JRA Hero Biography[1]

Victoire Pisa is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2009 to 2011. He notably became the first Japanese-bred and trained racehorse to win the Dubai World Cup in 2011.

Name Origin

"Victoire" is derived from the Montagne Sainte-Victoire mountain range in southern France.[2]

"Pisa" is the crown name for owner Yoshimi Ichikawa.

Racing career

2-year-old season (2009)

After coming in second in his debut race, Victoire Pisa finally broke his maiden on November 7th, 2009. At the end of the month, he won the ungraded Kyoto Nisai Stakes. His first graded victory came a month later, winning the Hopeful Stakes (then called the Radio Nikkei Hai Nisai Stakes and classified as a G3) on December 26th.

3-year-old season (2010)

Victoire Pisa continued his win streak into the new season with victories in the G2 Yayoi Sho and G1 Satsuki Sho. This streak was finally broken in the Japanese Derby, where he finished 3rd behind Eishin Flash and Rose Kingdom.

He traveled to Europe soon after to participate in two French races: the G2 Prix Niel, in which he placed 4th, and the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, where he was 7th while Nakayama Festa finished second, a nose after the winner Workforce.

His first race back in Japan was his first attempt at the Japan Cup. In a controversial finish, Victoire Pisa came 3rd behind Rose Kingdom and Buena Vista, who was subsequently demoted to 2nd place due to interference in the final straight.

He capped off the year with his first attempt at the Arima Kinen, where he once again clashed with Buena Vista. The race came down to the final straight, with Victoire Pisa winning by a nose.

4-year-old season (2011)

After his victory in the Nakayama Kinen, Victoire Pisa contested the G1 Dubai World Cup. While this was his first race off a turf track, Japanese horses had seen success on the newly built Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, with Red Desire winning the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 in 2010. At the time, the track used an all weather synthetic tapeta surface that was suitable for turf horses to adapt to. Victoire Pisa left Japan along with Buena Vista, Transcend and Rulership enroute to the UAE on March 10th.

The following section includes information about the 2011 Tohoku earthquake disaster.

The shirt worn by Japanese trainers and staff in Dubai, in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster.[3]

A day after leaving Japan, the country was struck by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake, east of the Oshika Peninsula of the Tōhoku region, with a tsunami resulting shortly after. The event became known as the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster. Miyagi, one of the prefectures heavily affected in the disaster, is home of the Yamamoto Training Center, where Victoire Pisa was stabled after running in the Arima Kinen. Several staff members that accompanied him to Dubai had left family members in Miyagi. Chiba Prefecture, home of Nakayama Racecourse and where Victoire Pisa won the 2010 Satsuki Sho, suffered significant damage on both the track and grandstand.[4] While in Dubai, Japanese connections and members of the press wore polo shirts that had the Japanese flag and the word "HOPE" on the right sleeve. Many caretaker and assistants of the Japanese horses in Dubai continued to work in preparation for the Dubai World Cup Festival on March 26th.

However, due to a series of leg injuries sustained during his second trip to France, he failed to achieve this level of success once more by the end of the year. His worst placement occurred in his next recorded race, placing 13th in the 2011 Japan Cup. His retirement was announced a few days after the 2011 Arima Kinen, in which he placed 8th.[5]

Retirement and Breeding Career

A retirement ceremony for Victoire Pisa was held on January 15th, 2012[6].

After retirement, Victoire Pisa became a breeding stallion. He was first stationed at the Shadai Stallion Station, and his first crop of foals included future Oka Sho winner Jeweler. He is also the damsire of Panja Tower, an active racehorse who won the 2025 NHK Mile Cup.

In 2017, he was transferred to the Breeders Stallion Station. He was sold to the Turkish Jockey Club in 2020.[7]
