Retirement and Death

Dictus retired in 1972 after the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in England, and stood stud at the Mares Farm[Haras de Saint-Maur? Confirmation needed] in France. Beginning with a 5th place finish in the stud rankings in 1978, he maintained a top-10 position every year thereafter. In 1980, he was purchased by Japan's Shadai Group. The following year, 1981, he achieved his highest ranking of 2nd place (in France). Furthermore, in 1983, his progeny won major American G1 races: Zalataia won the Oak Tree Invitational Stakes, and Palikaraki won the Arlington Handicap. In Japan, his first crop produced Scrum Dyna, winner of the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes, followed by numerous graded stakes winners including Soccer Boy, who won two G1 races.

While Europe produced long-distance horses, Japan saw mostly offspring suited for short to middle distances. However, Soccer Boy, a representative offspring known for his explosive speed and proficiency in mile to middle-distance races, sired numerous long-distance horses and power-type dirt horses as a stallion. Writer Kohei Muramoto refers to this bloodline characteristic originating from Dictus as the “blood of surprise”.

Dictus became one of the top stallions alongside Northern Taste in Shadai Farm. Additionally, he showed excellent compatibility with broodmares sired by Northern Taste, the leading stallion of the 1980s owned by the Shadai Group. The “Dictus x Northern Taste cross” was a pairing that Shadai's leader, Zenya Yoshida, took particular pride in.

On September 20th, 1989, Dictus died at the age of 23. His son, Soccer Boy became the successor of his bloodline. Soccer Boy's full sister, Golden Sash, had foaled Stay Gold. According to writer Makoto Yoshikawa, who was close friends with Yoshida, upon Dictus's death, Yoshida remarked, “He wasn't a Yokozuna, but he was a great Ozeki,”[Note 1] and showed a rare sentimental side, saying, “An era has ended.” Yoshikawa himself described Dictus as “one of the pillars supporting Shadai Farm,” adding, “While it's undoubtedly true that Northern Taste made Shadai Farm Japan's top stud farm, it wouldn't be accurate to forget Dictus's role as a supporting player.”[1]

Trivia

  • Many offspring of Dictus display a distinctive expression where when they were displeased, they would flatten their ears back and glare with their eyes rolled back.[1]
  • The term "Dictus Eye" comes from Dictus, and is possibly the first horse documented to have it, consequently having the trait to be named that way. The most notable characteristic of the Dictus Eye is the sclera being visible without the eye rolling back. This trait is sometimes passed onto his children, with Ikuno Dictus having it.
    • Tanino Gimlet, despite not being related to Dictus, has a Dictus Eye himself.
  • Dictus was known to be temperamental, his temperament was passed on to his children like Soccer Boy.

Notes

  1. Yokozuna and Ozeki are ranks in professional sumo. Yokozuna is the top rank, with Ozeki right below it. Yokozuna here likely refers to Northern Taste, as he was a top stallion alongside Dictus in Shadai Farm.
