JRA Hero Biography, No. 88[1]

Chrono Genesis is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2018 to 2021. She is the 3rd JRA horse in history to win 3 "Grand Prix" (Takarazuka Kinen, Arima Kinen) races since Speed Symboli and Grass Wonder and the first mare to do so.

Name Origin

Owners Sunday Racing describes the meaning of Chrono Genesis's name as "a combination of the mother's name (Chronologist) and Genesis."[2] Genesis means "beginning" in Greek. [3]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2018)

Chrono Genesis made her debut on September 2nd, 2018 in an 1,800-meter turf race on Kokura Racecourse. Originally set to debut on Niigata Racecourse, her debut was delayed due to the World All-Star Jockeys event taking place around the same time, so a jockey couldn't be arranged for her yet. So, a week later, she would debut and win by two lengths[4].

In the listed Ivy Stakes, she once again won, making it her second victory. Her last leg would be 32.5 seconds, which is the fastest record for two-year-old races on Tokyo Racecourse[5]. After this, she entered the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, her first attempt at a G1 victory. Chrono Genesis suffered a late start which forced her to race from the very back, and she began to chase at the final straight, but could not reach the winning horse Danon Fantasy[6]. This 2nd place finish was her first defeat, and her last race of the year.

Three-year-old season (2019)

After this, she ran in the Queen Cup (G3) on February 11th, 2019. She accelerated in the last spurt and won, making the race her first graded victory. Later, she entered the Oka Sho on April 7th, the first leg of the Triple Tiara. Despite Chrono Genesis surging through at the final straight, Gran Alegria was already in the lead, so she ended up placing 3rd[7]. A month later, she entered the Japanese Oaks on May 19th, where she faced off Loves Only You and Curren Bouquetd'or. As Chrono Genesis chased Curren Bouquetd'or who was in the lead, Loves Only You suddenly began to chase from behind, overtake the both of them, and won the race[8].

Chrono Genesis placed 3rd, and she rested until the fall. Instead of running a trial race, she went straight for the Shuka Sho on October 13th. Interestingly, since Gran Alegria was resting until the Hanshin Cup in December due to pus accumulation in her left front leg[9], and Loves Only You had to drop out due to hoof inflammation on her right hoof[10], this made it the first time in 17 years that both the Oka Sho winner and the Japanese Oaks winner were absent for the Shuka Sho. During the final stretch of the race, Chrono broke out of the pack and won by half a length, which earned her a G1 victory for the first time[11].

On November 10th, she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup. However, she placed 5th and lost to Lucky Lilac, ending off her classic year.

Four-year-old season (2020)

After months of rest, she entered the Kyoto Kinen (G2) and won it on February 16th, 2020. A few months later, on April 5th, she faced off Lucky Lilac once more in the Osaka Hai (G1) on April 5th. Despite chasing well in the stretch, she could not catch up to Lucky Lilac, and placed 2nd in the race[12]. Two months later, she entered the Takarazuka Kinen as the 2nd favorite on June 28th. She waited patiently throughout the race, and in the final straight, she broke out the pack and won the race by six lenghths, making it her second G1 victory[13].

A couple months later, she returned in the fall on November 1st for the Tenno Sho (Autumn). She ran from the back of the pack and began to surge in the final leg, but she couldn't reach the popular mare Almond Eye and she placed 3rd[14]. After, on December 27th, she entered the Arima Kinen as the most popular. Once the escaping horses Babbitt and Fierement tired out in the stretch, Chrono Genesis surged past the both of them and won by a neck[15]. This was not only her third G1 victory, but the second time a mare has won the Grand Prix races consecutively since Lys Gracieux in 2019.

Five-year-old season (2021)

In the beginning of the year, Chrono Genesis received the JRA Special Award for her consecutive Grand Prix victories[16]. Her first race was the Dubai Sheema Classic on March 27th, 2021, a foreign G1 race. While she overtook Loves Only You and ended up in the front, she got caught by the Irish-bred horse Mishriff, losing by a neck and placing 2nd. A while later on May 12th, it was officially announced that Chrono Genesis would travel to France to compete in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a G1 race no Japanese horse has won so far[17].

But before that, she entered the Takarazuka Kinen for the second time on June 27th. While in a good position, she utilized a powerful spurt to pass the escaping horses Lei Papale and Unicorn Lion and win the race once again, which made this her fourth and final G1 victory[18]. She became the first mare in history to win the Grand Prix three times, and the first horse since Gold Ship in 2014 to win the Takarazuka Kinen twice.

Chrono Genesis left Japan on September 24th to go to France. A few weeks later on October 3rd, she entered the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as the 3rd favorite due to her track record and pedigree, having being sired by Bago, the winner of the 2004 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. While she lead the pack for most of the race, she eventually began to lose strength in the final straight, and placed 7th[19]. After this, it was announced by Sunday Racing that she would retire after the Arima Kinen at the end of the year[20]. On December 26th, Chrono Genesis surged through in the final straight, but couldn't catch up to Efforia and placed 3rd[21].

After the race, a retirement ceremony was held for Chrono Genesis at Nakayama Racecourse[22]. She was deregistered from the Japan Racing Association on December 28th.

Retirement

Chrono Genesis retired as a broodmare on Northern Farm. She had her first foal, a colt named Bereshit by the sire Epiphaneia, on February 15th, 2023. She has also birthed a filly in 2024 by the sire Saturnalia and a filly in 2025 by the sire Equinox. She continues to work as a broodmare.

Trivia

  • Chrono Genesis was known to be a very quiet horse.[23]
  • Chrono Genesis was the second G1-winning foal out of Chronologist, as her older half-sister, Normcore, won G1 races before her.[Note 1]
  • Yuichi Kitamura was her main jockey except for her last three races. This is because on May 2nd, 2021, during a maiden race, a horse hit the horse that he was jockeying, and it caused his horse to trip. Kitamura fell during the process, and he was forced to recuperate for a year due to the multiple bone fractures he sustained.[24]
