Chasing, chasing, and catching up.
I and fans in those days still remember when we found it was a mare, said that it shouldn't be expected in Arima Kinen, and what's more she was three years old.
When I heard a word 'one-on-one' in Umamusume, I thought 'I see. She wanted a one-on-one fight with him. It is an interesting choice of word.'
But she couldn't fit her body to him... I watched the race again, and I was sure it had been a one-on-one.
Despite being said mares couldn't rival sires, Amazon challenged Brian to a head-on fight.
Only Amazon challenged Brian in the year, who was the strongest in Japan's horseracing history, to a showdown, and tried to catch him up.
So she is still called ―― the Amazon.
Tokyo Sports note[1]

Hishi Amazon was an American-bred, Japanese-trained racehorse that was active from 1993 to 1996. She won nine graded races over the span of her career. Though her G1 wins were all filly-limited races, she defeated many stallions in G2 and G3 races.

Name Origin

Crown name "Hishi" is from the owner Masaichiro Abe. "Amazoness" (アマゾネス, amazons), named after the female warriors in Greek Mythology, was rejected, so the name was settled to be "Amazon" (アマゾン).[2]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (1993)

Hishi Amazon made her debut on September 19th in a 1,200-meter dirt race on Nakayama Racecourse. After winning her maiden race, she entered the Platanus Sho on October 24th, where she placed 2nd. A month later, on November 13th, she entered the Keisei Hai Sansai Stakes (G2), where she placed 2nd once more. However, on December 5th, she was entered into the Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes (G1),[Note 1] where she dominated the field and won by five lengths, marking her first G1 win. For her victory, she was awarded the JRA Award for Best Two-Year-Old Filly.

Three-year-old season (1994)

At the time, foreign horses were not allowed to compete in the classic races, so Hishi Amazon mainly ran G2 and G3 races that were open to her. While she lost the Keisei Hai (G3) on January 9th and placed 2nd, she went on to have a win streak for six races in total. Weeks later, on January 30th, she won the Daily Hai Queen Cup (G3). Months later, on April 16th, she won the Crystal Cup (G3), and won the New Zealand Trophy Yonsai Stakes (G2) on June 5th.

After nearly four months of rest, Hishi Amazon won the Rose Stakes (G2) on October 23rd. A few weeks later, on November 13th, she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, the final leg of the Triple Tiara at the time.[Note 2]Racing from behind, she won the race, claiming her second and final G1 victory. Her final race of the year was the Arima Kinen, where she challenged multiple colts, including the Triple Crown winner of the year, Narita Brian. Though she placed 2nd to Narita Brian by two lengths and a half, her victories throughout the year awarded her the JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Filly.

Four-year-old season (1995)

While Hishi Amazon was temporarily sent to America to compete in races, a leg injury forced her to return back to Japan before being and to compete in the Santa Ana Handicap.[3] On July 9th, she returned to compete in the Takamatsunomiya Hai (1995), where she placed 5th in spite of being the overwhelming favorite and lost to Matikanetannhauser.[Note 3] However, she won the Sankei Sho All Comers (G2) on September 18th, and the Kyoto Daishoten (G2) weeks later on October 8th. She then lost the Japan Cup, placing 2nd to the German horse Lando on November 26th. In her final race of the year, she lost the Arima Kinen to Mayano Top Gun on December 24th, placing 5th.

Five-year-old season (1996)

Hishi Amazon only competed in three races in 1996, and lost all of them. On June 9th, she placed 10th in the Yasuda Kinen, the lowest placement in her career. Months later, on November 10th, she challenged the Queen Elizabeth II Cup for the second time, where she crossed the finish line in 2nd place but was disqualified and demoted to 7th place. Her final race was the Arima Kinen, where she lost to Sakura Laurel and placed 5th.

While there were plans to have her continue racing in 1997, tendonitis in her right front leg halted those plans, and she was retired from racing.

Retirement and Death

She initially became a broodmare at Dewa Farm. She was first bred to Hishi Masaru, a son of Secretariat owned by the same owner. Later that year she returned to the United States to reside at Taylor Made Farm, her place of birth, in Kentucky. She would be bred to American stallions, but the foals would be sent back to Japan to race. In 2011, after having her last foal, she retired from breeding duty and moved to Polo Green Stable. On the night of April 15th, 2019, she passed away due to old age at the stable.
