Admire Groove takes the lead - this year again, Admire Groove takes the win! This year again, with her jockey Yutaka Take!
- 2004 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, JRA Official [1]

Admire Groove was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2002 to 2005. She was known for her rivalry against Still in Love who went on to achieve the Triple Tiara, with Admire Groove as the favorite to win. However, Admire Groove won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup two consecutive times in both 2003 and 2004.

Name Origin

Admire is the crown name of her owner Riichi Kondo and Groove is her given name chosen for the horse by her mother Air Groove, which carries the meaning of "invigoration" or "rhythm". Her name was chosen by overwhelming fan votes in a poll.[2]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2002)

Admire Groove made her debut on November 10th, 2002, in a 1,800-meter turf race on Kyoto Racecourse. After winning her debut, she went on to win the Erica Sho on December 2nd.

Three-year-old season (2003)

Admire Groove started the year off with a win in the Wakaba Stakes on March 22nd. Though there were worries that she would be unable to enter the Oka Sho in time, she eventually entered the race on April 13th.[3] While she competed as the overwhelming favorite, not only did she suffer a late start, but she also couldn't catch up to Still in Love, who won the race. With Admire Groove placing 3rd, she then entered the Japanese Oaks on May 25th, where she once again lost to Still in Love and placed 7th.

Admire Groove's first graded victory was the Rose Stakes (G2) on September 21st, 2003. Soon after, she entered Shuka Sho on October 19th, finishing in 2nd place. On November 16th, she attained her first G1 victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup with a time of 2:11.8. She raced against notable thoroughbred mares like Still in Love, who placed in 2nd place, and Tigertail, who was a foreign French thoroughbred that placed 3rd after Still in Love. This was her last race of the year.

Four-year-old season (2004)

On April 4th, Admire Groove lost the Osaka Hai (G2), placing 7th. A month later, on May 29th, she entered the Kinko Sho (G2), where she was unable to catch up to Tap Dance City and placed 5th. However, on July 11th, Admire Grove went on to take a win in the Mermaid Stakes (G3). While she placed 4th in the Kyoto Daishoten (G2) on October 10th, and placed 3rd in the Tenno Sho on October 31st, she returned to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 14th to defend her title, and took 1st place once again with a time of 2:13.6. Other strong contenders in the race were 2nd place holder Osumi Haruka, 3rd place holders Er Nova and Erimo Pixy who had faced a Dead Heat, and 5th place holder Sweep Tosho.

For her efforts throughout the year, Admire Groove received the JRA Award for Best Older Filly or Mare.

Five-year-old season (2005)

However, Admire Groove suffered numerous losses up until the end of the year. On April 3rd, she placed 4th in the Osaka Hai. Due to struggles with the aptitude, she badly lost the Tenno Sho (Spring) on May 1st, placing 11th. On May 28th, she was once again defeated by Tap Dance City in the Kinko Sho (G2), placing 4th. On June 26th, she entered the Takarazuka Kinen, where she lost and placed 8th to Sweep Tosho. After the break, she entered the Tenno Sho (Autumn) on October 30th, where she placed 17th, the lowest in her career.

Admire Groove attempted to win the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in 2005 for the third time, but finished in 3rd place behind the winner Sweep Tosho and the 2nd placer Osumi Haruka. However, on December 18th, Admire Groove then had her final win on December 15th in the Hanshin Himba Stakes (G2). As it was her retirement race, a retirement ceremony was held for her right after her victory.[4]

Retirement and Death

She became a broodmare at Northern Farm, and she gave birth to her first foal in 2006.

She gave birth to Duramente on March 22nd, 2012. Later that same year, on October 16th, the JRA announced her untimely death the day prior to Northern Farm's announcement. The cause of her death was due to chest bleeding.[5]

Her son, Duramente, went on to win the Satsuki Sho and Japanese Derby in 2015.
