Cinderella Gray Anime Introduction
Tracen Academy's student council president. Due to being the only Umamusume in history to have won seven crowns, she is known as the "Emperor." Even after her retirement, her authority remains unshaken. Although she exudes a dignified aura, she also has a bit of a playful side.[2]
Appearance
The charismatic president of Tracen, leader of the Symboli clan, and one of the greatest to ever grace the racetrack, the Emperor, Symboli Rudolf, stands tall and proud. Her long brown hair flows gracefully down to her waist, darkening near her face and accented by a striking white blaze that streaks elegantly from the top. Adding to her regal aura, a large, ornate piece of jewelry dangles from her right ear.
Her attire commands both respect and awe, embodying the militaristic style and color scheme of the Symboli family. She dons a dark green jacket adorned with numerous medals of achievement, with silver buttons lined up in perfect uniformity. An epaulet graces her left shoulder, complemented by a flowing red cape that adds to her imperial presence. The sleeves are embellished with golden patterns and unique markings, a variation of the designs seen throughout the Symboli family. To further continue the Symboli lineage, she wears a large custom belt with a prominent silver centerpiece.
Downwards, she wears a dark green skirt with elegant ruffled hems. Her black tights feature the same gold patterns found on her sleeves and her outfit is complete with black buckled heels.
Relationships
- Tokai Teio - Underclassman. Rudolf is Tokai Teio’s ultimate idol. Rudolf also enjoys spending time talking with Teio, and often has Teio assist with tasks. Having witnessed Rudolf’s legendary undefeated Triple Crown run as a child, Teio’s primary motivation was to follow in her footsteps. While Rudolf serves as the stoic and authoritative Student Council President for the student body, she displays a noticeably softer, "parental" concern for Teio. Teio almost exclusively refers to Rudolf as "Kaicho" (President) and models her career goals entirely on Rudolf’s legacy. In season 1, Teio is introduced as Rudolf's devoted follower, often seen by her side or seeking her approval. Rudolf is shown quietly encouraging Teio's potential, viewing her as a candidate who could match her own achievements. Their relationship dynamic deepens in season 2, as when Teio faces career threatening injuries, Rudolf quietly supports her recovery and ultimate comeback. As Teio preps for her return in the Arima Kinen, Rudolf calls out her name and quietly cries tears of pride when Teio's victory is confirmed. Their bond is reinforced through shared costume design elements (cape, epaulettes and cravats, arrow motifs) and numerous affectionate interactions across the Umamusume franchise.
- In real life, Symboli Rudolf is Teio's sire (father). Tokai Teio, foaled in 1988, was named with the word "Teio" (帝王, meaning "monarch") specifically in reference to his father's imperial title, "Emperor" (皇帝, Kōtei). This naming convention reflected the high expectations placed upon him as Rudolf's most successful offspring. Both horses shared incredible careers and historical parallels. Teio won the Japan Cup in 1992, exactly seven years after his father won the same race in 1985. Teio also was jockeyed by Yukio Okabe, the same jockey who rode Symboli Rudolf to his Triple Crown victories, creating another layer of continuity between father and son.
- Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi - Underclassman. Similar to Teio, Tsuyoshi also idolizes Rudolf, and wishes to be a Triple Crown winner as well, though her condition is a persistent obstacle to that goal. Rudolf is also one of the few people to just call her Tsuyoshi, as others simply call her Tsuru.
- In real life, as with Tokai Teio, Symboli Rudolf is also Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi's sire.
- Air Groove - Friend and student council co-member. Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Rigil. Symboli Rudolf and Air Groove form the core leadership duo of Tracen Academy's student council, with Rudolf serving as President and Air Groove as Vice President. A recurring element of their interactions involves Rudolf making elaborate puns that Air Groove struggles to comprehend fast enough, leading to comedic frustration directed at herself rather than Rudolf. Despite this, Air Groove deeply respects Rudolf's leadership and the two work closely together in managing the student body.
- In real life, The two horses never raced against each other, as Rudolf retired in 1985 and Air Groove began racing a decade later in 1995.
- Narita Brian - Fellow student council co-member. Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Rigil. Symboli Rudolf and Narita Brian serve as President and Vice President respectively of Tracen Academy's student council, forming part of the institution's core leadership alongside Air Groove. Rudolf and Brian run Tracen's student council as President and Vice President, working alongside Air Groove as part of the school's leadership team. Both belong to Team Rigil, though their dynamic is more professional than personal. There is mutual respect rather than much warmth. Rudolf apparently handpicked Brian for the role because she represents pure racing talent and potential. In Rudolf's eyes, Brian has what it takes to eventually step up as the academy's next standard-bearer.
- In real life, Symboli Rudolf and Narita Brian had no biological relationship. The two horses never competed against each other either, as Rudolf retired in 1985, six years before Narita Brian's birth. Both, however, achieved the prestigious Triple Crown. The two horses also experienced career-altering injuries. Rudolf's international race injury led to retirement, while Brian's hip joint disease and subsequent tendonitis stopped what could have been an even more dominant career. This shared "what if" element adds a layer to their relationship in the series, as both understand the fragility of greatness and the burden of unfulfilled potential.
- Special Week - Underclassman. Spe truly respects Rudolf as an undefeated Triple Crown champion and President. Rudolf also finds Spe's earnest hard working personality and optimism admirable and expects great things from her.
