A Toast In My Hand
A Toast In My Hand

I was neither overconfident nor careless, yet luck was not at my side.
I am frustrated, disappointed, angry. "It should have been me", I thought. "I should be the one to drench in the wine of victory."
Today, it is time to get drunk. I'm going to show all of my emotion out on the track, holding nothing back.
After we have given it our all, a toast surely awaits.

Tanino Gimlet (Japanese: タニノギムレット, foaled May 4, 1999) is a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2001 to 2002. He is the winner of the 2002 Japanese Derby, and was a sire that produced one of the greatest mares in JRA history, Vodka. In his later life, he has been known for his penchant habit of kicking fences, earning himself the nickname of "God of Destruction".

Name Origin

A combination of crown name "Tanino" for owner Yuzo Tanimizu, and "Gimlet", a cocktail drink made of gin and lime.

Racing career

Two-year-old season (2001)

Tanino Gimlet made his debut on August 5th, in a 1,000-meter dirt race at Sapporo Racecourse. He finished 2nd and suffered an injury setback that would keep him from racing for the next 4 months. He would comeback to run in a 1600 meter turf maiden race on December 22nd at Hanshin Racecourse, where he would win by 7 lengths. Trainer Kunihide Matsuda began to make plans to make sure Tanino Gimlet is able to earn a spot in the Classic races next year.

Three-year-old season (2002)

Two weeks into the new year, Tanino Gimlet raced again, competing in the Shinzan Kinen (G3) on January 14th. This race marked his first graded victory with famous jockey Yutaka Take, and they won by half a length. A month later, on February 23rd, he ran in the Arlington Cup (G3), where he won by a gap of three and a half lengths. Another month later, he ran in the Spring Stakes (G2), albeit without his main jockey Take, who suffered an injury that forced him to take a two month break. Jockey Hirofumi Shii took over in his place, and he steered Tanino Gimlet to victory in the Spring Stakes by a neck. With his 4th victory in a row, and his third graded victory, Tanino Gimlet headed towards the Triple Crown route as a favorite in the crop.

On April 14th, Tanino Gimlet ran in the Satsuki Sho, the first leg of the Japanese Triple Crown. Jockey Hirofumi Shii rode him again to fill in for the Yutaka Take, but Gimlet was still the favorite for the race at 2.6 odds. In the race, Tanino Gimlet ran in severe trouble; he stuck behind horses and losing momentum. Tanino Gimlet was forced to run outside on the final corner. Though he passed horses on the straight, he ended up finishing in 3rd place, behind the longshot winner No Reason. Fans were furious with jockey Shii for his poor ride, with race commentators stating that "Tanino Gimlet was the only one to have ran 100 extra meters."

Though disappointed, trainer Kunihide Matsuda believed his horse was still talented and wanted to make sure Tanino Gimlet ran in races that would increase his stud value. Known as the "Matsuhide Rotation", Trainer Matsuda strongly believed that in order to increase a horse's stud value, they must win a Grade 1 race at a mile and Classic distance. Tanino Gimlet's next two races were the NHK Mile Cup and Japanese Derby, having only 3 weeks separating each race.

Retirement

After his Japanese Derby victory, Tanino Gimlet was sent to Hokkaido for rest and training over the summer. He returned to Ritto Training Center on August 25th, where he continued training for the autumn season. However, after a training session on September 1st, he developed pain in his left front leg, and after further examination, it was discovered that he had developed superficial flexor tendonitis.[2] Trainer Kunihide Matsuda and owner Yuzo Tanimizu made the decision to retire Tanino Gimlet. A retirement ceremony was held at Sapporo Racecourse on August 24, 2003.[3]

He began to perform stud duty at Shadai Stallion Farm. As a sire, he had success, with his progeny winning graded races. His daughter, Vodka, not only became the first filly in 64 years to win the Japanese Derby, she also won seven G1 races in total, the rest being the 2006 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, 2008-2009 Yasuda Kinen, 2008 Tenno Sho (Autumn), 2009 Victoria Mile, and the 2009 Japan Cup. He also had mild success as a broodmare sire, with his granddaughter Ten Happy Rose winning the Victoria Mile in 2024.

On November 28th, 2013, he was transferred to Lex Stud.[4] After retiring from stud duty in 2020, he was transferred to Versailles Farm, where he lives as a meritorious horse. In retirement, he became notorious for kicking and breaking his enclosure fences. He also passed down this habit to his stablemate Rose Kingdom.

Trivia

  • Vodka's victory at the 2007 Japanese Derby makes her and Tanino Gimlet the only father-daughter duo to both win the race.
  • On January 6th, 2026, Versailles Resort Farm began selling handmade amulets which reused the pieces of fences Tanino Gimlet broke for a limited time. The amulet also has a piece of his mane surrounded by resin. Due to the pieces being made of various pieces of broken fence, each limited amulet was unique.[5]
