Mejiro Bright was a Japanese racehorse who was active from 1996 to 2000. He was known to be a late-response horse who reacts to his jockey's instructions slowly. He ran long-distance graded races, and was the final horse bred by Mejiro Farm to win a Tenno Sho with a victory at the 1998 Tenno Sho Spring.

Name Origin

"Mejiro" from owner and breeder Mejiro Farm. In 1994, the horses produced were named after nicknames of limited express trains. "Bright" was taken from "Kagayaki" (meaning shine), a train between Kanagawa and Nagaoka. [1]

Retirement and Death

After retirement, Mejiro Bright became a stud horse, resting at Arrow Stud in Shizunai (now Shinhidaka), Hokkaido, and began breeding in 2001. His first foals were born in 2002 and became eligible to race in 2004. On December 1, 2007, Makihata Cyborg won the Stayers Stakes, becoming the first graded stakes winner among his progeny and achieving a father-son double victory.

In 2003, he was transferred to Big Red Farm in Niikappu, Hokkaido, to continue his stud career.

On May 16, 2004, Mejiro Bright died at the age of 10. He suffered from a heart attack after a breeding session and passed away.

Trivia

  • Unlike his Umamusume portrayal, Mejiro Bright was known to be a temperamental horse in real life.
    • During the 1998 Takarazuka Kinen, an episode happened where Mejiro Bright threw a tantrum while Silence Suzuka was entering the gates. Which startled Mejiro Dober and Going Suzuka, in addition to causing his jockey to fall off his back. He was then pulled away from the gate to calm down.[2]
    • According to Ryuseisha's "Ano Uma wa Ima? Guide 2002-2003"[Note 1], Mejiro Bright would often get in fights with Tamamo Cross (who is usually the one who started the fights in question). Their fights were described to be "so ferocious that no man or horse would dare come close to them".
  • His maiden race was a mile race. However, the pace of the race was so slow that it took about 2 minutes just for the race to end. Mejiro Bright was heckled with insults from the crowd, despite him being the winner.
