The Love of the Triple Tiara filly and her jockey
The Love of the Triple Tiara filly and her jockey

If I'd never won a G1 with this horse, I might have never won one, and I might not have still been a jockey right now. She was a huge turning point. She sustained my life as a jockey. I feel nothing but gratitude towards Still in Love.
― Hideaki Miyuki, Nikkan Sports article[1]

Still in Love was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2002 to 2005. She was the second racehorse to achieve the fillies' Triple Tiara, 17 years since Mejiro Ramonu won the prestigious feat on 1986, and the first one to win after the last leg was changed to the Shuka Sho. She is also the only mare to win all of the fillies' Triple Tiara races as the second most popular horse, with Admire Groove being the most popular.

Name Origin

Her name is an indirect reference to her mother Bradamante, named after a character from the Italian romantic epics Orlando Innamorato and Orlando Furioso. In the story, Bradamante, a female Christian knight, fell in love with Ruggiero, a Saracen warrior.

Racing career

Pre-debut

In 2003 (3 years old)

Retirement

Still in Love became a broodmare after retiring, giving birth to her first and only foal with King Kamehameha on 2nd February, 2007.[2]

On July 25 of the same year, she developed an abdominal pain caused by intestinal torsion, and underwent through surgery. She later relapsed on 28th due to necrosis at her intestines and had to go through another surgery to remove them. On August 1, she had another relapse, and due to the physical deterioration caused by previous surgeries on short timespan, she died on the morning of August 2. The cause of her death was intussusception, an intestinal obstruction caused by a part of the small intestine slipping inside.[3]

Honors

  • Fillies' Triple Crown (2003)
  • JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Filly (2003)

Trivia

  • Still in Love is inbred 3x3 to Hail to Reason and 4x5 to Almahmoud. This 3x3 cross is suspected to be one of the reasons for her mental decline following her win at the Japanese Oaks that persisted throughout the rest of her career.
  • After losing the Tulip Sho, Still in Love's jockey - Hideaki Miyuki, was so scared of being scolded and replaced by her trainer Jouichi Matsumoto, that he had thoughts to elope with Still in Love.[4]
    • This likely inspired the Umamusume Still in Love's personality.
  • Still in Love, along with Daring Tact, are Triple Tiara winners that never won another race after their win in the Shuka Sho and retired without furthermore wins.
    • Mejiro Ramonu also never won a race after achieving the Triple Tiara and retired, but at that time, the final leg of the Triple Tiara was the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, as the Shuka Sho wasn't inaugurated yet.
    • Liberty Island's situation was similar, but instead of retirement, her career ended prematurely and she was euthanized after a poor prognosis diagnosis in the Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth II Cup.
  • She was said to "look a little bad for a filly", lacking the glamorous presence other mares seemed to have. This was due to some skin problems and other appearance-related issues the horse seemed to have.[5]
