Kitasan Black is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2015 to 2017. He won seven G1s, matching the total won by Symboli Rudolf, Vodka, and others. Over his career, he earned 1.8 billion JPY, which at the time was an earnings record for a Japanese horse, as well breaking T.M. Opera O's earning record. He is also the first horse to win the Osaka Hai after its promotion from G2 to G1.

Name Origin

Kitasan was taken from the Japanese Enka singer Kitajima Saburo by putting together the first characters of his first and last name, Kita (北) and Sa (San 三) to make Kitasan.[1] Black was taken from his sire, Black Tide.

Retirement

After retirement, Kitasan Black entered stud service at the Shadai Stallion Station.

He began breeding in 2018 with a stud fee of ¥5 million. His first foal was born at Northern Farm on January 21, 2019. The first crop of offspring became eligible to race in 2021, with a horse securing victory in a maiden race on July 18 in the centrals. On November 20, Equinox triumphed in the Tokyo Sport Hai Nisai Stakes, becoming the first offspring to win a graded stakes race. On October 30, 2022, Equinox won the Autumn Tenno Sho, becoming the first offspring to win a G1 race and becoming the fourth parent-child pair ever to win the Autumn Tenno Sho. On December 25, Equinox won the Arima Kinen, completing another G1 parent-child win. Equinox would go on to win Japanese Horse of the Year twice and be inducted into the JRA Hall of Fame like his father. The success of Equinox led to Kitasan Black's stud fee rising to the highest in Japan, tied by Equinox. [2] On April 16, 2023, Sol Oriens triumphed in the Satsuki Sho, successfully making up for his father's failure to win this race. On June 1, 2025, Croix du Nord won the Japanese Derby, successfully making up for his father's failure to win this race. Additionally on May 3, 2026, Croix du Nord became the second horse to win the Osaka Hai and Spring Tenno Sho consecutively, becoming the first father-son pair to perform the same feat.

Kitasan Black was seen inviting horses from another pasture to race him along the fences, which made him very fit in retirement. His caretakers tried to limit this by making him wear heavier horseshoes, as it is preferable for studs to have a little fat rather than being fit and lean. However, this did not work, and in fact made Kitasan Black even stronger. His caretakers eventually gave up trying to stop him, but seeing an opportunity, they took advantage of this by putting overweight horses in the pasture next to Kitasan Black, who would challenge them to race, and in the process made the overweight horses lose weight.

Trivia

  • Kitasan Black never won against Duramente. He lost both the 2015 Satsuki Sho and Japanese Derby to Duramente, and Duramente was unable to compete in the Kikuka Sho for the Triple Crown due to a leg injury. At the 2016 Takarazuka Kinen, both horses lost, but Duramente finished in second place while Kitasan Black finished in third. Duramente was retired from racing afterward, leaving Kitasan unable to best him.
    • While he could not defeat Duramente himself, Kitasan Black delivered revenge through his foal Equinox. His other foal, Croix du Nord, had even defeated the last crop of Duramente's foals in the 2025 Japanese Derby by winning against four of them - Masquerade Ball (2nd), M's (7th), Feiern Kranz (9th) and Ho O Atman (11th). This also brought Kitasan Black his first Derby win through his descendants.
  • Though it was showcased that Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond were childhood friends and rivals in the anime, the real horses only raced against each other twice. Satono Diamond was also a year younger than Kitasan Black. Therefore Kitasan Black's true "Satono" rival was Satono Crown instead of Satono Diamond, who raced against each other in the same classic year.
    • The choice for both of them being childhood friends was because their fathers were brothers in real life. Kitasan Black was sired by Black Tide, while Satono Diamond was sired by Deep Impact. Both horses were sired by Sunday Silence through the dam Wind In Her Hair, making them full siblings.
  • His damsire was Sakura Bakushin O, who was a champion sprinter. However, Kitasan Black became a stayer instead.
  • Racehorse Kamunyak shares a similar pedigree to Kitasan Black, with Black Tide as the sire and Sakura Bakushin O as the damsire.[3]
