Fate

To make one wish come true
How much sweat must be wiped away
How many tears must be shed
Much less two or three times
If you want make your dreams come true

But you'll watch and understand
I, the supreme being who rules this world.
I will dodge and deflect
All the rocks and stones you throw at me

Even if I fall, I will not decay
I will leave my hope to future generations
And advance tirelessly into the future
For this is the fate of our bloodline
Our noble yet harsh way of life

Duramente was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2014 to 2016. He was poised to win the Triple Crown with his wins at the Satsuki Sho and Japanese Derby in 2015. Unfortunately, due to his injuries, he was ruled out of the Kikuka Sho. He was forced to retire after racing one last time in the 2016 Takarazuka Kinen.

Name Origin

"Duramente" is a musical term, which means "Harshly" or "Severely" in Italian. It also means "Hard" or "Strenuous" in Spanish.

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2014)

Duramente made his debut on October 12th, in a 1,800-meter turf race on Kyoto Racecourse. He suffered a late start, and placed 2nd. Weeks later, on November 8th, he broke out of his maiden. However, before he could continue racing, he had to redo his gate exam due to standing up inside the starting gate.[2]

Three-year-old season (2015)

On February 1st, he won the open-class Saintpaulia Sho. Two weeks later, on February 15th, he ran in the Kyodo Tsushin Hai (G3), where he lost and placed 2nd. However, he was granted entry into the Satsuki Sho despite the low amount of prize money. Two months later, on April 19th, he competed in the Satsuki Sho, where he ran from the very back. However, he surged past the other horses such as Kitasan Black and Real Steel at the homestretch, and won the race, attaining his first G1 victory. After the race, his jockey, Mirco Demuro, was suspended for four days due to reckless riding during the race due him almost hindering the path of Satono Crown at the final corner.[3]

Granted priority entry, Duramente entered the Japanese Derby as the overwhelming favorite on May 31st. In the middle of the race, he began to gradually accelerate, and by the final corner, he had overtaken the other horses. He won the race, and attained his second and final G1 victory. There were then plans to either enter him in the Kikuka Sho, or the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in the autumn season.[4] However, at Northern Farm, it was discovered that Duramente had sustained two distal fractures, which required surgery. Because recovery took over six months, Duramente did not enter any races for the rest of the year.[5]

Despite the break, Duramente received the JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Colt for his efforts throughout the year.

Four-year-old season (2016)

Duramente only ran in three races in 2016. His first race of the year was the Nakayama Kinen (G2) on February 28th, where he won the race with ease. However, he lost his last two races. It was then announced that Duramente would compete in Dubai, where it would be determined on whether or not he could handle the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France.[6] On March 26th, Duramente competed in the Dubai Sheema Classic, which was his first and final foreign G1. However, his horseshoe on his right front leg came off before the race, and he was unable to replace it before the race.[7] He lost momentum during the race, and placed 2nd. His final race was the Takarazuka Kinen on June 26th, where despite fighting hard in the stretch alongside Kitasan Black, both of them lost to Marialite, and Duramente placed 2nd once again.

Retirement and Death

Duramente was forced to retire three days after the 2016 Takarazuka Kinen, where he slipped while crossing the finish line which caused serious injury to his left foreleg. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed extensive damage to his fetlock, pastern and tendons. Such injury, while not severe enough to warrant euthanasia, cost him the ability to race. If such injuries never happened, it was also planned for him to be sent in France to participate in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

After retirement, Duramente became a stud horse, resting at Shadai Stallion Station in Abira Town, Hokkaido, and began breeding in 2017. His first foal was born on January 15th, 2018, at Northern Farm in the same town. The first crop of offspring became eligible to race in 2020, with a colt already winning a maiden race on June 7. On March 7th, 2021, Titleholder won the Yayoi Sho, and on October 24th, Titleholder also won the Kikuka Sho, becoming the first offspring of Duramente to win a graded race, a G1 race as well winning the last leg of the Triple Crown races, in which Duramente could not participate due to his injury. In 2023, Liberty Island achieved a historic Triple Tiara by winning the Oka Sho, the Japanese Oaks, and the Shuka Sho, becoming the seventh filly in Japanese racing history to accomplish this feat.

On August 31st, 2021, Duramente passed away at the age of 9 due to acute colitis at Shadai Stallion Station.
