"Without a bad mood, he ran very well. He's a little bit rowdy, so he had trouble getting into the starting gate, but he ran smoothly once he was out. He is a strong horse, and I was hoping that he would run seriously, but he gave me 100% of his power today."
- Yoshitomi Shibata in a post-race interview[1]

Nakayama Festa is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2008 to 2011. He is best known for his long-shot victory in the 2010 Takarazuka Kinen, alongside being the closest Japanese horse to ever winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Name Origin

A combination of crown name "Nakayama" from owner Shinichi Izumi, and "Festa" for the meaning of "National holiday".

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2008)

Nakayama Festa made his debut on November 2nd, in a 1,600-meter turf race on Tokyo Racecourse. After he won his debut, he entered the Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes (G3) on November 22nd. As the 9th favorite with odds of 27.5, he earned his first graded victory and defeated the overwhelming favorite Break Run Out in a close race.

Three-year-old season (2009)

On January 18th, Nakayama Festa competed in the Keisei Hai (G3) as the overwhelming for the first and final time. However, he lost and placed 2nd, as he was unable to catch up to the horses in front. Months later, on April 19th, Nakayama Festa challenged the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Satsuki Sho. However, he ran poorly and placed 8th. In the Japanese Derby on May 31st, he fought hard, but placed 4th to the winning horse Logi Universe.

However, after nearly four months of rest, he made his return in the St. Lite Kinen (G2) on September 20th. As the 2nd favorite, he ran well, and won after numerous losses. He then ran in the Kikuka Sho on October 25th, where he placed 12th. His last race of the year was the Chunichi Shimbun Hai (G3) on December 12th, which was his first time challenging older horses. Racing with fellow generation member, Tosen Jordan, he lost and placed 13th, losing to the overwhelming favorite Earnestly. At the end of the year, due to the death of his owner, Nobuko Izumi's, her father Shinichi Izumi became his new owner.

Four-year-old season (2010)

On April 24th, Nakayama Festa started the year off with a win in the open-class Metropolitan Stakes. Later, in May, he was registered for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a foreign G1 race held in France.[2] After that, he was entered into the Takarazuka Kinen on June 27th as the 8th favorite, where numerous strong competitors gathered to challenge the race. These competitors included Dream Journey (2006 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, 2009 Takarazuka Kinen and Arima Kinen winner), Seiun Wonder (2008 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes winner), Logi Universe (2009 Japanese Derby), and Buena Vista, who not only won four G1 races at that point (2008 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, 2009 Oka Sho and Japanese Oaks, and 2010 Victoria Mile), but was also the overwhelming favorite of the race.

Starting off with odds of 37.8, Nakayama Festa began a race with a good start. During the race, Earnestly and Namura Crescent were leading the pack, as Nakayama Festa was within the very back of the pack alongside Dream Journey. As Buena Vista was ahead marking Earnestly, Nakayama Festa began to gradually advance from behind at the fourth corner. In the final straight, Buena Vista was about to overtake Earnestly, as Dream Journey was surging from behind. However, at the last 100 meters, Nakayama Festa began to rapidly accelerate, overtake all of them and won the race by a small margin. Not only was this his first and only G1 victory, this was also the first time since Grass Wonder in 1999 that a Miho-trained horse won the Takarazuka Kinen. With this victory, Nakayama Festa's team announced that he would be headed for France to compete in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.[3]

Headed for France, Nakayama Festa's expedition team was named "Team Sumire no Hana" in honor of Nobuko Izumi, as the named was inspired by Takarazuka Revue, something that she loved.[4] On September 12th, Nakayama Festa challenged the Prix Foy (G2), a trial race for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Racing well in the pack, he placed a close 2nd.

On October 3rd, Nakayama Festa competed in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as the 10th favorite. Racing from the outside, he gradually began to advance, and he was neck at neck with the winning horse Workforce. While he finished a close 2nd, his efforts were still commended for being the closest Japanese horse to winning the French race.

He returned to Japan to compete in the Japan Cup on November 28th, where he placed 14th in spite of being the 2nd favorite. Two days after the race, it was discovered that he had developed a hemorrhage in his left shoulder and his left front leg's knee, which caused him to miss out on the Arima Kinen.[5] Despite this, Nakayama Festa received the JRA Award for Best Older Male Horse at the end of the year for his efforts.

Five-year-old season (2011)

Nakayama Festa did not race in Japan, and he only raced in France in 2011. On September 11th, he once again challenged the Prix Foy (G2), where he placed 4th. Weeks later, on October 2nd, he challenged the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe again, but he placed 11th. On October 13th, it was announced that Nakayama Festa would retire to perform stud duty, and he was deregistered as a racehorse on November 2nd.[6][7]

Retirement

Nakayama Festa retired to perform stud duty at Breeders Stallion Station. His progeny has had mild success, with his son Babbitt winning the St. Lite Kinen (G2) in 2020, sharing a father-son victory. In 2019, he was moved to Arrow Stud to proceed his stud duties.[8]

On July 13th, 2023, it was announced that Nakayama Festa would be retired from stud duty, and he currently lives as a meritorious horse.[9]

Currently he now resides at Urakawa Yushun Village AERU.
