Neo Universe was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2002 to 2004. In 2003, he nearly won the Triple Crown but came third to That's the Plenty in the Kikuka Sho.

Name Origin

Neo Universe is named after the song of the same name by L'arc en Ciel, a Japanese rock band.

Racing career

Two year old season (2002)

Neo Universe began his racing career on November 9th, 2002 in a short distance debut race at Kyoto Racecourse. He was the favorite to win at 2.5 odds, and lived up to his expectations by winning the race by a length and a half over Mayano Chianti. His second and final start as a two-year-old was the Sports Hochi Hai Chukyo Nisai Stakes, which was a step up in distance at 1800m. Due to the impressive performance of his last race, he was again the favorite but finished third behind Hoshi Commander and Makoto Emperor.

Three year old season (2003)

Beginning his three-year-old season, Neo Universe first challenged the Shiraume Sho in January, an allowance-class race over 1600 meters of turf. He won this race by a neck, and this begun his winning streak. His next race was his first foray into a graded stakes race in the G3 Kisaragi Sho. Sent off as the third favorite, he won comfortably by half a length over Silent Deal.

Being pointed towards the Classics, he then was raced in the Spring Stakes, a trial for the first leg of the Triple Crown: the Satsuki Sho. In this race, he also had a change of jockey. Mirco Demuro, a foreign jockey, took the reigns and later became Neo Universe's regular jockey. Demuro won the Spring Stakes on Neo Universe, and continued into the Satsuki Sho with him. During the Satsuki Sho, Neo Universe stayed in the middle of the pack almost the entire race, further back than most of his other starts. He broke through the pack in the stretch, and just barely beat out Sakura President by a head.

Following the path of the Triple Crown, Neo Universe made his next start just a month and a half later in the Japan Derby. On the day of the Derby, the track was incredibly heavy and wet due to rainfall from the remnants of a typhoon the previous day. Many other horses erred towards the outside in hopes for better going on the track, but Neo Universe and Mirco Demuro stayed near the middle of the track for the entire race. This proved to be an effective strategy, as the duo prevailed easily by half a length over Zenno Rob Roy. In an interview, Demuro said that, "He's unbelievable. If he did any more he'd be flying."[1] Neo Universe was entered in the Takarazuka Kinen and Kobe Shimbun Hai as preparation for the Kikka Sho, but neither of those starts resulted in a victory, being fourth place and third place respectively. In the Kikka Sho, he stayed near the back of the pack and challenged That's the Plenty in the stretch, but failed to catch up to him and was overtaken in second place meters before the goal by Lincoln.

For his last start of his three year old season, Neo Universe entered the Japan Cup, racing against older horses for the first time, but he just couldn't catch up to Tap Dance City and other leading horses, finishing fourth.

Four year old season (2004)

In his four year old season, Neo Universe only started twice, winning only the Sankei Osaka Hai in April. He challenged the Spring Tenno Sho in May, but failed to fire and placed tenth. It was planned for him to enter the Takarazuka Kinen as his next start, but flexor tendonitis was found in his right front leg during training.[2] They decided to retire him after this injury.

Retirement

Neo Universe retired from racing in September 2004 after an injury. A retirement ceremony was held for him in the same month at Sapporo Racecourse, and after that he entered stud at Shadai Stallion Station, and later at Lex Stud. He was a prolific and successful sire, producing many graded-stakes winning offspring. As a sire, he produced:[3]

  • Victoire Pisa (2010 Satsuki Sho, 2010 Arima Kinen, 2011 Dubai World Cup)
  • Neorealism (2017 Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth II Cup)
  • Unrivaled (2009 Satsuki Sho)
  • Logi Universe (2009 Japanese Derby)

His influence as a sire extends beyond direct offspring, as he has also found success in his daughters' progeny.[4] This includes:

  • Aerolithe (2017 NHK Mile Cup)
  • Le Vent Se Leve (2017 Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, 2018 Japan Dirt Derby, 2018 Mile Championship Nambu Hai, 2018 Champions' Cup)
  • Derma Sotogake (2022 Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, 2023 UAE Derby)

Neo Universe was euthanized on March 8th, 2021 after an incident during breeding where he sustained a severe injury to his shoulder. His jockey, Mirco Demuro, said on Instagram after his passing, "Meeting you was great!!! You changed my life. I will always keep you in my heart. RIP Champion❤️".[5]

Honors

  • JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Colt (2003)
