Curren Bouquetd'or is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2018 to 2021. Known to fans as the "Silver Collector", Curren Bouquetd'or finished runner-up in three Grade 1 races and boasts lifetime earnings of 458,057,000 yen despite only winning 2 races. Her earnings rank 2nd best among JRA horses with 2 or fewer wins, only behind Sounds of Earth.[2]

Name Origin

Her owner Suzuki Takashi described the meaning of her name as "Crown name (Curren) and a golden bouquet (Buddhism). I hope the flowers of victory will bloom."[3] In Buddhist religion, golden flowers symbolize merit and purity, offered to the Buddha to express reverence and devotion.[4] Bouquetd'or also meant "golden bouquet" in French.

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2018)

Curren Bouquetd'or made her debut on October 8th, in a 1,600-meter turf race on Tokyo Racecourse. Despite utilizing a strong spurt, she could not catch up and placed 2nd to Danon Kingly, who went on to win the Yasuda Kinen in 2021. She attempted to break out of her maiden once again on November 18th, but she lost once again and placed 3rd. On December 16th, she finally won, breaking out of her maiden.

Three-year-old season (2019)

On February 11th, Curren Bouquetd'or challenged her first graded race, the Queen Cup (G3). Though she fought hard, she lost momentum and placed 4th to Chrono Genesis. Because of this, she didn't have enough prize money to enter the Oka Sho, so she competed in the open-class Sweetpea Stakes on April 28th instead. While she won this race, this was the only race she would ever win at that point.

She was entered into the Japanese Oaks on May 19th, as the 12th favorite. Running within the pack, Curren Bouquetd'or ran alongside Chrono Genesis in the final straight. However, Loves Only You surged from the back, and overtook both of them. Though unpopular, she had placed 2nd despite it, which gained attention.[5] On September 7th, she challenged the Shion Stakes (G3), where she lost and placed 3rd. In the Shuka Sho, on October 13th, she fought hard in the stretch to place 2nd to Chrono Genesis. Curren Bouquetd'or then challenged the Japan Cup on November 24th, where she placed 2nd once again to Suave Richard.

Four-year-old season (2020)

Her 2nd place streak continued on into the year, as she lost the Kyoto Kinen (G2) to Chrono Genesis on February 16th. After the race, Curren Bouquetd'or was sent to the United Arab Emirates to compete in the Dubai Sheema Classic, a foreign G1 race. She arrived to the country and prepared for the race, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all races in Dubai were cancelled, and she was sent home.[6]

For seven months, Curren Bouquetd'or did not race since the cancellation. She made her return on September 27th in the All Comers (G2), where she placed 2nd. She was then entered into the Japan Cup on November 29th, which had particular attention to it due to the competitors in the field. Daring Tact, the first undefeated Triple Tiara winner, alongside the undefeated Triple Crown winner Contrail, were competing. Not only that, but Almond Eye, who had eight G1 victories at that point, was entered as she was retiring right after. The rarity of three Triple Crown/Tiara winners competing in a race was even described as a "dream race" in articles.

Running as the 5th favorite, Curren Bouquetd'or ran within the pack, as Kiseki set the pace as a front-runner. In the final straight, Curren Bouquetd'or surged through, but Daring Tact and Contrail were already ahead of her as they were chasing Almond Eye. With Almond Eye winning the race, and becoming the record holder for most G1 victories in Japan, Curren Bouquetd'or placed a close 4th. Curren Bouquetd'or's final race of the year was the Arima Kinen on December 27th, where she lost and placed 5th to Chrono Genesis.

Five-year-old season (2021)

After months of rest, she competed in the Nikkei Sho (G2) on March 27th, where she placed 2nd. On May 2nd, she was entered into the Tenno Sho (Spring), where despite placing 3rd, this was one of the highest placements in the race for a mare. On June 27th, she once again competed with Chrono Genesis in the Takarazuka Kinen, though she lost to her and placed 4th. After the summer break, she was entered into the Tenno Sho (Autumn), where she ran poorly and placed 12th, the lowest in her career.

Though she was scheduled to challenge the Japan Cup, she was unable to run in the race due to desmitis in her left front leg.[7] It was then planned to have her compete in the American Jockey Club Cup (G2), but her ligament condition did not improve.[8] Because of this, it was announced that she was to retire and become a broodmare on November 30th.[9]

Retirement

She retired to become a broodmare. She continues performing her breeding duties.

Trivia

  • Curren Bouquetd'or and Almond Eye are stablemates, and they are seen getting along well.[10]
  • For her losses yet good placements in G1 races, she has been referred to as "Reiwa Stay Gold". Though her temperament isn't as bad as Stay Gold's[11]
