Manhattan Cafe was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2001 to 2002. Nicknamed the "Skyscraper Towering over the Turf"[2], Manhattan Cafe won all 3 Japanese Grade 1 races he ran in, and was a successful G1 winner producing sire and broodmare sire. Regular jockey Masayoshi Ebina remarked his "quiet demeanor, atypical of Sunday Silence progeny".[3] He was one of the five horses from the "Strongest Generation" of Japanese Horseracing alongside Agnes Tachyon, Jungle Pocket, Kurofune, and Dantsu Flame. He shares the 2001 Triple Crown with Agnes Tachyon and Jungle Pocket with a win at the Kikuka Sho.
Name Origin
Owner Kiyoshi Nishikawa decided on his name after trainer Futoshi Kojima pointed out that horses with the suffix "Cafe" were often more successful for him. "Manhattan Cafe" would be the 5th time the "Cafe" clan suffix would be used by Nishikawa. [4]
Racing career
3 years old season (2001)
Manhattan Cafe made a late debut on January 29th in a 2,000 meters maiden race at Tokyo Racecourse, but due to a poor start, he failed to win, finishing 3rd. He ran in another Tokyo maiden race on February 11th, this time winning for his 1st victory. Manhattan Cafe made his next start in the G2 Yayoi Sho, where he met 3-year-old rivals Agnes Tachyon and Kurofune. He was in poor health going into the race, having lost 20 kg of weight from his last race, and finished in 4th place, behind the winner Agnes Tachyon. Due to missing out on the top 3, he did not get automatic qualification into the Satsuki Sho. His next race was a month later in the Azalea Sho at Hanshin Racecourse, in an attempt to enter the Japanese Derby. However, Manhattan Cafe once again lost significant weight and was in poor health, and suffered a major defeat, finishing in 11th place. [5]
Trainer Futoshi Kojima didn't have clear answers for Manhattan Cafe's poor health, citing possibilities as "not handling transport well" or "undeveloped internal organs and muscles".[6] The trainer switched their goals to run Manhattan Cafe in the Kikuka Sho in October, the last leg of the Classic races. Over the summer, he won twice over 2,600 meters at Sapporo Racecourse, and was entered in the G2 Saint Lite Kinen, a trial race for the Kikuka Sho at the middle of September. Once again, Manhattan Cafe lost significant weight before the race and finished 4th, missing out on a automatic entry for the Kikuka Sho. [5]
Despite not qualifying for the Kikuka Sho, Manhattan Cafe was able to enter the race due to only 15 horses being registered, below the limit of horses for the race. On October 21st, he competed in his first G1 race, the Kikuka Sho at Kyoto Racecourse. He faced several rivals, including the 1st favorite and Japanese Derby winner Jungle Pocket, and Satsuki Sho and Derby runner-up Dantsu Flame. During the race, Manhattan Cafe had a ground-saving ride while other horses wore themselves out in the slowly paced race. He chased down his rivals in the final straight and won the race by 1/2 length. It was the first G1 victory for owner Nishikawa, and seeing the improvements Manhattan Cafe was making, trainer Kojima wanted to enter him into the Arima Kinen at the end of the year.
On December 23rd, Manhattan Cafe ran in the Arima Kinen at Nakayama Racecourse. This was his first race against older horses, facing the favorites T.M. Opera O and Meisho Doto, who retired together at the end of the race. Manhattan Cafe was in post position 4 and was running near the rear of the pack for most of the race. The pace-setter To The Victory ran a slow pace, putting him at a disadvantage. Despite this, Manhattan Cafe moved to the outside and showed his speed on the final straight, overtaking several horses and winning the race by over a length. Spectators believed the top 2 horses, Manhattan Cafe and American Boss, as a divine tribute to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center that happened earlier that year. [7]
Manhattan Cafe ended the year receiving votes for Best 3-Year-Old Colt and Horse of the Year in the JRA Awards, but lost both awards to Jungle Pocket.
