—JRA Hero Legends[1]

Daring Tact is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2019 to 2022. She became the 6th racehorse to achieve the fillies' Triple Tiara in 2020, winning the Oka Sho, Japanese Oaks and Shuka Sho, and is the first filly in Japanese history to win all three races undefeated.

Name Origin

Normandy Thoroughbred Racing described her name as: "A combination of the words bold and tactics. Inspired by the father's (Epiphaneia) and mother's (Daring Bird) name." [2]

Racing career

2 years old season (2019)

Daring Tact made her debut race on November 16th in a 1,600 meters race at Kyoto Racecourse. She won her debut race by 1 1/2 lengths. This brought her breeder Hasegawa Bokujo their first win in the JRA after three years.

3 years old season (2020)

Daring Tact's first race in the year was the 1,600 meters Listed Race Elfin Stakes at Kyoto racecourse on 8 February. Before the race, she was agitated behind the gate, and she didn’t break very well. However, she ended up settling during the race, taking the lead and winning by four lengths with a record-breaking time of 1:33.6.

After the Elfin Stakes, Daring Tact did not enter any prep races, instead going directly to the Oka Sho. The race was run in heavy rain. Daring Tact was restrained towards the rear of the field before making rapid progress on the wide outside on the final turn. She maintained her progress as the front-runners got tired, overtaking Resistencia in the last 50 meters and winning by one and a half lengths. Not only was it the first G1 victory for Daring Tact, but also the first for the trainer Haruki Sugiyama, for the owner Normandy Thoroughbred Racing, and for the breeder Hasegawa Bokujo.

While Resistencia went to the NHK Mile Cup, Daring Tact's next race was the 2,400-meter Japanese Oaks. This was a big step up in distance for her, since she had only raced 1,600-meter races previously, but that didn't stop Daring Tact from being the overwhelming favorite in the race, with odds of 1.6. Daring Tact started well before being settled towards the rear of the field as Smile Kana set the pace. Stablemates Win Mighty and Win Marilyn went past the early leaders in the straight and looked to have the race between then, but Daring Tact, having briefly struggled to obtain a clear run, accelerated through a narrow gap. She gained the advantage in the final strides and won by half a length. The Japanese Oaks victory also meant that Daring Tact became the second undefeated Fillies Double Crown since Miss Onward in 1957.

After the summer break, Daring Tact once again did not enter any prep race for the Final Leg of the Fillies Triple Crown, the Shuka Sho, as the favorite in the race, with odds of 1.4. She was a bit agitated behind the gate, but broke well and settled towards the rear as Maltese Diosa set a steady pace, before making a forward move when approaching the final turn and swinging to the outside as the fillies entered the straight.

"Bloom and Bloom! Flower of the Triple Crown! Strong! Robust! And beautiful! Daring Tact takes the Triple Crown!" (咲いた、咲いた、三冠の華! 強く、逞しく、美しく!デアリングタクト三冠達成!)

Daring Tact once again gained the advantage 200 meters from the finish and won in style by one and a quarter length and three quarters of a length from the outsiders Magic Castle and Soft Fruit. Daring Tact not only became the sixth filly to complete the Japanese Fillies Triple Crown, but also became the first filly to do so while still undefeated.

After becoming the undefeated Japanese Fillies Triple Crown winner, Daring Tact went to the Japan Cup, where she raced against Almond Eye, another Fillies Triple Crown winner who won it in 2018, and Contrail, who was also an undefeated Japanese Triple Crown winner from the generation of the same year. This race marked the first time where three Triple Crown winners raced together in the same race. Daring Tact settled in seventh place before staying on strongly in the straight, but she sustained her first defeat as she came home third behind Almond Eye and Contrail.

For becoming the Fillies Triple Crown winner, Daring Tact was unanimously voted Best Three-Year-Old Filly at the JRA Awards for 2020.

4 years old season (2021)

However, Daring Tact never won a race again as she progressed after the success of the Fillies Triple Crown. She placed second at the 2021 Kinko Sho after the 10th favorite in the race, Gibeon. After that, she traveled to Hong Kong and raced in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, placing third after Loves Only You and Glory Vase. After returning from Hong Kong to Japan, it was discovered that she developed suspensory desmitis, causing the rest of the year to be scrapped.

5 years old season (2022)

After a long rest, Daring Tact returned in 2022, at her first race of the year, the Victora Mile, she finished sixth after Sodashi. Then at the Takarazuka Kinen, though she was the second fastest horse in the final furlongs, she placed third after Titleholder and Hishi Iguazu. After the summer break, she entered the G2 Sankei Sho All Comers, but couldn't accelerate and placed sixth. Later on, she placed sixth again in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Hanshin Racecourse.

Two weeks after, Daring Tact enter the Japan Cup again, instead of the usual jockey Kohei Matsuyama, she was ridden by Tom Marquand. At the start of the race, she was at the back of the field and managed to speed up after entering the straight. However, at the end of the straight, she was affected by Shahryar and had to pull out, thus losing her chance at winning and eventually ending in fourth place.

6 years old season (2023)

At the start of 2023, Daring Tact was still active and planned to race in the G3 Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia. However, she was found to be unsteady after training on February 7th. Although there was no obvious injury after an X-ray examination, the decision to withdraw from the race and go into recuperation was made after careful consideration by the team.

After a recurrence of suspensory desmitis was discovered during her recuperation, the decision to arrange her retirement was finally made after discussions as she had never won a race since the Shuka Sho. The horse's registration was officially cancelled on October 26th.

Retirement

After retiring, Daring Tact went back to her home, Okada Stud, and become a broodmare. In 2024, Daring Tact was bred to Benbatl (2018 Dubai Turf Winner), resulting her first child born in 2025.

Trivia

  • Daring Tact only ran 5 races to win the Filles' Triple Crown, the least amount of races among the others.
  • Coincidentally, Daring Tact became the Undefeated Triple Tiara Winner in the same year that Contrail became that year's undefeated Triple Crown Champion.
    • Also, like other undefeated Triple Crown winners, they lost their very next start. Coincidentally, they both lost at that year's Japan Cup to Almond Eye.
  • Daring Tact is the first Fillies' Triple Crown winner since Still in Love to not have any connection with Shadai.
    • Apapane, Gentildonna, Almond Eye, and all 2010s Triple Crown winners have some connection with Shadai.
    • The next Triple Tiara winner after Daring Tact, Liberty Island, who won the Fillies Triple Crown in 2023, has connection with Shadai.
  • Daring Tact, along with Still in Love, are Triple Tiara winners that never won a race anymore after their win in the Shuka Sho and retired without furthermore wins.
    • Mejiro Ramonu also never won a race after achieving the Triple Tiara and retired, but at that time, the final leg of the Triple Tiara was the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Shuka Sho wasn't inaugurated yet.
    • Liberty Island's situation was similar, but instead of retirement, her career ended prematurely and was euthanized after a poor prognosis diagnosis in the Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth II Cup.
    • On the other hand, Contrail, who also achieved the Triple Crown in 2020, went on to win the Japan Cup in 2021 after suffering a year-long losing streak after his Kikuka Sho win, just like Daring Tact did after the Shuka Sho.
      • 2020 also marked the first time both the Triple Tiara and the Triple Crown were achieved.
