Twin Turbo was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1991 to 1996. He was a legendary frontrunner whose career predated Silence Suzuka, another legendary frontrunner. Despite having never won a G1 race throughout his career, he had garnered a huge number of fans who were enchanted by his running style.
Name Origin
Twin Turbo is named after twin-turbo charging, a method of boosting an engine using two turbochargers.[1]
Racing career
Three-year-old season (1991)
Twin Turbo started his debut in a maiden race at Nakayama Racecourse on March 2, 1991. His trainer, Takehisa Sasakura, instructed the jockey, Nobuhiro Ishizuka, to let him run how he likes, put him on front, and hold on to the reins. And so, Ishizuka followed the instruction, having the horse to the front out of the starting gate, and won the race by three lengths. He then went on to win his second race, the Mokuren Sho on Mar 24, 1991.
In his graded race, the G3 Radio Tampa Sho[Note 1], jockeyed by Shoichi Osaki again, he delivered excellent performance, pushing Twin Turbo far out in to the lead on the back stretch and giving the horse his first graded win. At that time, this was also Sasakura's first graded thoroughbred victory.
After a midsummer recovery, Twin Turbo's autumn season started with the St Lite Kinen. With Osaki taking the reins, he placed second just narrow from winning from Strong Kaiser. Then the Fukushima Kinen, where the winner that beat Twin Turbo, Leo Durban, was racing in the same track as him. Twin Turbo held him to a neck's length to finish second.

Retirement and Death
After suffering huge losses from running his last six races in 1996, and with his age taken into consideration, his team decided to retire him. He stood stud at Saito Farm in 1997, located in Miyagi Prefecture's Naruko Town (currently Osaki City), with his children being eligible to race in 1998. None of his children had achieved significant success.
In January 15th, 1998, after standing stud for a year, he died of a heart failure, having only sired five children in his short year of stud service.

Trivia
- The real life Twin Turbo performed the Runaway tactic because he was scared of the crowd of horses running with him, unlike how it was depicted in Season 2 of the anime. If he was overtaken, he quickly lost speed due to this. This earned him the nickname of "Renegade".
- His fear of horse crowds and his desperate frontrunning might have been contributors to his early death caused by a heart failure while he was standing stud.
- Despite having never won a G1 race, he entered the Arima Kinen twice due to his popularity, having enchanted fans with his desperate runaway style.
- Twin Turbo and Tokai Teio never raced against each other during their careers, despite the one-sided rivalry that Twin Turbo had displayed in the anime.
- In the present days, Twin Turbo's name was used as a criterion for horses that use the Runaway running style alongside Silence Suzuka by horse-racing fans.
- If a frontrunning horse was able to finish the race without losing speed (even when they get overtaken), they will be compared to Silence Suzuka. If they lose speed, they will be compared to Twin Turbo instead.
