Peter Pan Stakes (2008)

Casino Drive was an American-bred, Japanese-trained racehorse that was active from 2008 to 2011. After being bought for $950,000 USD at the 2006 Keeneland Sale, he would be imported to Japan, and raced once before traveling to America and winning the G2 Peter Pan Stakes.

Name Origin

His officially registered name meaning is 一攫千金の旅 (Get rich quick journey). It's likely Casino Drive's name was inspired by his older half-sister, Rags to Riches.[1]

Racing career

Three-year-old season (2008)

Casino Drive was expected to debut as a two-year-old, but he suffered from phlegmon after a training incident in June 2007. His debut was delayed to early 2008, where on February 23rd, he mad his debut over 1,800 meters on dirt at Kyoto Racecourse. Piloted by jockey Yutaka Take, he won his debut by 11 1/2 lengths.

Due to the dominant nature of his win, many fans hoped he would go to the United States and run in the Belmont Stakes, after his half-siblings Jazil and Rags to Riches won the race in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto and trainer Kazuo Fujisawa agreed to send Casino Drive to compete in the Belmont Stakes. Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for the owner of Casino Drive, said this to the New York Times: “Since Rags to Riches won last year, we felt we have to be here. It’s sportsmanship. We think this is important for the sport. The owner’s main business is entertainment. He likes to entertain people.”[2]

Casino Drive was planned to have one more race in Japan before going overseas, but due to an influenza outbreak[3], he was shipped to the US on April 30th. He was entered into the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park, using the race as a trial for the Belmont. Needing a jockey, trainer Fujisawa asked Kent Desormeaux to ride Casino Drive in the Peter Pan Stakes. During his time in Japan, Desormeaux was a regular jockey for Kazuo Fujisawa from 2003 to 2005, having won the 2003 Kobe Shimbun Hai atop Zenno Rob Roy. On May 10th, Casino Drive ran in the Peter Pan Stakes (G2), over 9 furlongs at Belmont Park. In the race, he would be in touch with the leaders before making his move on the turn to the homestretch, pulling away from his rivals enroute to a 5 3/4 lengths victory. After the race, jockey Desormeaux praised Casino Drive: “I certainly understand how Jazil and Rags to Riches won the Belmont... Yeah, he can run a lot. It’s going to be fun. He’s a phenomenal talent, and we’ve got our hands full with this one." Desormeaux was already booked to ride Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown for the rest of the US Triple Crown.[4]

In the Belmont, he attempted to make history with three siblings winning the same classic race three years in a row, but was scratched from the race due to a bruised hoof.

Taking a break until the fall, he won an allowance race at Santa Anita Park to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Classic. In the Classic, he set the pace early, but finished in last place in a field of twelve horses.

After his Breeders' Cup disappointment, he returned to Japan to compete in the Japan Cup Dirt, where he finished in sixth place.

Four-year-old season (2009)

On January 24th, Casino Drive began the year with a win in the Alexandrite Stakes by three lengths. As he received an invitation from the United Arab Emirates on February 13th to compete overseas, Casino Drive was set to compete in the Dubai World Cup on March 28th. He was initially set to travel straight there without running any other races beforehand, and was unable to compete in the February Stakes due to the field being full. However, due to the sudden retirement of Daiwa Scarlet after an injury, alongside Roll of the Dice dropping out of the race, Casino Drive was entered into the February Stakes. On February 22nd, he was entered into the race as the third favorite. In the race, he finished 2nd to the upset winner Success Brocken, with the favorite Kane Hekili behind him by a head.

Casino Drive arrived to the United Arab Emirates on March 16th. Nearly two weeks later, he entered the Dubai World Cup. Though he was the second favorite, he finished poorly and placed 8th. On April 2nd, he returned to Japan alongside Vodka and Bamboo Ere, and went to quarantine at Miki Horseland Park.[5] It was later discovered that Casino Drive sustained flexoritis in his left front leg. Because of this, he underwent surgery on May 1st.[6] Due to the recovery time, Casino Drive not only didn't race the rest of 2009, he also did not race a year later, in 2010.

Six-year-old season (2011)

After nearly two years of rest, Casino Drive returned to compete in the open-class Nigawa Stakes on March 6th, where he placed 9th. Two months later, in May, he ran in two other races, where he placed 3rd and 8th respectively. He was shortly retired after.

Retirement, Breeding Career, & Death

Casino Drive retired to perform stud duty at Shadai Stallion Station in 2011.[7] His progeny made their debut in 2015, and many of them have had success on dirt. His son, Casino Fountain, won the Kashiwa Kinen and the Kawasaki Kinen 2021, and is currently a stallion.

On August 5th, 2019, Casino Drive passed away at 14 years old due to unknown causes. However, his death was not announced publicly until March 2020.[8]
