Legend Teio was a Japanese racehorse active from 1986 to 1989.

Name Origin

The Japanese word Teio, meaning 'monarch', is derived from his mother Royal Hive, an English mare.

Racing career

3-year-old (1986)

His debut race was in January at Tokyo racecourse. He finished 3rd.

He tried again in February, and won this time.

In May, he won a "middle distance special" race, also at Tokyo.

His first graded race was later in May, the Nippon Derby (GI). He finished 15th.

In July he won the Margaret Prize at Fukushima racecourse.

In September he won the 40th Saint-Lite Memorial (GIII) at Nakayama racecourse.

In November he raced in the 47th Kikuka Sho (GI) at Kyoto racecourse, and finished 17th.

In December he raced against Mejiro Ramonu in the 31st Arima Kinen (GI) at Nakayama racecourse, and finished 6th.

4-year-old (1987)

In March he finished 3rd in the 61st Nakayama Kinen (GII).

In April he finished 6th in the 35th Nikkei Award (GII) at Nakayama racecourse.

In October he raced with Nippo Teio and Sirius Symboli in the 38th Mainichi Okan (GII) at Tokyo racecourse. He finished 5th.

On November 1, he again raced with Nippo Teio and Sirius Symboli in the 96th Tenno Sho (Autumn) (GI) at Tokyo racecourse. He finished in 2nd place behind Nippo Teio.

5-year-old (1988)

In March he finished 5th in the 62nd Nakayama Kinen (GII).

On October 9, he was meant to race against Oguri Cap, Sirius Symboli, Dyna Actress, Running Free, Fresh Voices and Bold Northman in the 39th Mainichi Okan (GII) at Tokyo racecourse. However, an incident occurred in the paddock before the race. Sirius Symboli started behaving violently towards the other horses. Legend Teio was kicked, and withdrawn from the race.

On October 30, he raced against Oguri Cap, Tamamo Cross, Sirius Symboli, Dyna Actress, Running Free, Bold Northman and Kailas Amon in the 98th Tenno Sho (Autumn) (GI) at Tokyo racecourse. He finished 3rd, behind Tamamo Cross and Oguri Cap.

On November 20, he raced against Sunny Swallow in the Copa Republica Argentina (GII) at Tokyo racecourse. He won.

In December, he raced against Oguri Cap, Tamamo Cross, Super Creek, Soccer Boy, Running Free, Sunny Swallow and Fresh Voices in the 33rd Arima Kinen (GI) at Nakayama racecourse. He finished 12th.

Retirement

In 1990, he became a breeding stallion. He sired many foals, including 72 in his first year, the highest ever number for a new breeding stallion. None of them became especially famous, though.

In May 1999, he retired as a breeding stallion. His fate after that is unknown.
