No Reason was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2002 to 2004. He won the 2002 Satsuki Sho as a longshot at odds of 115.9. He was notorious for unseating Yutaka Take at the start of the 2002 Kikuka Sho, while being poised as the favorite to win the race. In retirement, he participated in the Soma Nomaoi Festival in Minamisoma, Fukushima. The event celebrates samurai martial skills and horse riding.[2]
Name Origin
A common rumor is that when he was transferred to Yasuo Ikee's stable, he was given the name "No Reason", as a North Hills secretary remarked, "a strong horse needs no reason."[3]
Racing career
Three-year-old season (2002)
No Reason made his debut on January 5th, in a 1,800-meter turf race on Kyoto Racecourse. After he won his debut, he ran in the open-class Kobushi Sho on February 9th, where he won for the second time in a row. However, on March 16th, he lost and placed 7th in the open-class Wakaba Stakes.
Because of this, he initially lost priority entry to the Satsuki Sho, the first leg of the Triple Crown. However, as there was a draw for the race, No Reason won this draw, and he was allowed entry. As the 15th favorite with the odds of 115.9, he entered the Satsuki Sho on April 14th. Running in a good position, No Reason surged past the other horses and won the race, attaining his first and final G1 victory. He then entered the Japanese Derby on May 26th, where he lost to Tanino Gimlet and placed 8th.
After months of rest from a fracture,[4] No Reason returned to compete in the Kobe Shimbun Hai (G2), where he placed 2nd to Symboli Kris S. On October 20th, he entered the Kikuka Sho as the overwhelming favorite, with odds of 2.5. However, immediately after exiting the starting gate, No Reason dropped his jockey Yutaka Take, immediately disqualifying him from the race. Not only did he lose, the 10th favorite Hishi Miracle won instead. He continued to not place well, as he placed 8th in the Japan Cup on November 24th. His final race of the year was the Arima Kinen on December 22nd, where he lost and placed 6th to Symboli Kris S, who won at nine lengths.
Four-year-old season (2003)
No Reason only ran in two races in his four-year-old season. On February 22nd, he entered the Kyoto Kinen (G2), where he finished in 5th place. He then ran in the Hanshin Daishoten (G2) on March 23rd, where he placed 4th. While there were plans to have him compete in the Tenno Sho (Spring), No Reason developed flexor tendonitis, which forced him to recuperate for the rest of the year.[5]
Five-year-old season (2004)
After coming back from injury, No Reason ran in the Asahi Challenge Cup (G3) on September 11th, his first race in almost 18 months. He finished 11th place, but soon after his superficial tendonitis reoccurred. Because of this, he was retired from racing shortly after his injury and was transferred to Yushun Stallion Station.
Retirement
In 2005, he began his career as a stallion, with his first crop debuting in 2008. The performance of his first crop was disappointing and he did not mate with many mares, only receiving 2 mares in 2009.[6] He was retired from stud on January 1st, 2010.
In 2014, he was transferred to Shikagashira Stable.[7] From 2014 to 2023, he participated in the Soma Nomaoi, a traditional event held in Soma, Fukushima.
On May 7th, 2024, he passed away at the age of 25.

Trivia
- Right after unseating Yutaka Take in the 2002 Kikuka Sho, No Reason looked back at Take and attempted to keep up with other horses. Though ultimately, he could not keep up with them and was never seen on camera in the footage again.[8]
