Lucky Lilac is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2017 to 2020.

Name Origin

Sunday Racing describes the name as "A five-petal lilac flower (symbol of luck)."[1] In many cultures around the world, five-petal lilacs, rare compared to commonly found four-petal lilacs, are eaten for good luck and happiness.[2]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2017)

Lucky Lilac made her debut on August 20th in 1,600-meter turf race at Niigata Racecourse. After winning her debut by one length and a half, she went on to win the Artemis Stakes (G3) on October 28th, her first graded victory.

Her final race of the year was the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies on December 10th, her first G1 race. Breaking out at the homestretch, she won the race by three-quarters of a length. Earning her first G1 victory, Lucky Lilac received the JRA Award for Best Two-Year-Old Filly for her efforts.

Three-year-old season (2018)

Aiming for the Triple Tiara, Lucky Lilac started off the year with a victory in the Tulip Sho (G2) on March 3rd. As she held a good position during the race, she broke out at the final straight and won by two lengths. With this victory, she gained priority entry to the Oka Sho, the Triple Tiara's first leg.

On April 8th, Lucky Lilac competed in the Oka Sho. As the overwhelming favorite, she ran within a good position throughout the race. Using her usual strategy, she broke out of the stretch and briefly held the lead. However, her win streak came to an end when Almond Eye, the second favorite who won the Shinzan Kinen (G3) this year, chased behind her and overtook her by three-quarters of a length.

Suffering her first defeat, Lucky Lilac then competed in the Japanese Oaks on May 20th. At the 400-meter mark, both her and Almond Eye began to run side by side, and by the 200-meter mark, Almond Eye surged past her and won by two lengths. After the race, she took a break for a couple of months.

While Lucky Lilac was initially scheduled to compete in the Rose Stakes (G2) in the fall, it was discovered that she had swelling in the ball node of her right leg[3]. Not only that, Shu Ishibashi, her usual jockey, was injured, so Yuichi Kitamura replaced him during the Shuka Sho[4].

On October 14th, Lucky Lilac entered the Shuka Sho as her final race of the year. While she ran within the pack as usual, she did not accelerate at the final straight, and not only did she lose to Almond Eye once again, she also placed 9th, the lowest in her career.

Four-year-old season (2019)

Lucky Lilac started off the year by challenging the Nakayama Kinen (G2) on February 24th, with Shu Ishibashi returning as her jockey. Fighting hard in the stretch, she lost to Win Bright and placed 2nd. As the overwhelming favorite, she entered the Hanshin Himba Stakes (G2) on April 4th, but suffered a disastrous defeat and placed 8th.

A month later, on May 12th, she challenged the Victoria Mile with high odds of winning as the overwhelming favorite. Running within a high pace set by the escaping horse Aerolithe, Lucky Lilac began to catch up in the stretch before Normcore overtook her and the others in front. Lucky Lilac lost this race and placed 4th. After months of rest, she returned to compete in the Fuchu Himba Stakes on October 14th, where she got overtaken and placed 3rd.

Lucky Lilac then competed in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 10th, with Christophe Soumillon as her jockey for the time being[5]. As she faced off the year's Japanese Oaks winner Loves Only You and the Shuka Sho winner Chrono Genesis, she ran within the pack as Crocosmia set a high pace by escaping. At the final straight, Lucky Lilac began to accelerate as the other horses chased behind her. She won by one-quarter of a length, marking her second G1 victory after consecutive losses.

On December 8th, Lucky Lilac challenged the Hong Kong Vase, her final race of the year. Despite an injury discovered in her left front leg two days before the race, she passed the examination[6]. Fighting hard in the stretch, she lost to Glory Vase and placed a close 2nd.

Five-year-old season (2020)

With Mirco Demuro as her jockey, Lucky Lilac started off the year with a 2nd place finish in the Nakayama Kinen on March 1st. Preparations were then made to have her challenge the Osaka Hai (G1) on April 5th. With strong competitors like Chrono Genesis, Blast Onepiece, and Danon Kingly participating in the race, Lucky Lilac was entered as the fifth favorite. Breaking out of the pack and holding off the charging Chrono Genesis in the final straight, she won the race, marking her third G1 victory. Not only that, she became the first mare to win the race after it was promoted to G1 status in 2017.

As the second favorite, Lucky Lilac entered the Takarazuka Kinen on June 28th, where despite briefly taking the lead, Chrono Genesis overtook her and won the race, leaving her in 6th place. Instead of taking a break during the summer, Lucky Lilac entered the Sapporo Kinen (G2) on August 23rd. As she accelerated at the stretch early, Normcore caught up to her, and she placed 3rd.

Christophe Lemaire was her jockey when she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup for the second time on November 15th. As the overwhelming favorite, she surged at the final straight and won the race, marking her fourth and final G1 victory. In a post-race interview, Lemaire thought about Lucky Lilac's strength during the race, and stated that "it's unfortunate that she was in the same generation as Almond Eye, because she would've been a legend if she wasn't there"[7].

On December 27th, Lucky Lilac entered the Arima Kinen, as it was her retirement race. Fighting hard in the homestretch, she lost to Chrono Genesis and placed 4th. She was then deregistered as a racehorse on January 4th, 2021.

Retirement

Lucky Lilac retired to become a broodmare at Northern Farm. She continues to work as a broodmare.
