Katsuragi Ace is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Biography

"I'll break through all the walls and conventions! That's the ace I aim for!"

Aiming to be the ace of the Umamusume world! A girl with high ambitions runs headstrong.

A bright and cheerful Umamusume hailing from the deep countryside. She hates boring stereotypes and the feeling of entrapment and aims to become an ace among Umamusume to destroy them. Although she admires Mr. C.B., she strongly knows that the Triple Crown Umamusume is a target she has to overcome.

Appearance

Katsuragi Ace wears her jet-black hair into a short ponytail, with the center of her bangs growing past her eyes. The side of her hair fringes outwards, giving her a bit of a wild but put-together look. She has two distinct white streaks of hair on her bangs, the bottom streak larger than the top. On her ears, she wears white ear covers, however the ear cover on her right ear has two blue stripes and one red stripe. She wears a round red ball-shaped ornament on her right ear, accompanied by a red tassel and golden clasps. Her determined eyes are a soft, yet saturated, blue.

Ace's racing outfit is rather cool and sleek. She wears a light blue top with a small diamond cutout on her chest, layered underneath is a dark brown top split down the center, with the center being clasped together with ornate golden accessories. Underneath is a simple dark gray pair of shorts. However, over top of this outfit is a long, black, coat with a tall collar, decorated with golden engravings. Each of the jacket's shoulders have two triangles, pink and blue. Her black long sleeves ends at the half of the forearm with rolled-up cuffs, each adorned with two pairs of golden buttons. Both hands wear split bicolor gloves—red on the palm and black on the back—in the latter appears a wide golden half-octagonal shaped cut, which functions as a trim. On the back of her coat, an inscription written in golden chinese characters reading her name is found. The bottom of the coat is decorated by pink and blue belts with golden clasps. And most impressively, the inner-lining of the coat has an incredibly detailed print of a golden Chinese dragon. As for her leg wear, she wears matching knee-high black socks, with brown belts at the top. For her shoes, she wears simple white sneakers with blue and pink accents.

Relationships

• Mejiro Palmer - Roommate. Someone reliable that Ace counts on. As a roommate, Palmer naturally looks out for Ace and helps Ace with adapting to the city, from taking Ace to a "city-style" fun tour along with Daitaku Helios, until helping Ace whenever she's having a hard time in transferring trains.
  • This roommate pairing is likely due to both of them sharing the same Runaway (大逃げ oonige) running style, as well as once being seen as underdogs that defeated Symboli Rudolf and Tokai Teio.
• Mr. C.B. - Friend and rival. They both get along very well, with Ace seems to never restrict any of C.B.'s unconventional ways, which in return has C.B. thinking that Ace is one of the few Umamusume who is actually interesting to race against and run with. Before making it clear that they are each other's rival, Ace initially admired C.B. and saw her as a wall to overcome to become the true ace. Ace once expressed that C.B. is the closest thing she ever had to a role model. To her, C.B. is what an "ace" should be like. Due to this, she originally struggled to see C.B. as her equal let alone rival, thinking C.B. is in a league of her own. This soon changes after C.B. expressed her dislike at Ace seeing her only as an obstacle, neither as a rival nor as Mr. C.B. herself. Later on, they're finally able to see each other on the same level—as rivals, as equals.
  • IRL, both of them are in the same generation, the two raced against each other several times in real life. Even though they raced together a lot and had their own share of wins and losses, some of Katsuragi Ace's wins were overshadowed by Mr. C.B.'s domination in the Triple Classics. The influence of Mr C.B.'s triple crown can be seen on how a lot of newspaper headlines during that time only mentioned Mr. C.B. even if Katsuragi Ace was the one who won the race. These instances can be seen in their showdown during Kyoto Shimbun Hai 1983, where Ace finished first and Mr. C.B. at fourth, and Mainichi Okan 1984, with Ace successfully secured the first place and Mr. C.B. at second.
• Symboli Rudolf - Friend and rival. Having her first defeat handed by Ace, Rudolf places a great amount of respect on the said Umamusume. Rudolf thinks of Ace's impact on giving hopes and inspirations to many Umamusume as something powerful. This eventually prompted Rudolf to offer Ace a position in the Tracen Academy's student council committee, which Ace immediately turned down.
  • IRL, at the 1984 Japan Cup, other than being the first Japanese horse to win the prestigious race, Katsuragi Ace is also the first horse to ever break Symboli Rudolf's winning streak, with Ace finishing first and Rudolf finishing third.
• Tap Dance City - Tap Dance City looks up to her. She idolizes Ace greatly, as Ace's performance in Japan Cup was what motivated her to go to Japan. Prior to Tap's race in Japan Cup, Ace plays the role of special mentor to help Tap recreating the same great escape as she once did back then.
  • IRL, Tetsuzo Sato, Tap Dance City's main jockey, was inspired to become a jockey after watching Katsuragi Ace's run in the 1984 Japan Cup. In 2003, he won the same Japan Cup with Tap Dance City, using the same Runaway style as jockey Nishiura Katsuichi did with Katsuragi Ace back in 1984.
• Daitaku Helios - Friend? Helios can be seen whenever Palmer is around, so Ace and Helios eventually became good friends through Palmer's connection. Helios' special nickname for Ace is 'Ragi-paisen' and 'Ragiragi'. Though it's shown that Ace doesn't really understand Helios' lingo more often than not, both still get along very well.
  • IRL, they share the same Runaway (大逃げ oonige) running style. This is most likely the basis for their friendship, along with Palmer and Tap.
• Twin Turbo - Underclassman. Sharing the same high-spirited, explosive personality, both get along well.
  • IRL, both are known for their Runaway running style.
• Ikuno Dictus - Underclassman. They get along quite well, from cycling together until playing around along with Turbo.
  • IRL, Katsuragi Ace and Ikuno Dictus shared the same jockey, Nishiura Katsuichi.
• Kawakami Princess, Hokko Tarumae - Underclassmen. Ace can be seen giving training advice and encouragement to them more often than not, playing the role of reliable upperclassman.
  • IRL, Katsuragi Ace's main jockey from his run at Kyoto Shimbun Hai 1983 until Arima Kinen 1984, Nishiura Katsuichi, had also trained Kawakami Princess and Hokko Tarumae.
• Sirius Symboli - Classmate and friend. Ace acknowledges Sirius as someone smart with good grades.
• Maruzensky - Classmate and friend. The two can be seen bonding over driving-related conversations and activities. Maruzensky's driving skill motivates Ace to improve hers before getting her actual driving license.
• Mejiro Ramonu - Classmate and friend.
  • Though they didn't cross paths in their real life career, they are generally categorized in the Showa group (昭和組 Shōwa-gumi) horses. This term is loosely used by fans to refer to Umamusume whose real life counterparts were active and retired before 1989, namely Maruzen, Rudolf, C.B., Ace, Sirius, and Ramonu.

• She was announced during the 2nd Anniversary PakaLive TV stream on February 22, 2023.
• She has a little sister who made a faceless appearance in her career story.
• She's unbelievably good at playing dead, which she once pranked Twin Turbo and Matikanetannhauser with in one of her career events. On top of that, she's quite fearless when it comes to ghosts and scary things, once told casually investigating haunted site in one of her area talks with Mr. C.B. In one of her voice lines, she goes on how she's often invited to a horror movie watch-party because she makes the movie half as scary just by being there.
• She is one of the very few Umamusume in-game who is able to use Runaway (大逃げ oonige) strategy. The others are Silence Suzuka, Twin Turbo, Mejiro Palmer, Daitaku Helios, and Tap Dance City.
