Still in Love is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Biography

“My name is Still in Love. I... I'm not worthy of any more introduction... I like to... keep those things to myself...”

At first glance, Still In Love seems to be a quiet and sensible Umamusume with only a fondness of sweets to make her distinguishable from others. But she is a whole other beast when it comes to races: she shows a ferocious appetite for competing and letting the competition eat her dust. Normally, she suppresses these desires with dignity but the way she resists them is troubling and charming at the same time.

Appearance

Still in Love has long auburn hair that falls well past her waist. She has a white streak of hair in the center of her bangs. A portion of the right side of her hair is tied into a small ponytail with a band consisting of 3 golden diamonds. Wrapped around the back of her hair is red ribbon with golden trimming. Her ominous, half-lidded eyes are bright red, with a dark red ring around her pupil.

She is normally seen wearing a white veil with red outline and blue ear covers wrapped in red straps, with the left ear straps having a gold trim and tied with a ribbon. On the back of her veil, there are two gold-trimmed ribbons crossing each other starting from each ears which extends until her front side, and a heart-shaped ring at the center of the ribbons' intersection. Underneath her veil, her ears are of the same color as her hair.

Still in Love's racing uniform consists of a red dress with intricate golden heart designs on the skirt. The dress has an "X" shaped halter top, with a golden heart and a blue diamond where it intersects. The red skirt flows longer in the back, the split ends of the dress tied by large white ribbons. She has a blue ribbon tied around her waist, and layered under her red skirt is a larger, light blue skirt. Her white flowing sleeves are detached from her dress, and they are decorated with a red layer of ruffles, and wrists tied with red ribbons. Aside from her left ring fingernail, which has red nail polish, her fingernails remain unpainted. Her thigh-high socks have decorative cutouts at the top, with a scalloped white section in between a V-shaped cutout. She has red strings tied around both of her legs, and wears laced, red ballet flats with a gold trim.

Relationships

• Neo Universe - Roommate and friend. Neo Universe knows about Still in Love's "alter ego," but doesn't seem to mind it. She is shown to be supportive towards Still in Love, often offering her advice and hearing her out. Sometimes, they stargaze and observe the night sky together.
• Admire Groove - Rival. Still in Love's "alter ego" is especially fired up about racing with her, going as far as to chase after her and call her "her prey." The two are shown to be opposites; while Still in Love is full of warmth and love, Admire Groove rejects love and mentions being "cold" inside. Despite Admire Groove being the favorite in all three Triple Tiara races, it's Still in Love who wins them. Admire Groove is visibly upset about losing to Still in Love, which makes Still in Love wonder why Admire Groove dislikes her so much. Still in Love seems to respect Admire Groove a lot, especially after witnessing how many people cheer her on and root for her.
• Zenno Rob Roy - Friend and classmate. Both Still in Love and Zenno Rob Roy are soft-spoken and often go unnoticed, and the two find companionship in their joint love of reading.
  • IRL, Still in Love, Neo Universe, Admire Groove, and Zenno Rob Roy are all horses from the same 2003 generation.
    • While Neo Universe became a Double Crown champion on that year, Still in Love was that year's Triple Tiara champion.
• Mejiro Ramonu - Rival. Before Still in Love, Mejiro Ramonu was the first one to win the Triple Tiara. At the beginning of Still in Love's career, her trainer says Mejiro Ramonu was truly dazzling, which makes Still in Love jealous. After Mejiro Ramonu teases her about that, going as far as to imply she'd "steal" her trainer, Still in Love sets her sights on being the second Triple Tiara winner in history.
  • Mejiro Ramonu became the first Triple Tiara champion while the Queen Elizabeth II Cup was still the final leg, while Still in Love became the second Triple Tiara champion while the Shuka Sho is the final leg.
• Hokko Tarumae - Friend. Still in Love and Hokko Tarumae share a passion for sweets, and Hokko Tarumae sometimes makes some for her. While Hokko Tarumae can sometimes find Still in Love's intensity unnerving, she finds Still in Love's mannerisms cute and wants to learn from her cuteness. They have gone golfing together.
  • IRL, they were both jockeyed by Miyuki Hideaki in all but five of Hokko Tarumae's races.
• Sweep Tosho - Friend. Sweep Tosho mistakes Still in Love for a vampire due to her alter ego, and takes it upon herself to help her with what she mistakes as blood-drinking urges, as well as keeping her out of direct sunlight.
• Manhattan Cafe - Friend. They drink coffee together, and discuss how to brew it to perfection.
• Kiseki - Friend. Kiseki helps her with updating her social media, since Still in Love doesn't use it very often.
  • IRL, Still in Love and Kiseki were Shimokobe Farm's first G1-winning filly and colt respectively.

