100 Bucephaluses of the 20th Century[1]

Nice Nature was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1990 to 1996. He was dubbed the "Bronze Collector" due to his multiple 3rd-place finishes throughout his career.

Name Origin

Racing career

Pre-Debut

Nice Nature was born on April 16th, 1988 at the Watanabe Ranch in Urakawa, Hokkaido. According to the owner of the ranch, Watanabe Kazuma, Nice Nature was average as a foal and didn't stand out in the training ranch. Nevertheless, he vaguely saw potential in the horse, in part due to his sire, Nice Dancer, having six major wins in Canada, and his owner Toyoshima Masao made a deposit to purchase the horse.[2] His trainer, Matsunaga Yoshiharu, also had the impression Nice Nature was a "good horse" whose training was moving in a "good direction".[3]

At the racing age of 3 in 1990, Nice Nature was transferred to the Ritto Training Center. He would debut relatively late for a race horse in December 1990, as he had been trained carefully following his older sister suffering a career-ending injury.[2]

Career

Nice Nature would achieve his first of many third places in the 1991 Wakagoma Stakes OP race in 1991, with Tokai Teio achieving third in the same race and in turn sparking a rivalry between the two. He would achieve his first graded win that same year in August with the G3 Kokura Kinen. Following this, he would win G2 races Kyoto Shimbun Hai and Naruo Kinen. Nice Nature would finish 4th in his first G1, the 1991 Kikka Sho, before achieving his first G1 third in the 1991 Arima Kinen. Nice Nature would go on to have an extensive career of six years, competing with an larger than average number of horses, many who would go onto also be featured in Umamusume. He would compete in a total of 16 G1 races, which was a record at the time.[4]

While he would never win a G1, Nice Nature would achieve 4 G2 wins, with a total of 8 bronzes in JRA races. He would place third in the Arima Kinen for three years in a row in 1991, 1992 and 1993, becoming the first horse to achieve triple consecutive thirds at a G1 race, with Narita Top Road being the only other horse to do the same thing with the 2000, 2001 and 2002 Tenno Sho Spring.

In his late career, Nice Nature would struggle with problems on his right foreleg. While there were plans for the horse to race in the 1996 Arima Kinen, his leg issues made such risky, particularly following the discovery of a minor fracture. His stable hand Hideki Baba would also firmly oppose Nice Nature entering the race, being close with the horse and supposedly worried due to the fatal fall of Rice Shower during last year's Takarazuka Kinen. Because of this, it was decided the horse should not race and instead retire. Despite having never won a G1, his extensive career and consistent high placings meant the horse had high total earnings that were nearly equal to Tokai Teio's, who won multiple G1s.

Retirement

Nice Nature was sent to Hidaka Stallion Station to stand at stud and would sire 17 registered horses, before retiring from stud duty in 2001.[5] He would spend the rest of his years at Watanabe Ranch, the same farm that he was bred from. He would be the poster horse to announce the introduction of Quinella Place betting in JRA races in 1999.

In his retirement, Nice Nature became the advertising leader of the Retired Horse Organization, a not-for-profit organization. Every year on his birthday, April 16th, a birthday donation was held to help him and other retired horses. Following the release of Umamusume: Pretty Derby in 2021, donations would spike greatly[6], with fans continuing to donate large amounts of money in 2022 and 2023. The donation was gathered 74 million yen in 2023, surpassing Nice Nature's winnings in the Takamatsunomiya Hai.[7]

Nice Nature would pass away at the age of 35 on May 30th, 2023. Prior to his passing, he was the oldest living JRA winner horse.
