Air Shakur was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2000 to 2002. He famously grabbed the double crown in 2000, winning both the Satsuki Sho and the Kikuka Sho. However, the huge loss of his generation in the 2000 Japan Cup had lead to him being referred to as part of the "weakest generation" alongside his peers.

Name Origin

"Air" is the crown name for horses owned by Tsunebumi Yoshihara. "Shakur" is from rapper Tupac Shakur.

Retirement and Death

After his retirement in 2002, he stood stud at on Shadai Stallion Station.

On March 13th, 2003, an accident occurred. Air Shakur was spooked while grazing, and suffered a broken left hind leg after crashing into the fences. After a veterinary examination, he had to be euthanized at the age of 6, only three months after his retirement.

Air Shakur's only four children before his untimely death were all fillies. None of his children achieved significant success before retirement. Two of his daughters - Air Fergie and Maji Blanche became broodmares, but their progeny were skewed toward stallions, and as a result, the bloodline has already become extinct.

Trivia

  • Air Shakur had a very difficult temperament. His assistant trainers drew from an everyday lottery to see who was stuck training him.
    • Yutaka Take was his jockey for most of his career. He had a very negative opinion about Air Shakur's terrible temper, saying, "He was a horse that seemed to have collected all the bad traits of Sunday Silence's offspring. He simply wouldn't run straight, and he was extremely difficult to ride" and went far enough to say he would like to "see what's going on in his head".
  • In 2000 Japan Cup, Air Shakur and other three horses from his generation were anticipated by fans to be the ones to end T.M. Opera O's winning streak. However, all four horses were placed in the last ranks, leading them to be named as the "weakest generation".
    • Air Shakur was placed 14th. Meanwhile, his peers 2000 Derby winner Agnes Flight placed 13th, 2000 NHK Mile winner Eagle Cafe placed 15th, and 2000 Yushun Himba winner Silk Prima Donna placed last.
