Vivlos is a Japanese racehorse that was active from the 2015 to 2019. She was known for her international feat on the Dubai Turf, winning on 2017 and placing 2nd in 2018 and 2019.

Name Origin

Owner Kazuhiro Sasaki described her name as "From a Greek place name."[1] Vivlos comes from a village of the same name on the Greek island of Naxos.[2]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2015)

Vivlos debuted on October 24th, 2016, in a 1,600-meter turf race on Kyoto Racecourse. However, she lost to the winning horse Classic Lydia by three lengths. However, in her next race, she won by a half a length on November 21st. It was later discovered that Vivlos contracted an epiglottis entrapment disorder after resting, and she underwent surgery[3].

Three-year-old season (2016)

Vivlos returned months later to compete in the Tulip Sho on March 5th and the Flower Cup on March 21st, where she placed 12th in both races respectively. After four months of rest, she entered an open-class race where she won for the first time in months by four lengths. On September 10th, she fought hard in the Shion Stakes (G3), but lost and placed 2nd.

However, this placement earned her entry into the Shuka Sho, the final leg of the Triple Tiara. On October 16th, she raced within the middle of the pack, and in the final straight, overtook the horses in front of her and won the race, making this her first G1 victory[4].

Four-year-old season (2017)

On February 17th, Vivlos was invited to participate in the foreign G1 race Dubai Turf, a 1,800-meter race[5]. After the invitation, she competed in the Nakayama Kinen (G2) on February 26th, 2017, where she couldn't catch up in time and placed 5th.

On March 25th, Vivlos entered the Dubai Turf for the first time, where she raced from the very back throughout the duration of the race. In the final straight, she began to accelerate and surge past the other horses, winning the race and attaining her second and final G1 victory[6]. After the race, she returned to Japan and did not race until the fall.

On October 14th, she competed in the Fuchu Himba Stakes (G2), where she placed 2nd. Later on November 12th, she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, where she struggled despite being in a good position and placed 5th.

At the end of the year, Vivlos won the JRA Award for Best Older Filly or Mare[7].

Five-year-old season (2018)

Competing in the Nakayama Kinen again on February 25th, Vivlos did not accelerate in the final stretch, and placed 8th. She was set to compete in the Dubai Turf for the second time, and she entered the race on March 31st. While she accelerated in the final stretch, she could not reach the winning horse Benbatl and placed 2nd. She returned to Japan to compete in the Takarazuka Kinen, but placed 4th on June 24th.

In the fall, she competed in the Tenno Sho (Autumn), on October 28th, where she placed 8th. She then entered the Hong Kong Mile, initially as a retirement race. Despite placing 2nd, her impressive fight in the final straight against the mare Beauty Generation convinced her owner Kazuhiro Sasaki to postpone her retirement and retire in the Dubai Turf instead[8].

Six-year-old season (2019)

In her final race, on March 30th, 2019, she competed in the Dubai Turf for the third and final time. Racing from the back, she began to chase Almond Eye, the Triple Tiara winner from the previous year, by the final straight. Fighting hard in the stretch, she lost to Almond Eye by one length and a half and placed 2nd[9].

She was deregistered from the Japan Racing Association on April 10th.

Retirement

After retiring, she became a broodmare at Northern Farm. She had her first foal, a colt named Vencedores by the sire Lord Kanaloa, in 2020. She continues to work as a broodmare.