4 years old season (2002)
Trainer Kojima made Manhattan Cafe's main race target the Tenno Sho (Spring) for the spring racing season. His first race of the year was the G2 Nikkei Sho on March 23rd, but he had a poor race, finishing in 6th place. Prior to the race, there were concerns over his loss of appetite and the sensitivity of his hooves. After the race, jockey Masayoshi Ebina dismounted Manhattan Cafe, claiming he felt something strange with the horse, but he was found to have no injuries. [8]
Manhattan Cafe stayed at the Ritto Training Center, prior to the Tenno Sho, to avoid any problems during transportation and train for three weeks at the training center. On April 28th, Manhattan Cafe ran in the G1 Tenno Sho (Spring), facing rivals from the previous year, including Jungle Pocket and Narita Top Road. During the race, Masayoshi Ebina gave him a ground-saving trip and once again showed his speed on the straight, overtaking both Narita Top Road and Jungle Pocket, winning the race by a neck over the latter. It was Manhattan Cafe's 3rd consecutive G1 win. [5]
While Manhattan Cafe was given a break to recover, his condition only continued to get worse after his Tenno Sho victory. He was forced to abort his target of running in the Takarazuka Kinen, and was given a break over the summer with plans to target autumn G1 races, including the Japan Cup. Over the summer, his condition improved dramatically, and Teruya Yoshida, owner of Shadai Stallion Station, asked for Manhattan Cafe to run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Owner Nishikawa was opposed to the plan, but was overruled by Trainer Kojima and Teruya Yoshida. [9]
On September 4th, Manhattan Cafe departed for France, accompanied by his stablemate Eagle Cafe. On October 6th, he ran in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamps Racecourse, against a strong European host that included High Chaparral, winner of the Irish Derby. Manhattan Cafe was the 5th favorite in the race. During the run, Manhattan Cafe had a good start and found a good position near the front of the pack. However, he started to slow down before the final straight and lost ground fast. He finished the race in 13th place, far behind the winner Marienbard. [5]
Retirement
After his 13th place finish in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a post-race veterinarian determined he had signs of tendonitis in his front left leg. Manhattan Cafe was retired immediately after, before any thorough examinations were carried out. [10]
A retirement ceremony was held on December 22nd, 2002, at Nakayama Racecourse. He wore his Arima Kinen number 4 bid to honor his victory at Nakayama the year before. While Masayoshi Ebina was planning to ride on Manhattan Cafe, Cafe could not move due to his injury and was pulled by his handler for the ceremony. Manhattan Cafe also ended up winning the 2002 Best Older Colt JRA Award after his retirement.[11]
Breeding career
After retirement, Manhattan Cafe moved to Shadai Stallion Station to start his stallion career. He would have success as a stallion producing several G1 winners, including Joe Cappuccino (2009 NHK Mile Cup), Red Desire (2009 Shuka Sho), Grape Brandy (2011 Japan Dirt Derby, 2013 February Stakes), Queens Ring (2016 Queen Elizabeth II Cup), and Hiruno D'Amour (2011 Tenno Sho (Spring)). [12] Manhattan Cafe has also had great success as a broodmare sire, representing as a broodmare sire for Tastiera (2023 Japanese Derby) and Soul Rush (2024 Mile Championship). [13]
In 2015, despite mating with 126 mares, Manhattan Cafe's health was severely deteriorating, and he had a poor immune system. By the end of the breeding season, he did not recover from his poor health. Manhattan Cafe passed away on August 13th, 2015, with a post-mortem examination determining a peritoneal tumor as the cause of death. [14]

Trivia
- Manhattan Cafe was noted to share a strong resemblance to his sire Sunday Silence, with some differences.
- Unlike Sunday Silence, who was highly aggressive and ferocious, small and lean, had crooked hind legs, has a sock on his right hind leg had a wider white blaze on his face and was more resilient, Manhattan Cafe was more quiet, obedient and gentle, much larger, did not have his sires crooked legs or sock, and the white blaze on his face was less prominent and more narrow.
- Due to the similarities, Manhattan Cafe was cast to play his sire in the Japanese TV docudrama "Fortunate Encounter, The Dream for Thoroughbreds".
- Surprisingly, Sunday Silence produced another son that looked even more like him than Manhattan Cafe, that being Black Tide, the sire of Kitasan Black.
