Portrait of the Buccephalus[1]

Buena Vista is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2008 to 2011. She famously won the Oka Sho and Japanese Oaks in 2009, but was denied the Triple Tiara by Red Desire, placing only 3rd in the Shuka Sho.

Name Origin

Her name literally means "Good View" in Spanish.

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2008)

Buena Vista made her debut on October 26th, 2008, in a 1,800-meter turf race on Kyoto Racecourse. She lost and place 3rd to the future Satsuki Sho winner Unrivaled. However, in her next race, she won by three lengths, breaking out of her maiden[2]. On December 14th, she entered her final race of the year, the G1 race Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, as the most popular. As she raced from the back, she eventually surged past the other horses, and won by two lengths, making this her first G1 victory[3]. It also marked a mother-daughter win since Biwa Heidi's participation at the year 1995. At the end of the year, she won the JRA Award for Best Two-Year-Old Filly.

In a post-race interview, the interviewer asked Hiroyoshi Matsuda, her trainer, on whether or not Buena Vista would aim for the Japanese Derby in her classic year[4]. Matsuda denied this notion, and reiterated that Buena Vista will be taking the Triple Tiara route, as it will be easier on the horse[5].

Three-year-old season (2009)

On March 7th, 2009, Buena Vista entered the Tulip Sho (G3). From the third corner, she began to accelerate, and won the race by a quarter of a length[6]. On April 12th, she entered the Oka Sho as the overwhelming favorite. She evaded Red Desire who was charging from the outside and won the race by half a length, making this her second G1 victory[7]. On May 24th, Buena Vista entered the Japanese Oaks as the most popular once again. Red Desire, who was ahead at the time, was aiming for the finish, when Buena Vista suddenly surged behind her, crossing the finish line with her at the same time[8]. After a close examination, it was determined that Buena Vista won the race, as she was slightly ahead of her.

With these victories, Buena Vista had the Double Tiara, and after this, she rested at Northern Farm until the fall. On August 23rd, she entered the Sapporo Kinen (G2). This race would determine if she would enter the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a French G1 race that no Japanese horse has been able to win. If she could not win this race, she would be unable to travel abroad and participate[9]. She attempted to accelerate from the third corner, but she was unable to catch Yamanin Kingly, and she placed 2nd. Because of this loss, the plan to have her race in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was quickly cancelled, and Buena Vista continued to aim for the Shuka Sho, the final leg of the Triple Tiara[10]. An issue in the hoof of her right front leg was also discovered, but since it was mild, the symptoms were quickly dealt with, and she recovered just in time for the next race[11].

On October 18th, she entered the Shuka Sho. Despite accelerating and racing in good position, Red Desire eventually caught up to her and won the race, with Buena Vista in 2nd place right next to her. Not only was this her first G1 defeat, it was later determined that she obstructed the path of Broad Street, which demoted her to 3rd place. After this loss, she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 15th, where she once again placed 3rd, and lost to Queen Spumante.

In her final race of the year, she ran in the Arima Kinen on December 27th, voted in as the most popular after Vodka dropped out of the race[12]. From the final corner, Buena Vista surged and overtook Matsurida Gogh, but Dream Journey, who was marking her from behind, quickly rushed past her and won the race. Buena Vista placed 2nd[13]. However, Buena Vista won the JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Filly at the end of the year.

Four-year-old season (2010)

Buena Vista rested in the beginning of the year at Yamamoto Training Center. After participating in the Dubai World Cup Meeting, Buena Vista was invited to race in the Dubai Sheema Classic in the spring. Before this, on February 20th, 2010, she entered the Kyoto Kinen (G2), where this was her first win since the Japanese Oaks nine months prior. This was also the first time a mare had won the race in fifteen years since Wako Chikako won it in 1995. After her victory, it was officially announced that she would enter the Dubai Sheema Classic, and on March 27th, she competed in the race. At the final straight, she could not catch up to Da Re Mi, and she lost and placed 2nd.

