Matikanefukukitaru was a Japanese racehorse that that was active from 1996 to 2000. He is the first and last G1 winner in more than 600 Matikane squadron. His acceleration at the stretch overwhelmed Silence Suzuka at the 1997 Kobe Shimbun Hai, and he won the 1997 Kikuka Sho.
Name Origin
The crown name Matikane allegedly comes from Mount Machikane,[1] a mountain in the region of Osaka where the owner, Masuo Hosokawa,[2] is from.
Each year of Matikane has a different theme to the naming scheme,[3] with Fukukitaru being from the 1996 "Wordplay and Idioms" theme, with the name originating from the Japanese idiom "笑う門には福来たる Warau kado ni wa Fuku kitaru," meaning "Laughter brings good fortune." The phrase was split between two horses, Machikanewaraukado[4] taking "Laughter," and Matikanefukukitaru taking "Bringing good fortune." Machikanewaraukado ran at the same time as Matikanefukukitaru, but ran dirt, putting them in separate races. They are not related by blood.
Matikane is spelled "Matikane" instead of the more common romanization "Machikane" due to the rule that alphabetical horse names in registered in English have a max of 18 letters.[5]