- Mr. C.B. - Rival. Rudolf has displayed jealousy towards Mr. C.B.'s charismatic, free-spirited popularity. Mr. C.B. also maintains an "unbounded" racing philosophy that diverges with Rudolf's disciplined style and authority. Both are recognized as champions who defined their era. Mr. C.B. frequently appears in a trio with Katsuragi Ace and Rudolf, creating a dynamic where Rudolf's dignified composure clashes with Mr. C.B.'s impulsive nature. Despite their rivalry, moments of mutual respect pop up, especially when mentoring younger generations of racers.
- IRL - A rare occurrence of back-to-back Triple Crown winners, with Mr. C.B. bearing the 1983 Triple Crown and Rudolf, the 1984 Triple Crown. The consecutive victories marked the first time since Shinzan's 1964 triumph that the sport had produced Triple Crown winners in successive years. These back to back accomplishments created enormous anticipation for their matchups. They raced against each other a few times, each time Rudolf beating out or placing higher than Mr. C.B.
- Katsuragi Ace - Rival. Rudolf places great respect on Ace for delivering her first defeat, considering her a worthy rival who provided essential lessons in humility. The two share a comedic dynamic as they love making puns together, with Ace being receptive to Rudolf's wordplay. While Ace "admires Mr. C.B.", her relationship with Rudolf is different. Rudolf represents the "ultimate standard she must overcome".
- IRL - Symboli Rudolf and Katsuragi Ace were fierce rivals whose confrontations shaped the drama and importance of the 1984 Japanese racing season. Katsuragi Ace was the first horse to ever break Symboli Rudolf's winstreak, and they both ran against each other twice, in the Japan Cup of 1984 and the Arima Kinen of the same year, with Ace winning the Japan Cup and Rudolf winning the Arima Kinen.
- Mejiro Ramonu - Childhood friend and rival. Rudolf is dedicated to Ramonu and is willing to do anything for her. She says that Ramonu could summon her with just one phone call. Rudolf says that she would become perfect for Ramonu's happiness. Ramonu's persistence to run as a child despite her weak legs deeply impacted Rudolf and her desire to become the Emperor. When they were young, Ramonu's comment on how it's natural to give everything for what you want made her consider that she must leave everything behind to fulfill her goal as the Emperor. Rudolf wants Ramonu to stand alongside her in creating a better future for Umamusume, which contrasts with Ramonu's goal of standing alongside Rudolf only in races. Rudolf believes that as the first Triple Tiara, Ramonu could be truly valuable in her efforts to create a world where all Umamusume can be happy.
- IRL, Symboli Rudolf and Mejiro Ramonu were bred together and had a foal named Mejiro Rivera, whom was titled the "Ten-Crown Foal" due to the combined G1 wins her parents had. Though Mejiro Rivera only raced in her maiden race, lost and never raced furthermore.
- Sirius Symboli - Childhood friend and rival. Despite their messy relationship and tendency to get into arguments, Rudolf deeply values Sirius and wishes to mend their relationship. Sirius and Rudolf grew up as childhood friends, where Sirius was one of the only people that wanted to run with her. Sirius sincerely admired Rudolf, but as they grew up, Sirius grew distant from Rudolf due to the latter becoming the Emperor and abandoning her former self. Sirius believes that Rudolf lost her edge, and doesn't run the same rough way as Sirius liked. She also hates how Rudolf runs Tracen, and she believes that Rudolf couldn't possibly care for every student who slip through the cracks. They are both at odds in beliefs, as Sirius wants to help the outcasts in Tracen despite breaking the rules, while Rudolf wants to help in a stricter way. Sirius wants to prioritize the individual runners who need extra support rather than every student at Tracen like Rudolf does. Seeing as how Sirius values independence more than anything, she dislikes being seen as someone to be guided by Rudolf. Sirius wants to surpass Rudolf as a racer and outshine her, to the point where she forgets her own goal of becoming the brightest star. Rudolf loves racing with Sirius, and even asks to race with her one more time before Sirius leaves to go abroad for 2 years. Rudolf sends a letter to Sirius, saying that although she feels some frustration that Sirius surpassed her, she's still happy for her. She writes that Sirius was special for her strength in always believing in her own path, and that running with her sometimes saved her.[3]
- Maruzensky - Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Rigil. Friend and advisor on Cinderella Gray. Unlike with many of the other Umamusume, Rudolf acts differently around Maruzensky because she finds the latter fascinating, bringing out her instincts as a racer. They share a unique advisor-confidante relationship. The franchise emphasizes their complementary dynamic, with Rudolf as formal and idealistic, burdened by the responsibility of creating "a world where all Umamusume can live in true happiness." Maruzensky, despite her own legendary credentials, takes a more laid-back approach, speaking in an old-fashioned, casual manner and treating interactions with a relaxed, sisterly warmth. This can be seen more prominently in Cinderella Gray, where Maruzensky playfully challenges Rudolf, grounding her idealistic ambitions while supporting her decisions as Student Council President, though both have a mutual understanding of the burden of legendary status and unfulfilled potential. Maruzensky's firsthand experience with discriminatory racing regulations also fuels Rudolf's drive to reform URA rules, giving her efforts a personal edge.
- In real life, the two horses never faced each other, as they raced in different eras. However, both horses share thematic parallels that make their pairing in Umamusume quite meaningful. Rudolf's undefeated Triple Crown campaign in 1984 coincided with a pivotal moment in racing history, the lifting of Japan's foreign-bred horse restriction. The barrier that had defined and confined Maruzensky's career. Maruzensky retired undefeated in all races he was permitted to enter, but was forever denied the opportunity to compete for the sport's most prestigious titles. This creates a powerful symbolic connection between the two, as Rudolf became the beneficiary of a racing system that was beginning to open up, while Maruzensky had been the victim of that same system's restrictive past. This parallel would seep into the two's dynamic in the franchise.
