My Own Shine (あたしだけの輝き, Atashi Dake no Kagayaki) is the 4th episode of the 3rd season of the Umamusume: Pretty Derby anime.
Summary
Kitasan Black is stuck in a losing streak. While talking to Nice Nature, she gets the idea to attempt a more intensive training regimen, since she's not prone to injury. Trainer isn't convinced that's such a good idea...
Plot
Nice Nature sees Kitasan Black at the tree stump again while on a walk. She approaches Kitasan to greet her, but is soon shocked to find Kitasan has been has been crying again.
Kitasan vents to Nature about her sudden inability to win following her previous two races, both in which she lost by less than a length. Kitasan compares herself to Satono Diamond and Duramente, expressing her anxiety to the whole situation.
Nature attempts to cheer Kitasan up by offering to take her out to get sweets. This is soon interrupted by Daitaku Helios and Mejiro Palmer, who are both being chased by Air Groove as they attempt to steal a DJ set. Helios and Palmer both end up crashing into Kitasan as Air Groove catches up to them, dragging them away.
Nature asks if Kitasan is okay, in which Kitasan explains she’s always been very durable, barely getting sick or injured. Nature suggests that maybe Kitasan could put this to use, by taking on more vigorous training that the average umamusume wouldn’t be able to handle.
In the Team Spica office, Kitasan brings this up to her trainer, who promptly declines and tells her it’s too risky. Kitasan continues to beg, but her trainer still denies her request. Tokai Teio interrupts, pointing out how there is no point to racing if you get an injury, but agrees with Kitasan’s strive to improve. Silence Suzuka also joins the conversation, agreeing with Teio. Suzuka expresses her gratitude for their trainer’s concern, but preaches the importance of letting Kitasan live up to her true racing potential. Her trainer hesitates, but agrees to think it over, much to Kitasan’s gratitude.
Satono Diamond and Satono Crown practice their racing together. Dia pushes forward in the final stretch and overtakes Crown, passing the finish line. Crown compliments Dia, who gives credit to the upcoming Satsuki Sho for her sudden motivation. Crown wishes her luck in making their family’s wish come true.
Kitasan prepares for training camp, packing her bag. She explains to Dia how she will be gone until the Spring Tenno Sho, which is around a month in the future. She realises this means she won’t be able to root for Dia in person at the upcoming Satsuki Sho and panics, but Dia reassures her that she’ll win and that Kitasan should focus on herself. Kitasan tells Dia she’ll miss her, so Dia hands Kitasan her broach as a way to always have part of her with her.
In her sleep, a shadowy figure enters Kitasan’s dorm. This is later found to be Mihono Bourbon, as Kitasan wakes up to find her bed has been moved to a random track with her still in it. Her trainer appears to explain to her that Bourbon will be her special coach, as hardcore training isn’t usually his strong suit. Rice Shower is also present, taking on the role of cooking the meals.
Kitasan reads her training plan, which includes a large variety of strenuous workouts. Bourbon explains that the goal of the camp is to finish all the tasks listed in under three hours before it’s over. Bourbon has her start immediately.
Kitasan partakes in the many challenges listed on the training plan, with Bourbon critiquing her as she went. By the time Kitasan had finished, she had a time of six hours.
Kitasan, her trainer, Bourbon, and Rice all get dinner. When she’s done, Kitasan heads to the hot spring. Kitasan realises shes a lot more exhausted and her body hurts a lot more than what she’s normally used to after training. In her tent, she holds Dia’s broach and vows to continue working hard.
Kitasan continues to work hard, slowly improving her record time each day. Meanwhile, Dia practices for her upcoming race with her trainer, vowing to win.
Kitasan begins losing focus and motication in her new training plan. She continues to train, but finds herself struggling more than usual and not improving on her time anymore. Kitasan’s trainer notices this, and brings his concern up to Bourbon and Rice. Bourbon reassures him that it’s all part of the plan.
Kitasan considers giving up, before snapping herself out of it. She takes the broach Dia gave her, and is reminded of the race Dia will be in tomorrow.
Rice goes to wake Kitasan up for breakfast, but instead finds Kitasan missing and a note left behind. Kitasan runs all the way back to the racecourse, and is just in time to watch Dia run in the final corner of the Satsuki Sho.
Dia shows great power, but it ends up not being enough to win her the race. Kitasan worries over whether Dia will be okay or not, remembering how she said she would win. Dia tells the interviewers to watch the Japanese Derby. ich she will be running in. Kitasan sees this, clutches the broach, and returns to camp on foot.
Kitasan resumes her training, this time with her motivation replenished. She finishes the full training plan, this time finally completing it in under three hours, less than a second left to spare. Her and her trainer then agree to take on the Spring Tenno Sho next.