On April 29th, she returned to Ritto Training Center after quarantining at Miki Horseland Park, and aimed for the Victoria Mile. On May 16th, she entered the Victoria Mile, where she would face Red Desire once again. Buena Vista chased her from the outside, and eventually overtook her at the finish line, making the race her fourth G1 victory[14]. Her time of 1.32.4 would tie with Vodka.

On June 27th, she entered the Takarazuka Kinen, being the most popular out of the other horses. She found herself in a good position at the final straight, overtaking the escaping horse Earnestly, but Nakayama Festa quickly caught up to her and beat her by half a length, and she placed 2nd[15]. After resting during the summer, Buena Vista returned to racing on October 31st, and entered the Tenno Sho (Autumn). As the race was coming to an end, she surged through and widened the gap further and further, and won the race[16]. This made the race her fifth G1 victory.

After this, Buena Vista entered the Japan Cup on November 28th, where she evaded Victoire Pisa and Rose Kingdom, and finished first by three-fourths of a length[17]. Her jockey, Christophe Soumillon, assuming Buena Vista had won, did a winning run and a flying dismount in front of the stand[18]. However, after nearly half an hour of deliberation, it was officially determined that Rose Kingdom was the official winner of the race.

Rose Kingdom attempted to escape from the pack with 300 meters remaining. However, Buena Vista was not only suddenly drifting towards inside rather than outside, but Victoire Pisa was suddenly stagnant from the outside. While Victoire Pisa eventually moved, Buena Vista did not move in time, blocking Rose Kingdom's path and stalling him in the process. Due to this sequence of events, it was determined by the court that Buena Vista obstructed his path, demoting her placement to 2nd place[19].

After this, she entered the Arima Kinen on December 26th. Buena Vista and Victoire Pisa both crossed the finish line, but after determination, it was confirmed that Victoire Pisa won the race, placing Buena Vista in 2nd. At the end of the year, Buena Vista received the JRA Award for Best Older Filly or Mare, and the JRA Award for Horse of the Year.

Five-year-old season (2011)

Buena Vista received an invitation to the Dubai World Cup shortly after the Arima Kinen. On March 26th, she entered the race, but lost and place 8th, the lowest in her career. After returning from Dubai, she entered the Victoria Mile on May 15th, where she lost to the 2010 Triple Tiara winner Apapane, and placed 2nd. Later, she entered the Takarazuka Kinen on June 26th. Despite her surging through the other horses, she could not chase the escaping horse Earnestly, losing to 2nd place once again[20].

After resting in the summer, she entered the Tenno Sho (Autumn) on October 30th. Attempting to find a good position, she found herself blocked, and could not reach the winning horse Tosen Jordan[21]. On November 27th, she entered the Japan Cup for the second time. Buena Vista found herself as the 2nd favorite, with the most popular being the German-mare Danedream. Buena Vista reached the finish line, and place first[22]. The Japan Cup became her sixth and final G1 victory of her career. It was then announced that Buena Vista's retirement race will be the Arima Kinen[23].

Buena Vista entered the Arima Kinen on December 25th. Buena Vista was running as the 2nd favorite, while the most popular was the Triple Crown winner of the year, Orfevre. Buena Vista found herself in a good position, but couldn't utilize her final spurt, and finished in 7th place, losing to Orfevre. A retirement ceremony was held for her shortly after[24], and Buena Vista was deregistered from the Japan Racing Association on January 5th, 2012.

Retirement and Breeding Career

After retiring, she became a broodmare at Northern Farm. She was going to have a foal with King Kamehameha in 2013, but she miscarried the child during the spring. She had her first foal in 2014, and continues to work as a broodmare.

Trivia

  • In a similar vein to her sire Special Week, Buena Vista didn't interact much with other horses and has a strong attachment to humans, especially with a stablehand named Yamaguchi, as she started neighing if he was absent for a long period of time.
  • Buena Vista's debut race was considered to be strong, as two other horses there besides Buena Vista went on to win G1 races as well. Unrivaled won the Satsuki Sho in 2009, while Three Rolls won the Kikuka Sho in 2009.
