even envies her for the fact that she gets to compete with Orfevre, while she is unable to due to the fact that she had stopped racing at that point.[1]
  • Daiwa Scarlet, Believe, Buena Vista - Teammates under Kitahara's Team in Cinderella Gray.
    • They had all been ridden by the jockey Katsumi Ando, who Kitahara is based on, at some point in their careers. Ando rode him for most of his classics year, up until the next year ending off with 2012's Kyoto Kinen. With Ando onboard, they won the Aoba Sho, placed 2nd against the eventual Triple Crown champion Orfevre on both the 2011 Japanese Derby and Kikuka Sho, and placed 5th behind Buena Vista and Tosen Jordan in the 2011 Japan Cup.

Trivia

  • She was announced during the 3rd Anniversary PakaLive TV stream on February 22, 2024.
  • The Umamusume Win Variation likes apples, but her in-real-life counterpart hates them.
  • In her career mode, if the player makes her race in the Satsuki Sho, the race will be held at Tokyo Racecourse instead of Nakayama Racecourse. This is a reference to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, in which it was temporarily held at Tokyo Racecourse due to the overwhelming damage as a result of the disaster.
  • She does pirouettes in the middle of the street when she's happy.
  • She uses the military sleep method to help herself sleep.
  • In one of her homescreen lines, she says that a cat punched her earlier. This is a reference to the real horse Neko Punch, who defeated Win Variation at the Nikkei Sho in 2012.
