Mejiro McQueen was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1990 to 1993. He was good at long-distance races and won four G1s. McQueen was the first horse to win the Spring Tenno Sho two years in a row, in 1991 and 1992. Additionally, his sire line, including Mejiro Asama, Mejiro Titan, and himself, won Tenno Sho races three generations in a row.[Note 1] McQueen was favored to win a third consecutive Spring Tenno Sho in 1993, but was defeated by Rice Shower.

Name Origin

His name comes from American actor Steve McQueen. Mejiro Farm named their 1987-born colts after American celebrities. This was the same for Mejiro Ryan and Mejiro Palmer.

Retirement and Death

After retirement, Mejiro McQueen became a stud horse, resting at Shadai Stallion Station in Hayakita (now Abira), Hokkaido. He began breeding in 1994 and was selected that same year as the 22nd JRA Hall of Fame horse. His first foals were born in 1995 and became eligible to race in 1997. On February 22, 1998, Eidai Queen won the Queen's Cup, becoming the first graded stakes winner among his offspring. While his direct progeny did not achieve outstanding results, his grandchildren through their dams shone brilliantly. Particularly notable was the “Golden Combination” with Stay Gold. Offspring from this pairing included Dream Journey and Orfevre, both of which came out of Oriental Art. And Gold Ship, who came out of Point Flag.

On April 3, 2006, after completing his breeding session, he suffered from a heart failure while resting in his stable, dying at the age of 19.

Trivia

  • Mejiro McQueen was known to be best friends with Sunday Silence when they were standing stud at Shadai Stallion Station.
    • At first, Sunday Silence was intimidated by Mejiro McQueen's huge size and tried to boss him around like he did with other horses, but was ignored. Eventually, Sunday Silence would soon grow fond of Mejiro McQueen, becoming friends in the process. The two were known for being so close that a rule was set in the farm that Mejiro McQueen must get into the pastures before Sunday Silence, as he would get mad if Mejiro McQueen wasn't there before him.
    • Their close friendship led to people joking that they were lovers, though they were both stallions. Later, their bloodlines merged when Sunday Silence's son, Stay Gold, mated with two of Mejiro McQueen's daughters, Point Flag and Oriental Art. The horses produced out of this combination left remarkable results, including Dream Journey, Orfevre and Gold Ship.
      • This specific combination, known as the "Golden Combination", is also sometimes called the "Sutema Combination", named after the sire Stay Gold and the damsire Mejiro McQueen.
      • The "Golden Combination" is also referred to as such because of the highly successful careers of the horses it would produce.
  • On technicality, Mejiro McQueen never placed below 4th place during his career. However, he was demoted to 18th place during the 1991 Tenno Sho (Autumn) due to hampering several horses by tracking into the inside rail just after starting.
  • Mejiro McQueen is one of the few Japanese horses to not have Hail to Reason in their pedigree.

Notes

  1. Asama and Titan won the Autumn Tenno Sho. Back then, Tenno Sho winners could not re-enter, and the Autumn race was also 3,200 meters, before being shortened to 2,000 meters in order to promote medium-distance tracks.
