Fusaichi Pandora was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2005 to 2007. She was part of Sunday Silence's last crop in 2005, and is known for being the mother of JRA Hall of Fame inductee Almond Eye, a nine G1 winning Japanese racehorse.

Name Origin

Her crown name, Fusaichi, is based on owner Fusao Sekiguchi, a controversial figure in Japanese racing during the 2000s. The crown name is a combination of "Fusao" and "ichiban" (Fusao is number one). "Pandora" comes from Greek mythology, who was the first human woman to be created.

Racing career

2 years old season (2005)

Fusaichi Pandora would begin in her career on November 12th, in a Newcomer race at Kyoto Racecourse. She would win her debut by 6 lengths, making her a contender for her next race in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies.

On December 4th in the Hanshin JF, she would be rated as the 2nd favorite in the race. Pandora, placed in the outer barrier, would stay near the back of the pack for most of the race before making a bid for the lead on the final corner. She had too much ground to make up and would end up finishing 3rd behind the winner T.M. Precure.[1] Pandora would run one more race in a 2-year-old Allowance race on Christmas day, but would finish a disappointing 3rd.

3 years old season (2006)

To begin the year, Pandora participated the Elfin Stakes on February 4th. Thought rated as a 1.7 favorite in the race, she had a troubled run and finished 6th. She then rebounded her form by winning the Kinsenka Sho on February 25th. A month later on March 18th, she ran in the G3 Flower Cup finishing 2nd, earning her spot in the Oka Sho.

On April 9th, Pandora participated in the Oka Sho, the first crown of the Fillies Classic series. Despite her drop in form, she was rated as the 2nd favorite in the race. Starting from the outer gate, Pandora and her jockey Koichi Tsunoda rushed to the front of the pack on a wet track but she quickly lost ground on the final stretch and faded to finish a disastrous 14th.[2] Afterwards, her regular jockey Koichi Tsunoda was taken off the mount and be given to jockey Yuichi Fukunaga. Her next race was scheduled to be the Japanese Oaks.

In the Japanese Oaks on May 21st, Pandora was the fifth favorite after her defeat at the Oka Sho. During the race, Pandora sat mid-pack before making a run on the final straight. Though she would make up ground, she was unable to pass Kawakami Princess, finishing 2nd.[3] After the summer break, Pandora continued to place in races with Fukunaga as her jockey, finishing 3rd in both the G2 Rose Stakes and the G1 Shuka Sho, in the latter race she lost once again to Kawakami Princess.[4]

On November 12th, Pandora contested in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. She was the 7th favorite in the race, behind the favorites Sweep Tosho and her rival Kawakami Princess. During the race, Pandora, once again, made a good run in the final stretch, but a late surging Kawakami Princess denied of her victory, placing 2nd. However, after a steward's review that declared that Kawakami Princess had blocked Yamanin Sucre in the final stretch, Pandora was declared the winner after Kawakami Princess was demoted to 12th.[5] This event made the 2nd time in 15 years in the JRA that a horse was promoted to win a G1, with the last horse, Prekrasnie, being promoted over Mejiro McQueen in the 1991 Tenno Sho (Autumn). This win also gave Pandora's sire, Sunday Silence, a G1 winner in every crop he produced. Pandora ran again a week later in the Japan Cup, finishing 5th behind the Horse of the Year recipient Deep Impact.

4 years old season (2007)

In her first race of the year on February 28th, Fusaichi Pandora ran in the Jpn2 Empress Hai, a dirt race. She finished 2nd, but her form dipped afterwards, losing her next 4 races in the year. She made a comeback in the winner's circle after winning the G2 Sapporo Kinen on September 2nd. After an 11th place finish in the G3 Elm Stakes, she ran in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup once again with her new jockey Christophe Lemaire, but ended up finishing in 2nd place to the 3-year-old filly Daiwa Scarlet.[6] She ran again 2 weeks later in the Japan Cup, where she ended up in 9th place.[7]

Retirement

After the Japan Cup, it was announced that Fusaichi Pandora would run her last race in the Arima Kinen. However, a day before the race, it was announced that Fusaichi Pandora ended up withdrawing due to lameness in her left hip.[8]

Breeding career

Fusaichi Pandora was sent to Northern Farm where she became a broodmare. She would give birth to her first foal on February 20th 2009, a colt by Symboli Kris S. Fusaichi Pandora would go on to have nine foals in total before her death on October 28th, 2017.[9]

After her death, her foal by Lord Kanaloa, Almond Eye, won the Shinzan Kinen on January 8th, 2018. Almond Eye ended up to win nine G1 races in Japan, becoming one of Japan's greatest racehorses and becoming the first Japanese horse to win nine G1 turf races.[10]
