The ultimate high roller. Lives on the edge and isn't afraid to skirt the law.

A risk junkie and rule-breaker. She used to lack drive, but under the guidance of her elementary school mentor, she discovered the adrenaline-pumping thrill of racing. She can only live on the edge, and tends to cut corners in unremarkable, everyday situations. She's not pressed by newfangled fads, instead preferring to hang out in back alleys, sharing a pot of old-school offal stew with strangers.

Appearance

Nakayama Festa has medium-length disheveled brown hair. She wears a gray beanie with two holes cut out for her ears, and the beanie has two golden triangles on the right brim. Around her right ear, she has a simple blue ring. She has magenta eyes with flat eyelids.

Her race outfit consists of a torn red shirt with two horizontal white stripes on the center, and a pair of gray ripped jeans held up by a black belt. Around her neck is a silver necklace with a single die charm in the center. She wears a long blue coat to complete the ensemble, it has elbow-length sleeves with two black belts on each arm. She wears black fingerless gloves on both hands. Her shoes are simple black and gray sneakers with white soles.

Relationships

  • Sirius Symboli - Roommate. They often get up to shenanigans together and play card games well into the night. Given that they are both "wild" lone wolf types, they get along quite naturally.
    • The real life basis for them being roommates is that they both ran in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Longchamp, France.
  • Gold Ship - Friend. Gold Ship always has something fun in store for Nakayama to engage in. Gold Ship's antics supply Nakayama with much sought after thrills while Gold Ship in turn is kept entertained, making it somewhat of a symbiotic relationship. They are often seen skulking around suspiciously looking to cause some mischief, though there are some rare moments where Nakayama may step out to be the voice of reason and keep Gold Ship in line.
  • Dream Journey - Friend. Nakayama gets along with Journey quite well, having a mutual respect for each other as kindred spirits. She also approves of her friendship with Orfevre personally, seeing her as a good influence on her little sister.
  • Orfevre - Friend. Nakayama, along with Gold Ship, often entertains Orfevre.
  • Fenomeno - Friend. Nakayama alongside Gold ship, would often team up together and prank Fenomeno.
    • IRL, Nakayama Festa, Gold Ship, Fenomeno, Dream Journey, and Orfevre are all sired by Stay Gold.
      • Nakayama Festa once defeated Dream Journey in Takarazuka Kinen in 2010.
      • Nakayama Festa and Orfevre ran in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in real life, both coming close to winning but not quite clinching it. Gold Ship also ran the L'Arc but ended up in 14th.
      • Nakayama and Fenomeno are connected through their shared main jockey, Masayoshi Ebina. Though Dream Journey was jockeyed by him a few times before, eventually Kenichi Ikezoe became Dream Journey’s main jockey.
  • Tosen Jordan - Classmate, friend and rival. Though they may not have much in common at first blush, Nakayama has an implicit respect for Jordan and sees her as a strong Umamusume in spite what anyone else may think of her. Even at her worst, she chooses to place trust in her abilities and support her while paying no mind to anyone else's opinion. She also likes to challenge Jordan to small scale and friendly bets from time to time, given the fact that Jordan won't refuse due to her hating to lose under any circumstance.
    • They are part of the same 2009 generation. They had little overlap during their careers due to Tosen Jordan suffering from chronic cracked hoof before the Classics and Nakayama Festa focusing on overseas races later in his career, but they raced once, at 2009's Chunichi Shimbun Hai.
  • El Condor Pasa - Friend and rival. Nakayama sees her as a strong opponent, going as far to provoke her to raise the stakes on herself. El also offers Nakayama guidance and advice on her overseas bid to France, as someone who had tried and failed to conquer that frontier.
    • They both ran in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in real life. In addition to that, they (along with Orfevre) both came in second in their bids, becoming figureheads of how difficult it has been for Japan to finally beat the race. Their relationship is largely built on this fact.
  • Buena Vista - Friend and rival. Nakayama would often try and cheer Buena up whenever she cries, even if most of the time her jokes don’t land well.
    • They are part of the same 2009 generation, racing each other twice. In particular, Nakayama Festa beat her and other top class racehorses in 2010's Takarazuka Kinen, netting him his first and only G1 win in quite a flashy way as he was considered the underdog among some of the other more accomplished opponents.
  • Satono Diamond - Friend. Dia looks up to Nakayama as her senior and showers her with praise.
    • They both ran in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in real life.