Trivia

• She was first teased in the trailer for Party Dash that was revealed on the Nintendo Direct live stream on June 21st, 2023, where everyone tried to guess the running Umamusume on the game's logo.
• She was then fully announced during the 3rd Anniversary PakaLive TV stream on February 22, 2024.
• In her career mode, there is a unique effect that has her grow more unhinged as her career progresses, affecting her expressions, commentary and the screen, which has a red-tinging effect that grows stronger over time.
  • As this is disturbing to some players and can cause motion sickness, players are warned about these effects before starting her career, with the option to turn them off at any time. They are also reminded to keep an eye on their physical condition as they play. Players easily disturbed or prone to motion sickness should either keep these effects off or play in a well-lit room a good distance from the screen.
• Still in Love is a semi-limited character. This meant that while she is permanently added to the gacha pools, she cannot be chosen with paid 3-star trainee vouchers.
• In Umamusume, Still in Love displays several traits that could be viewed as paranormal or otherwise hard to explain in a rational way.
  • Most noticeably, she possesses traits often associated with vampires, such as:
    • dislike of direct sunlight and hot weather, mentioned in her career to negatively impact her mood.
    • biting the trainer in her character story; although it leaves a mark, the doctor who inspects it deems it to be a bug bite.
    • having her "alter ego" be active during the full moon (in folklore said to amplify vampires' primal urges).
    • her infirmary event has her dream of being a vampire princess being hunted down. She is saved by a knight (played by her trainer), which may be a reference to her mother, Bradamante, whose namesake is a fictional French knight.
  • Another prominent trait of hers that might be hard to explain is her extreme lack of presence. Several times in Still in Love's career and character story, she goes entirely unnoticed. In one of her career endings, it seems that she has been completely forgotten, save for a few people (such as her trainer, Neo Universe and Admire Groove). Other Umamusume who were part of the 2003 classic generation IRL (Neo Universe, Admire Groove, and Zenno Rob Roy) are consistently able to notice her without the difficulty others have.
• She has a habit of eating very slowly. This is a trait the real life horse also possessed, with her jockey mentioning "she took a while to eat, but always finished her fill."
• She has a strong preference for historical novels. Her mother is a novelist. Still herself isn't told what her mother's novels will be about, so she looks forward to them.
• She adores various cafés, taking the trainer to her favorite places on several occasions during her career.
• Instead of fear, she mentions feeling at peace in haunted houses.
• During her "Sleep Deprived" event, she stays up late due to being busy writing about her feelings for the trainer in her diary.
  • This diary is also mentioned in her career, where she tells trainer about how every day she writes down a thing she wants to do in the future.
• During the Classic Year summer camp, right before Shuka Sho, Admire Groove and Still in Love hold a mock race. Admire Groove wins it, and the spectators start talking about how she will probably win the Shuka Sho.
  • This is a direct reference to the real life 2003 Rose Stakes (GII), a preliminary race for the Shuka Sho. Still in Love was the 1st favorite, followed by Admire Groove. Despite that, Admire Groove won, with Still in Love placing in 5th. This caused Still in Love to be the 2nd favorite for her last Triple Tiara race as well, making her the 2nd favorite in all of the Triple Tiara races she ran.
• In chapter 2 of Still in Love's character story, she participates in a mock race. She is given the number 5 and takes last at 17th place. This is a reference to the IRL Still in Love's final race, the 2005 Fuchu Himba stakes, which shares the same number and placement.
• In No Reason's career, Still in Love appears to ask No Reason to take a member of her family who is interested in the Soma Nomaoi under her wing. This is a reference to the IRL Still in Love's only foal, Judah, who participated in the Soma Nomaoi after he retired from racing.
• In the event that Still in Love wins the Complete Triple Tiara in her career (Fillies' Revue, Flora Stakes, and Rose Stakes in addition to the Triple Tiara), an unnamed Umamusume with bluish hair approaches Still in Love and her trainer to congratulate Still in Love and ask the trainer to also guide her in the future. She comments that Still in Love and the trainer seem like they've been tied together by the red thread of fate. This Umamusume is a reference to Akai Ito (whose name refers to said red thread of fate), who won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup with Miyuki Hideaki as her jockey in 2021.
