Only Here

In a year drowned in tears, in order to wash away the disappointment, only here, I couldn't lose.

In a year where joy was forgotten, for us to reclaim that spark, only here, I don't want to lose.
—Portraits of the Buccephalus [1]

Verxina is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2011 to 2014. Known as the rival to famous Triple Tiara winner Gentildonna, she suffered five straight graded race runner up defeats before finally winning the Victoria Mile in 2013 and 2014, becoming the first mare to win the race consecutively.

Name Origin

From the advice of owner Sasaki Kazuhiro's wife, Kanako Enomoto, she believed that horses with V in their name (Air Groove, Neo Universe) produced good results.[2] Enamoto came up with the name "Вершина", meaning "peak" in Russian and transliterated to Verxina in the Latin alphabet. [3]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2011)

Verxina made her debut on August 28th, in a 1,800-meter maiden race at Sapporo Racecourse. With the help of jockey Yuichi Fukunaga, she won by 1 and 1/4 lengths, marking her first win for owner Sasaki Kazuhiro.

Her next race was the open-class Kogiku Sho on November 13th. Although she entered the race as the overwhelming favorite, she failed to meet expectations and placed 3rd. While she was initially set to compete in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, she was scratched due to not accumulating enough prize money.[4] Instead, she was entered into the open-class Erica Sho on December 11th, where she won with ease.

Three-year-old season (2012)

On February 11th, Verxina started the year off with a win in the Queen Cup (G3). With her first graded victory, she then entered the Oka Sho on April 8th, the first leg of the Triple Tiara. During the race, Verxina raced ahead of the pack, as she ran right behind the front-runners. She attempted to take the lead at the final corner, but Gentildonna had caught up to her, leaving Verxina in 2nd place.

Verxina then ran in the Japanese Oaks on May 20th, in hopes that she would attain a classic victory. As Verxina settled within the pack, she gradually advanced at the third and final corner. She eventually broke out of the pack, but with Gentildonna marking her from behind, she rapidly lost the lead, and placed 2nd once again.

After her summer break, Verxina returned to compete in the Rose Stakes (G2) on September 16th. Verxina marked Gentildonna during the race, but she lost and placed 2nd to Gentildonna by less than half a length. She then confronted her once more in the Shuka Sho on October 14th. In a bold move, Verxina began to take the lead, instead of chasing the front-runners from behind. Cherry Medusa began to take the lead, leaving Verxina in 2nd for a moment.

However, at the final straight, both Verxina and Gentildonna began to accelerate at rapid speeds, and they ran side by side as they reached the finish line. After deliberation, it was decided that Gentildonna had won by a small margin of seven centimeters. As Gentildonna became the fourth filly in history to win the Triple Tiara, Verxina had placed 2nd in all of the classic races. Despite this, she became the overwhelming favorite in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 11th, her final race of the year. During the race, she struggled as the ground was heavy from the rainfall. While she eventually settled within the average pace, she could not catch up to the 7th favorite Rainbow Dahlia, and she placed 2nd.

Four-year-old season (2013)

As it was planned to have her compete in the Victoria Mile, Verxina was entered into the Osaka Hai (G2) on March 31st.[5] Though she was initially ahead during the race, she lost momentum and placed 6th to Orfevre, the 2011 Triple Crown Winner.

On May 12th, Verxina competed in the Victoria Mile as the overwhelming favorite. Settling within the pack, she began to accelerate at the final straight, as other horses like Whale Capture and Meine Isabel were chasing her. In a photo finish, the winner had to be deliberated. It was then determined that Verxina was the winner, as she was ahead by a small margin. With this, Verxina had attained her first G1 victory.

However, she did not win any other races throughout the rest of 2013. On June 2nd, she was entered in the Yasuda Kinen, where she lost to Lord Kanaloa and placed 8th. After months of rest, she entered the Kyoto Daishoten (G2) on October 6th, where she placed 8th once again. Despite being the overwhelming favorite in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 10th, she placed 10th and lost to Meisho Mambo, the year's Japanese Oaks winner. Weeks later, on November 24th, she entered her final race of the year, the Japan Cup, where she faced off with Gentildonna once again. As she lost momentum, Gentildonna won the Japan Cup for the second time since the year prior, while Verxina was in 7th place.

Five-year-old season (2014)

Verxina's losing streak continued into the year, as she lost the Tokyo Shimbun Hai (G3) on February 17th, placing 11th. On April 12th, she once again placed 11th in the Hanshin Himba Stakes (G2). Due to her constant losses, she was the 11th favorite in the Victoria Mile on May 18th. However, she won this race, not only attaining her second and final G1 victory, she had finally earned a victory ever since the Victoria Mile a year prior. She also became the first mare in history to win the Victoria Mile consecutively.

She did not win her remaining three races. On June 29th, despite fighting hard in the straight, she lost to Gold Ship and placed 3rd. While there were plans to have her compete in the Fuchu Himba Stakes (G3), it was decided to have her rest throughout the summer instead.[6] She then placed 11th in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 16th. Her final race was the Arima Kinen on December 28th, where she encountered Gentildonna for the final time as they were both retiring after the race. As she struggled during the race, Verxina could not catch up to the horses in front of her, and she placed 14th, the lowest in her career. On that same day, she was deregistered as a racehorse.[7]

Retirement

Verxina retired to become a broodmare at Northern Farm. Since 2016, she has had numerous foals, with them having minor success in their racing careers.

Trivia

  • As Verxina continued to struggle in G1 races, her owner, Kazuhiro Sasaki, designed a blue "X" on her menko so that she could "counter" Gentildonna.[8]
  • She is affectionately called "Viru" by Shinji Yasuda.[9]
  • She likes it when her ears are touched.[9]
  • She dislikes the sound of sirens and high-pitched noises in general.[9]
