Matikanetannhauser was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1991 to 1995. He won multiple G2 races while going up against some of the greatest racehorses of his generation, such as Mihono Bourbon and Rice Shower.

He was known for his withdrawals from the 1994 Japan Cup and Arima Kinen, due to nosebleeds and hives, rumored to have come from eating a spider, but made a comeback coming first against Hishi Amazon six months later in the 1995 G2 Takamatsunomiya Hai.

Name Origin

The crown name Matikane allegedly comes from Mount Machikane,[1] a mountain in the region of Osaka where the owner, Masuo Hosokawa,[2] is from.

Each year of Matikane has a different theme to the naming scheme,[3] with Tannhauser being from the 1991 "Music" theme originating from Wilhelm Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture.[4]

The original Tannhäuser (タンホイザー tanhoizaa) in Japanese has a long tone double a dash at the end, but the max character length for registered horse names is 9 Japanese characters, so it was cut for Matikanetannhauser (マチカネタンホイザ machikanetanhoiza) without the dash marking the long tone.

Similarly, Matikane is spelled "Matikane" instead of the more common romanization "Machikane" due to the rule that alphabetical horse names in registered in English also have a max of 18 letters.[5]

Appearance

Matikanetannhauser had a chestnut coat with a distinct star and stripe face marking, swooping towards his right nose. He also had a white sock marking on his right hind leg.

Trivia

  • Matikanetannhauser was noted for the various medical setbacks he has had during his career, to which fans have called him "the Department Store of Sickness" (or the Department Store of Diseases). These ailments consists of but not limited to:
    • Epistaxis during Japan Cup: During the 1994 Japan Cup, Matikanetannhauser was set to run, however the horse had a nose bleed. Due to Japan laws, a nosebleed before a race starts means the horse is automatically withdrawn from the race to protect the horse's health, so Matikanetannhauser was scratched from the race.
    • Urticaria during Arima Kinen: During the Arima Kinen, prior to the race's start, Matikanetannhauser had a severe allergic reaction, developing hives. His body was covered in bumps and could not compete, and was also scratched from the race, meaning he had back-to-back-scratches race attempts. It was suggested that the horse might have eaten something prior to a race that was mixed with his food or meicine, with some saying it was a spider he ingested.
    • Phlegmon: In early 1995, Matikanetannhauser also had a bacterial infection, a severe inflammation of the soft tissue, forcing him to rest a longer period.
      • Due to this and more illnesses, Matikanetannhauser was forced off the track for 6 months, and never really raced for more than 8 months, until July 1995, when he raced in the Takamatsunomiya Hai, which he won.
  • Matikanetannhauser was also severely unlucky as, aside from multiple medical issues, he was also up against extremely powerful racers from his generation like Mihono Bourbon, and the next generation like Biwa Hayahide.
    • Another bout of misfortune was his win of the Takamatsunomiya Hai. When he won the race, it was still a G2 medium race. However the very next year, it underwent a complete overhaul, being shortened and upgraded to a sprint G1. Not only did Matikanetannhauser miss out on a G1 win by one year, he would not be able to defend his title as the previous year's winner anyways, as he was a medium distance runner and incompatible with sprints.
      • Coincidentally, Nice Nature also won the race in the year prior to Matikanetannhauser, and also never won a G1, so he shares this misfortune.