Trivia

  • Her initial character profile was uploaded to the official Twitter account on June 15, 2017.
    • This tweet was a character name prediction quiz that encouraged fans to try and guess which horse she was named after. The hint was "An Umamusume with a fierce fighting spirit and passion in her heart. She dreams of making her beloved violets bloom in France together with her trainer."
  • Nakayama’s hobby of growing violets is most likely a reference to their team name during the 2010 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Sumire (Violets).
    • The name of the team is also a reference to the song "When the Violets Bloom", as that was the favorite song of Nakayama’s previous owner.
    • That team name was chosen because violets symbolizes modesty and sincerity, and also bloom in places where most people may overlook them. This correlates with Nakayama’s character of being an underdog, mostly being overlooked and barely talked about.
  • Nakayama often goes to the hospital to visit someone.
    • This is a reference to Nakayama’s previous owner, who unfortunately died due to esophagus cancer.
      • Her previous owner is also referenced in Nakayama’s career as her elementary teacher who helped her realize her drive for racing.
  • She was once suspended from racing.
  • During a game of "Who is the closest to Stay Gold", Nakayama surprisingly won (much to Dream Journey’s dismay) as she sees Stay Gold as her ideal.
    • IRL, This is a reference to Nakayama Festa being Stay Gold's stablemate after his retirement.
  • Despite being referred to as ‘Nakayama’ a few people call her by ‘Festa’ that being her family, Elementary School Teacher, and eventually the trainer near the end of her career. In real life, since Nakayama is a crown name, handlers and fans alike simply call the real horse Festa.
  • Stay Gold was alluded in her career. When Gold ship and Nakayama go to a ramen shop together, both of them including the lady running the ramen shop were watching an overseas race over at Hong Kong. Gold ship and Nakayama were rooting for the ‘Silver medal Umamusume’.
  • She takes care of stray cats whenever she goes out, even going as far to provide food and milk for them.
    • Because of how often she does this, cat fur usually gets on her clothes. It’s a hassle for her, but she doesn’t mind.
  • In the homescreen, when she's wearing her Christmas-themed racewear, she says that her mother recommended putting a star on her left cheek, so her wink would look cool. This is a nod to her mother in real life, who is named Dear Wink.
  • Buena Vista was alluded multiple times in her career.
    • Two Umamusume talk about the number one favorite during the Oka Sho and mention how that racer has plans on challenging the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
    • After the Derby, the audience talked about how exciting the Oaks was, mentioning how when witnessing the race, it felt like seeing a 'breathtaking view.'
    • Nakayama also makes a comment about her, saying that she has exceptional talent that’s perfectly suited to be the heroine, and even mentions the Umamusume’s winning streak and how she was the favorite in all 6 of her races.
    • During the summer camp, the Umamusume traveled to Sapporo, but since she lost, she withdrew from the Arc.
      • IRL, when Buena Vista ran in the Sapporo Kinen, she unfortunately lost, and thus plans for making her race in the Arc were changed.
  • When her teacher fell ill, she talked about how she'd give hope to her.
    • Sirius also mentions this to her trainer that the hope for Japan winning the Arc has started to diminish.
      • This could be a reference to her IRL counterpart reigniting Japan’s hope of winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after his miraculous second-place victory.
  • In her career, when she was being interviewed, the reporters were wary of her potentially losing horribly at the Arc.
    • IRL, when Nakayama Festa was registered to join the Arc, it surprised many Japanese people that an underdog with inconsistent records could possibly put up a good fight at the Arc.
  • When she was a kid, she was quite passive.
