Biwa Hayahide is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
Biography
"This... is how you derive victory!"
A fiery intellectual. Logic is her weapon!
A theorist through and through, she breaks down any problem systemically. Theory-driven as she is, she values practical application, so her methods never end up as just talk. She has honed her ability to compete with the overwhelming talent of her sister, Narita Brian. She is good friends with schoolmates Narita Taishin and Winning Ticket.

Appearance
Biwa Hayahide has long and incredibly voluminous white hair, which is adorned by a pair of golden embellishments near her fluffy white ears. On her left ear is a simple gold clip, and on her right is an intricately detailed gold ring. She has yellow eyes, and wears a pair of red under-rim glasses.
Her race outfit consists of a fitted dark magenta jacket, adorned with gold buttons, and a pink collar and light pink accent. Her long sleeves have a pink triangular spike pattern on the cuffs. Underneath the jacket is a black button-up blouse with a red ribbon. She wears a dark magenta pleated skirt with a spiked pink design at the top. The skirt has waist cutouts on either side, and there's a red ribbon tied around her waist. Paired with thigh-high stockings with the same pink spikes—one leg featuring a cut-out circle at the top. She wears cool gray heeled loafers with buckles at the top.
Relationships
- Narita Taishin - Friend and rival. Taishin is somewhat cool with Hayahide compared to Ticket.
- Winning Ticket - Friend and rival. Hayahide usually helps Ticket whenever it comes to studying or training.
- IRL, Biwa Hayahide, Narita Taishin, and Winning Ticket make up the famous trio of rivals, "BNW", who won each leg of the 1993 Triple Crown.
- Narita Brian - Younger sister. Hayahide constanly worries about Brian's health and well being, like how she isn't eating enough vegetables, or her physique, all to Brian's annoyance. Despite it all, the two of them care about each other.
- In real life, the two of them are actual half brothers from the same mother, and were planned to race against each other in the 1994 Arima Kinen before Hayahide retired due to tendinitis during the Tenno Sho Autumn, leaving the showdown forever unrealized.
- T.M. Opera O - Roommate. Hayahide usually gets annoyed by Opera O's antics like spreading rose petals all over their dorm room's floor.
- Royce and Royce - Friend and rival. Royce views Hayahide as a strong and popular racer, and wants to surpass. She even goes so far as to temporarily remove her glasses while training, as she doesn't want her and Hayahide to "overlap" in traits. She also finds Hayahide's friendship with Winning Ticket and Narita Taishin interesting as their personalities mesh according to her. Both Hayahide and Royce get along quite well, as they are both data analysts and bond over how glasses can be a struggle while racing.
- In real life, Royce and Royce and Biwa Hayahide have competed with each other numerous times, such as the 1993 Kikuka Sho and 1994 Sankei Sho All Comers (G3). Biwa Hayahide won both of these races.

- Her initial character profile was uploaded to the official Twitter account on May 25, 2017.
- This tweet was a character name prediction quiz, that encouraged fans to try and guess which horse she's named after. The hint was "She is a cool, intelligent, and talented Umamusume. When someone points out that she has a big head, she snaps, 'It's just because of my hair color!.'"
- Race uniform design notes from Umamusume Pretty Derby Artworks Vol.02:
- Biwa Hayahide's glasses are a reference to times where the horse would wear a red menko (hood/blinkers).
- Black and pink sawtooth patterns on the stockings and skirt are based on Biwa's racing silks.
- The red leather race band references IRL Biwa's adornment of the same item, as seen in the 1994 Takarazuka Kinen.
- One notable aspect about the real Biwa Hayahide that was not adapted into the Umamusume is that prior to becoming completely white, Biwa Hayahide had two socks, one on his right foreleg and one on his left hind leg. Unlike the other Umamusume, who has some indicative way to display the socks, such as a shorter pant leg, shorter stocking/boot, or different colored boots or gloves, BIwa Hayahide has no such aspect in her racing design, since she doesn't wear gloves, her stockings are level and her shoes are the same color.
- Given the fact that the real Biwa Hayahide was a gray horse, a horse that will slowly lose pigmentation in it's coat over time, the Umamusume's design is based on the horse's final coat color, where the socks are no longer visible, rather than the color his coat was when he was still racing.
- She loves bananas, as it is shown in the 10th episode of Season 3, where she competes against the other members of BNW in a banana eating contest. She also appears eating bananas in the cafeteria in other episodes of the season.
- One of Biwa Hayahide's most notable personality traits is her self-consciousness of the size of her head, where she insists that it is not big.
- In fact, she is so insecure about it that whenever “big” and/or “head” (or synonyms of both words) were put together in a sentence, she will respond with denial even when it wasn't referring to her or her head. She can even sense when someone is talking about her from afar or in a loud crowded area like a racetrack and just so happens to use the word "head" when speaking about her, and insists that someone was talking about it, even when no one else finds it believable, like in the 12th episode of Season 2.
- Her insecurity about her head is a reference to her in-real-life counterpart who has a slightly bigger head than most horses, leading to the commentators playfully joking that the head alone can win a photo finish.
- Another personality trait is her self-consciousness about her voluminous hair. Hayahide compares it to a "Raging Dragon", impossible to tame, ranting about how much trouble it has gotten her and laments that she does not have smooth and silky hair like Brian.
- Like her head, Hayahide is also insecure about comments regarding her hair too, like how Ticket said that Hayahide's hair looks like Santa's beard.
- In her Christmas costume's unique skill animation and in the event Hungry for a Miracle, by putting a swirly glasses prop behind her hair and walking backwards, she can pass off as Santa Claus.
- Like her head, Hayahide is also insecure about comments regarding her hair too, like how Ticket said that Hayahide's hair looks like Santa's beard.
