Maruzensky was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1976 to 1977.

Name Origin

The origin of Maruzensky's name originates from his sire, Nijinsky II (also simply known as Nijinsky), and the name of his owner's farm, Maruzen Hashimoto Farm. [1][Note 1] Had Maruzensky been born as a filly, the horse's name would be "Miss Maruzen".

Retirement and Death

After retirement, Maruzensky entered stud service and sired numerous G1-winning horses. Notably, Sakura Chiyono O won the Japanese Derby that his father couldn't enter.

Descendants of Maruzensky continued to foal talented winners over multiple generations. As a broodmare sire, grandchildren of Maruzensky include Special Week, Rice Shower, Winning Ticket, and Mejiro Bright. Winning Ticket and Special Week also won the Japanese Derby.

On August 21st, 1997, Maruzensky suddenly collapsed during light exercise due to cardiac arrest from a heart attack. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he passed away at the age of 23. His owner Zenkichi Hashimoto mourned him as his second son.

Three days after his death, his body was buried at Hashimoto Farm - his birthplace. The funeral was attended by members of the horseracing community. His burial was also attended by his mother Shill, who outlived him.

Notes

  1. Nijinsky II is Nijinsky, but he was registered with the former name when he stood stud at the United States. As there was already another Thoroughbred horse with the name Nijinsky registered with the American Jockey Club, a colt born in 1958, sired by Tom Fool out of the mare Natasha. As Maruzensky was born after Nijinsky stood stud, his stud name is written here.
