Loves Only You is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2018 to 2021. She is known as an international trailblazing horse, becoming the first Japanese horse since Cesario to win a United States Grade 1 race, and the first Japanese horse to win a Grade 1 in three countries.
Loves Only You and Marche Lorraine's wins at the Breeders' Cup began an era of Japan's large scale involvement in United States Grade 1 racing, having increased participation of Japanese racehorses in the Breeders' Cup and Kentucky Derby. This eventually led to Forever Young's iconic victory at the 2025 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Name Origin
Owners DMM Dream Club, officially described her name as: "To show love to everyone. Inspired by the mother's name."[2]
Racing career
Two-year-old season (2018)
Loves Only You made her debut on November 3rd in a 1,800-meter turf race on Kyoto Racecourse. While she was originally set to compete earlier in the summer, Yoshito Yahagi decided against this. While she suffered a late start, she gradually began to get a good position, and she eventually won the race by one and one-fourths of a length.
She was then scheduled to race in the Shiragiku Sho on November 25th, where she won once again. While she initially set to compete in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies after, due to sudden weight loss, that plan was cancelled quickly[3].
Three-year-old season (2019)
After winning the Wasurenagusa Sho on April 7th, Loves Only You was initially going to prepare for the Oka Sho, the first leg of the Triple Tiara. However, she contracted issues with her hooves, so her plan to compete was quickly cancelled. Instead, Loves Only You was set to compete in the Japanese Oaks on May 19th.
While Loves Only You was in an unfavorable position during the race, once Curren Bouquetd'or and Chrono Genesis were ahead of her, she quickly chased from behind and overtook them both by a head, achieving her first G1 victory. Her record of 2 minutes and 22.4 seconds also set up a new record for the race, which remained unbeaten. Though scheduled to compete in the Shuka Sho, she dropped out due to inflammation in her right hoof, and she instead competed in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 10th[4]. She was defeated by Lucky Lilac, and placed 3rd, ending off her classic year.
Four-year-old season (2020)
After receiving an invitation, Loves Only You was set to compete in the Dubai Sheema Classic, a foreign G1. She arrived at Al Maktoum International Airport on March 19th to prepare. While the race was initially going to be a no-spectator race due to COVID-19[5], it was then announced on the 22nd that the race would be postponed due to safety reasons[6]. Because of this, Loves Only You alongside other horses returned to Japan on the 30th.
It was then announced by DMM Dream Club that she would compete in the Victoria Mile on May 17th[7]. Struggling to chase in the final straight, she lost momentum and placed 7th, losing to Almond Eye. After months of rest, she returned on November 15th to challenge the Queen Elizabeth II Cup once again. Placing 3rd once again to Lucky Lilac, her final race of the year was planned to be the Arima Kinen on December 27th. She suffered a loss to the previous year's Shuka Sho winner Chrono Genesis, and placed 10th, the lowest in her career.
Five-year-old season (2021)
Loves Only You returned to compete in the Kyoto Kinen on February 14th, and won after nearly two years of losses. She was then set to compete in the Dubai Sheema Classic, after missing it last year. Competing on March 27th, she began to accelerate at the third corner, marking Chrono Genesis. However, both got overtaken by the winning horse Mishriff, and Loves Only You placed 3rd.
After her close loss, she traveled to Hong Kong to compete in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on April 25th. Holding off Daring Tact who was chasing her from behind, Loves Only You continued to accelerate and she won by three-quarters of a length, making this race her second G1 victory. She then returned to Japan to compete in the Sapporo Kinen, where she placed 2nd to Sodashi. Despite this loss however, it was planned for Loves Only You to compete overseas in America and challenge the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, an American G1 race that no Japanese mare has won before.
On November 6th, after months of preparation, Loves Only You was set to compete in the Breeders' Cup race. Running in the pack, Loves Only You ran behind the leaders. In the final straight, she began to overtake the horses in front, and achieved her third victory. This race made her the first Japanese horse to win the race, alongside this being her jockey Yuga Kawada's first overseas victory.
It was then announced that her final race would be the Hong Kong Cup on December 12th[8]. Despite horses desperately chasing her in the stretch, Loves Only You held them off and achieved her fourth and final G1 victory. This victory also cemented her as the first Japanese horse to win G1 races in three countries, and she was awarded the JRA Award for Best Older Filly or Mare[9]. She was also awarded the American Champion Turf Female for her historic victory in the Breeders' Cup[10].
When she returned to Japan, a retirement ceremony was held for her on January 30th, 2022 at Tokyo Racecourse[11]. She was then deregistered as a racehorse on February 7th, and returned to Northern Farm.
Retirement
Loves Only You retired to work as a broodmare at Northern Farm. She had her first foal, a colt named Loves Premium by the sire Epiphaneia, on February 27th, 2023. She continues to work as a broodmare.
