Top Gun: Maverick (トップガン マーヴェリック) is the 2022 sequel to the original 1986 Top Gun film about the US Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, of which TOPGUN is the stylized or popularly known name.

Deemed both a commercial and critical success, the film returns both Tom Cruise in the starring role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, now a captain, as well as Val Kilmer as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky – Kilmer's final role before his death in 2025.

In Japan, Paramount and Cygames announced a promotional collaboration with Umamusume, naming Mayano Top Gun, whose namesake horse was named in part after the original 1986 movie, as a special advertising pilot.

The collaboration included the following:

  • An alternate Japanese version of the movie poster with Mayano Top Gun in place of Maverick.
  • The original movie poster being shown on the Tracen Academy notice board inside the mobile game.
  • Mio Hoshitani, Minami Takahashi, Marika Kono and Machico attending a special advance screening on May 10th, 2022 at Toho Cinemas Hibiya and then reacting on a video on the official Umamusume YouTube channel. They also chose what their characters' pilot call signs might be:[1]
    • Tokai Teio – "Step"
    • El Condor Pasa – "Lucha"
    • Silence Suzuka – "Scenery"
    • Mayano Top Gun – "Maya-verick"
  • Mayano Top Gun and Gold Ship singing the first verse and chorus of Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins, which is an opening track both in the original film and in Maverick. Loggins later sent a thank-you message that was shown on a PakaLive broadcast.
  • Mayano Top Gun and Narita Brian commenting on the film and introducing its final trailer.[2]
  • Hoshitani, Takahashi, Kono and Machico attending the film's Japanese premiere in Yokohama on May 24th, 2022 as part of Paramount Japan's event coverage and interviewing both Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer.[3]
    • Takahashi, who speaks English, served as translator, and Hoshitani was given the mission to say Mayano's line "I copy!", but it got switched around with Cruise prompting Hoshitani, "You copy?", to which she responded.
    • The meeting is referenced in the Secret Pride in Mayano Top Gun's biography: speaking to a world-class actor.
