"She was strong-willed, but kind... I trusted Desire, but she cared about me too.. She taught me everything. We won a G1, we went overseas. She showed me what a G1-winning horse is like. She was my "teacher". My mentor is Mr. Mikio (Matsunaga), but my equine teacher was her. Even when I ride other horses, I end up comparing them to Desire."
—Takashi Saito, trainer assistant of Red Desire[1]

Red Desire was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2009 to 2011. A late debutant, she denied Buena Vista's Triple Tiara by a nose and would become the first Japanese horse to win an all-weather surface race.

Name Origin

Owned by Tokyo Horse Racing Co.,Ltd, whose crown name is "Red".

Racing career

Before debut

Tokyo Thoroughbred Club offered Red Desire in two hundred bite owner shares, with each share valued at 60,000 yen. The club commented that Red Desire could excel at middle to long distance turf races due to her sire, Manhattan Cafe.[2] In 2008, she began training for her debut but faced several setbacks, suffering an injury from a fall and being diagnosed with colic in September. Her debut got delayed until next year as a 3-year-old.[2]

Three-year-old season (2009)

On January 4th at Kyoto Racecourse, Red Desire made her debut, winning by a nose. The next month, she entered the Elfin Stakes and won by a nose once again. It was decided that she would enter the 2009 Oka Sho without a trial race.

On April 12th, Red Desire ran in the Oka Sho. Off the back of two straight wins, she was the 2nd favorite, behind the overwhelmingly favored Buena Vista. Breaking from the widest gate, she ended herself in the back of the field before making a wide run on the final stretch. She found the lead late, but was chased down by Buena Vista in the last moment, losing by a 1/2 length and placed 2nd.[3]

Red Desire's next race was the Japanese Oaks on May 24th where she was once again the 2nd favorite behind 1.2 odds on the favorite Buena Vista. Having a ground saving ride for most of the race, she made her bid to the front with 200 meters to go, and tried to fend off a rapidly approaching Buena Vista. Both horses crossed the finish line at the same time and the result was decided by a photo finish, with Red Desire losing by a nose, placing 2nd.[4] She had a break over the summer before preparing for the third leg of the Fillies Triple Crown in the fall.

Red Desire returned on September 20th for the G2 Rose Stakes. She was the favorite in the race, but ended up finishing 2nd by a neck to Broad Street.[5] A month later on October 18th, she ran in the Shuka Sho. Once again, she was the 2nd favorite behind Buena Vista, with Red Desire's camp looking to upset Buena Vista's Fillies Triple Crown bid. In a ground saving run for most of the race, Red Desire found the front after the final corner. She was being chased by Buena Vista, but held her off, winning the Shuka Sho by a nose. It was a first G1 victory for both herself, and her owners Tokyo Thoroughbred Club.[6]

Red Desire was entered in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, but due to an injury, she withdrew from the race and entered in the Japan Cup. On November 29th, Red Desire faced an international field of older horses, drew the 6 gate next to 6-time G1-winning mare Vodka. In the race, Red Desire was saving ground until the final straight, facing a wall of horses in front of her. Jockey Hirofumi Shii weaved the field and made a good run, but she was no match for the winner Vodka and runner-up Oken Bruce Lee, finishing 3rd place.[7]

At the end of the year, Buena Vista won the Best 3-Year-Old Filly JRA Award. Despite Red Desire beating her in the Shuka Sho, her camp aimed to defeat Buena Vista again next year.

Four-year-old season (2010)

Red Desire went to Dubai's Meydan Racecourse, alongside Vodka, to run in the Al Maktoum Challenge R3 on March 4th. This was her first race on an all-weather track, which uses synthetic material for its surface. In the race, she made a late charge on the outside, and earned an unlikely victory, winning by just a neck over Gloria de Campeao.[8] This was the first graded victory for any Japanese horse for the Al Maktoum Challenge R3, and on an all-weather surface. Due to her victory, her team decided to withdraw Red Desire from her originally scheduled race, Dubai Sheema Classic, and to run in the Dubai World Cup. Vodka was withdrawn from the expedition due to a nosebleed after the Al Maktoum Challenge R3. With Vodka leaving early, the staff posted a picture of Vodka in front of Red Desire's stable to ease off her loneliness during that time.

On March 27th, Red Desire participated in the Dubai World Cup. She was the only Japanese horse, and mare that entered in the 2000 meter dirt race. During the race, Red Desire failed to show her late spurt on the stretch and faded in 11th place. When asked about her poor performance, jockey Christophe Soumillon suggested that she was spooked by fireworks prior to the race.[9] While the expedition in Dubai ended in disappointment, it encouraged trainers that Japanese horses can compete on the Meydan all-weather track.

Coming home from Dubai, the team decided her next race was the G1 the Victoria Mile on May 16th, setting up a match with her rival Buena Vista. In the race, Red Desire made her run on the outside but failed to show a great turn of foot before being overtaken by Buena Vista on her outside, finishing 4th.[10] Red Desire was supposed to enter in the Takarazuka Kinen to rematch Buena Vista, but ended up withdrawing from the race due to a nosebleed.[11]

Over the summer, there were discussions with connections about the next target race for Red Desire. It was decided that she would run in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf, using the G1 Flower Bowl Stakes as a warmup race. The decision was made due to the use of pre-race medication such as Lasix, used to prevent bleeding in horses, being allowed in the United States.[12]

On October 3rd, Red Desire participated at Belmont Park for the G1 Flower Bowl Stakes as a 9-5 favorite. This was her first race with her American jockey for the expedition, Kent Desormeaux. In the race, the field bunched in the final straight, with Red Desire chasing from the inside. She failed to find the lead and finished 3rd behind the winner Ave.[13] Despite the loss, she was still eligible to enter into the Breeders Cup.

On November 6th, Red Desire ran in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs. She went into the race as an 11-2, 3rd favorite, behind Harmonious and Midday. In the race, she saved ground until the final turn of the race, where she demonstrated her late spurt once again. However, she failed again to show enough on the homestretch and finished a close 4th.[14]

After returning from Japan, Red Desire was in 12th place for the Arima Kinen voting results, and made her eligible into the race.[15] On December 26th, she participated in the 55th edition of the Arima Kinen. Buena Vista, who received the most votes for the Arima Kinen, was also running, marking the 5th race between the two horses. In the race, Red Desire failed to run at her best and placed a distant 14th.[16] Despite the goal of beating Buena Vista, Red Desire failed to beat her in their 2 meetings this year, with Buena Vista winning the JRA Horse of the Year honor.

Five-year-old season (2011)

Red Desire took a break for the first half of 2011 before running in the Sapporo Kinen on August 21st, and finished a close 3rd behind the winner Tosen Jordan. She was entered for the Tenno Sho (Autumn), but was unqualified from the race. Her team decided her next target race to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, but once again developed nosebleeds and withdrew from the race. It was decided that she retired to be a broodmare at Shadai Farm.[17]

Retirement

In 2013, she gave birth to her first foal, a filly by Harbinger. In 2016, after giving birth to her 4th foal, she developed peritonitis, and passed away on May 20th, 2016 at the age of 10.[18]
