Mejiro Ryan is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. She is also featured in the Cinderella Gray manga.
Biography
"No problems pecs can't solve! Let's get swole together!"
Nothing beats a good workout! Even the sweat of her brow is earnest and pure.
A sporty girl who loves a good workout. Although born into the prestigious Mejiro family, her animated personality somewhat betrays that fact. She has something of an inferiority complex surrounding her childhood friend, Mejiro McQueen, and wishes to be as fast and pretty as her. Though physically strong, her heart is rather delicate.

Appearance
Mejiro Ryan's design depicts the vibe of someone who is sporty and practical. Spiky short brown hair that flows down with a white tuft that stands out at the center. She has uneven bangs that frame her face and her right ear is adorned with a metallic piece matching her color scheme and two piercings to boot.
As with most Umamusume, her racing outfit is unique to say the least, but also much more simpler than most as well. She wears a cropped jacket, mixed with white and teal stripes, rolled up sleeves, and on one wrist she wears a golden bracelet and on the other a black bracelet with metal studs. Beneath her jacket is a stripey tied up shirt with the name "Ryan" on it. She wears high waisted black shorts that seem to be tied down by a unique looking belt. Both sides of her upper thighs seem to be wrapped by a brown belt with gold trims, and she wears practical and plain looking white racing boots.
Relationships
- Mejiro McQueen - Childhood friend and rival. Ryan looks up to McQueen as the symbol of the Mejiro family. She represents the grace and strength that she's always strived for.
- Unfortunately for Ryan, despite being labeled as a natural talent oozing physical gifts, McQueen always seemed to best him in real life. It got to a point where trainers pulled McQueen out of a race just to give Ryan a better chance of winning a G1. In the 1991 Takarazuka Kinen, Ryan would finally defeat McQueen to the roar of the crowd.
- Mejiro Dober - Family
- Arguably one of the greatest mares of her generation and all time, Dober was a prestigious winner who once held the record for most G1 wins by a mare at 5. She also owns many Filly/Mare exclusive trophies.
- Mejiro Bright - Family
- A seasoned horse whose career spanned over 4 years. Mejiro Bright is a Tenno Sho winner and has earned the most amount out of Ryan's children.
- Mejiro Palmer, Mejiro Ramonu - Family.
- Mejiro Ardan - Family. Ryan cares a lot for Ardan, and worries about Ardan's fragile legs.
- Daiwa Scarlet - Friend. Scarlet shares her romances manga to Ryan, who is an avid reader of romance manga.
- Ines Fujin - Roommate and rival.
- Ines Fujin was one of Ryan's most prominent rivals in real life, defeating Ryan on multiple occasions.
- Oguri Cap - Rival, someone that Ryan looks up to tremendously.
- Ryan and Oguri raced each other at the 1990 Arima Kinen. At that point, Ryan was still chasing a G1 and Oguri was on his last dance looking for one more victory after a disappointing 1990 campaign. Oguri Cap won this race that was dubbed the "Miracle Final Run" while Ryan finished in second place, threatening Oguri's lead on the homestretch.

- Her initial character profile was uploaded to the official Twitter account on April 13, 2017.
- This tweet was a character name prediction quiz, that encouraged fans to try and guess which horse she's named after. The hint was "A tomboy with her trademark very short haircut. Due to her cheery and refreshing personality, she's very popular at school. She is said to be favored by the Umamusume gods......?"
- To further add onto this, Ryan was a very popular horse in real life. His popularity actually surpassed even McQueen's despite McQueen being more accomplished. This is most evident during the 1991 Takarazuka Kinen, the race where Ryan was at his peak.

- It is said that Ryan and Mejiro Palmer entertained many spectators during their retirement years. Mejiro Palmer was also said to be Ryan's best friend, they were born 2 weeks apart and grew up in the same ranch.[1]
- "Umamusume: Pretty Derby Artworks Vol.1" explains why her character designer made specific choices when designing her in relation to her real-life counterpart, which were as follows:
- Her jacket is white with teal stripes, in reference to the real horse's jockey silks. However, as with all of the Mejiro horses, the original green has been changed to teal.
- Since she is named after the Major League Baseball player Nolan Ryan, she wears a shirt that resembles a baseball player's uniform.
- Her real-life counterpart had white markings on both his front and back hooves, which is why she wears both white boots and white gloves.
- Ryan's belt in her racing outfit is also present in Mejiro Dober and Mejiro Bright's outfits, reinforcing their IRL counterparts as Ryan's children.
- Her real-life counterpart was known to have a very short mane as to prevent rashes, which is why she has short hair. The short mane has been described as a unique charm point which was very popular with the fans. It even has its own nickname, ライアンカット (Ryan Cut).[2]
- Ryan's athletic personality comes from her real-life counterpart being more muscular than most other horses.
