Dyna Actress was a Japanese racemare active from 1985 to 1988. She was a well-known sprinter and won two JRA awards.

Name Origin

Dyna was a title of the owner, and Actress was a nod to Yoko Minamida, an actress who invested in the horse.

Racing career

Early life

Even as a young foal, she was said to have a very bad temper. Riding her was "unbearable" and "like a rodeo" because she often threw people off, according to Masatoshi Goto who was training her at the time.

3-year-old (1985)

On August 11, she won her debut race by 5 lengths, at Hakodate racecourse.

Next, she won the Suzuran Sho by 6 lengths, and the Hakodate Three-Year-Old Stakes by 5 lengths.

The season ended there, due to concerns about her ability to run in 'the deep pipes' (?). But with her overwhelming speed, the owner thought about entering her in the Satsuki Sho and Nippon Derby next year, against colts.

4-year-old (1986)

A different decision was made: to go down the classic filly route, and challenge Mejiro Ramonu who was the previous year's 3-year-old champion filly.

Things went badly at the Sumire Sho (a preliminary race for the Oka Sho), however. She kept refusing to enter the gate, kicking and panicking and somehow climbing up on the platform next to the gate. Eventually the race started, but she ran badly and finished last.

After this display of poor behavior, the JRA suspended her for a month, and ordered a re-examination of her training. It was no longer possible to enter the Oka Sho.

Next, the team prepared her for the Yushun Himba (Oaks) with training at Tokyo racecourse. She didn't like the change of environment and was very stressed by the gate training, and became ill.

Eventually she did compete against Mejiro Ramonu in the Sanspo Prize for Four-Year-Old Fillies Special (Oaks Trial, GII) and finished 2nd.

She raced against Ramonu again in the Yushun Himba (Oaks, GI) and finished 3rd.

In the autumn, she was due to challenge Ramonu a third time in the Rose Stakes (GII), but suffered a hip injury while training for the race.

Actress' 4-year-old season ended here, while Ramonu went on to win the Triple Crown for fillies, for the first time in history.

5-year-old (1987)

After a 6-month break, she returned in the Keio Hai Spring Cup (GII), finishing 2nd behind Nippo Teio.

Next, she struggled in the Yasuda Kinen (GI) due to heavy ground, but managed to finish 5th.

Her bad temper flared up again in the Hankyu Hai (GIII), and she finished 14th due to rebelling against her jockey.

In the autumn, she got a new jockey for the Keio Hai Autumn Handicap (GIII). she won with a record time of 1 minute 32.2 seconds, the joint world record for 1600m turf races.

She won again in the Mainichi Okan (GII), defeating top male horses.

However, in the Tenno Sho (Autumn, GI) she struggled again with heavy ground, and finished 8th.

Her next race was the Japan Cup (GI) in November. Nippo Teio went to the Mile CS instead, and other top local representatives, Merry Nice and Sakura Star O, also skipped the race, so the favorites were all foreign horses. Actress was the 9th favorite but finished 3rd, the best result for any Japanese horse yet.

In December, it went the other way: 2nd favorite but finished 7th in the Arima Kinen (GI).

At the end of the year, her overall good performance was recognized, and she won the JRA Award for Best Five-Year-Old or Older Filly.

6-year-old (1988)

In March, she won the Sprinters Stakes (GII) at Tokyo racecourse.

Then she challenged Nippo Teio once again in the Keio Hai Spring Cup (GII), and won this time.

She finished 2nd behind Nippo Teio in the Yasuda Kinen (GI) after that, though.

In the autumn, she competed with Oguri Cap and Sirius Symboli in the 39th Mainichi Okan (GII). However, she was kicked by Symboli before the race started. She wasn't injured, but finished 5th.

Next she competed with Tamamo Cross and Oguri Cap in the Fall Tenno Sho (GI) and finished 4th.

She was due to race in the Japan Cup again, but showed signs of leg fatigue and was retired.

Her overall good performance (two major wins and 2nd place in a GI) earned her the JRA award again this year.

Retirement

She became a broodmare at Shadai Farm and produced 12 foals. Her first foal, Stage Champ, and second foal, Prime Stage, both went on to win 2 graded races. Her other foals have had many successes in the generations since.

She retired from breeding in 2005, and died on March 1, 2012, at the age of 29.

Honors

In 1987 and 1988, she won the JRA Award for Best Five-Year-Old or Older Filly.
