Grass Wonder is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Biography

"Noble and gallant, I march on... towards my ambitions."

Neat and sweet. Japanese at heart, she's back home from the U.S.

Though born in America, her parents' love of Japanese culture influenced her to also love all things to do with the country—to the point of being called the spitting image of the ideal Japanese beauty. She speaks in a friendly manner and is easy to get along with, but her will is firm. Her determination to win is second to none. She shares a room with her close friend, El Condor Pasa.

Likes Japanese sweets, Japanese culture, competitive karuta
Dislikes Insects, disrespect for history and tradition
Ears Do not tremble in the slightest when she's doing a tea ceremony
Tail Can get bugs off her back without looking over her shoulder
Family Gets her love of Japan from her parents. Her home has a Japanese-style room
Personal Rule All the pencils in her case must be perfectly sharpened
Phone Background Has the dates of her Race Goals in a large font
Before a Race... Repeats the names of everyone in the race in her mind
Good Subject Japanese (especially classical literature)
Secret Pride She's gotten good enough at the ryūteki to perform live.
Frequent Purchase Postcards (to send to her family back home)
Secrets She's secretly particular about her skirt length.
She can't figure out if matcha lattes are "Japanese" enough.

Appearance

Grass Wonder has long light brown hair with a small white mark in the middle. Her right ear has a gold buckle in the shape of a shield which has a dark blue ribbon decoration with a red stripe on the middle, along with two silver chains that hang from the buckle. She has light blue eyes with cyan highlights to them.

Her racing outfit consists of a light blue sailor-style jacket over a white, pleated, short-style dress along with a white and gold neckerchief tied with a large bow. Her jacket is decorated with golden trims along the shoulders, wrists, and along the bottom. Two red armbands with golden decoration matching her hair clip fit right above her elbows. A red and gold belt with a decorative golden pin runs across her chest under her jacket. The dress sections at the upper thighs, revealing an embroidered underskirt with golden buttons. A loose red and yellow striped belt runs along her underskirt. She wears two differently colored boots, her right leg having a white boot with a bright tan collar and trim, and a black one on her left leg. Her right leg has a barely visible black wrapping resembling a bandage poking out from her shoe.

Relationships

  • El Condor Pasa - Roommate, rival, and best friend. Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Rigil. Despite making frequent, and threatening, efforts to keep El in check when she steps out of line, usually by pulling her tail much to El's disdain and slight fear, Grass cares for her deeply. They both seem to be the ones that understand one another the most, and have a healthy rivalry on the track. She keeps El's secret of owning a hawk in their dorm room under wraps.
  • Special Week - Rival, classmate, and friend. The two get along with each other quite well, but Grass is portrayed to have a slight obsession with Spe in Season 1 of the anime.
  • King Halo - Friend, classmate, and rival.
  • Seiun Sky - Friend, classmate, and rival.
  • Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi - Friend, classmate, and rival.
    • Grass, El, Spe, King, Seiun, and Tsuyoshi are often referred to as the "Golden Generation".
    • IRL, Grass Wonder and El Condor Pasa were American-bred and Japanese-trained horses who shared the same jockeys, Hitoshi Matoba and Masayoshi Ebina.
  • Maruzensky - Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Rigil. In the anime, Grass sought Maruzensky for advice, while in the game's Career mode, many characters compare Grass to Maruzensky, which displeases Grass. In Symboli Rudolf's character story, Rudolf seeks Maruzensky to provide advice for Grass, as she is struggling to adapt to the tracks in Japan.
    • This is based off of the real-life belief that Grass was supposed to be "the second coming of Maruzensky" due to his strength.[1]
  • Gold Ship - Friend.
    • IRL, the two of them were friends in real life, as Gold Ship usually stomps his foot every time he saw Grass Wonder.
  • Air Groove, Symboli Rudolf, T.M. Opera O, Narita Brian, Hishi Amazon, Fuji Kiseki - Teammates on the anime-only team, Team Rigil.
  • Chrono Genesis - Friend. Chrono Genesis looks up to her, as Grass Wonder tends to give her advice and firsthand accounts from races in the past.
    • IRL, both of them won three Grand Prix races, with Grass Wonder being the second to do so, while Chrono Genesis became the third.

Trivia

  • Her initial character profile was uploaded on the official Twitter account on March 15, 2017.
  • "Umamusume: Pretty Derby Artworks Vol.1" explains why her character designer made specific choices when designing her in relation to her real-life counterpart, which were as follows:
    • The "G" emblem on both her ear decoration and shirt collar stands for "Grass Wonder", "Graceful", and "Grand Prix" (a type of race she won three times).
    • The color scheme of the real horse's jockey silks: white base with blue sleeves and a red sash, is carefully incorporated into a sailor uniform styled design.
    • Due to Grass Wonder's real life counterpart suffering a fracture in his right hind leg early in his career, and then recovering to find success, she has careful taping in her right leg.
  • Grass Wonder has "dabbled" in Iaido.[2]
  • In the game's home screen, Grass received a message from her sister saying she will defeat Grass. This is a reference to the in-real-life Grass Wonder's full younger sister, Wonder Again, who also won several G1 races in the United States and has a G2 race named after her as the Wonder Again Stakes.
  • Her New Year's alternate outfit is meant to be a contrast to Special Week's Commander alternate outfit, which is why it's blue.[3]
