Royce and Royce was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1992 to 1996. He is best known as a "bronze collector", who placed well in graded races despite not winning them.
Name Origin
The initial name proposed was "Rolls-Royce", after the car brand; However, it was rejected by the JRA since brand names are not allowed as to prevent advertising. The name then became "Royce and Royce".
Racing career
Two-year-old season (1992)
Royce and Royce made his debut on December 13th, in a 1,600-meter turf race on Nakayama Racecourse. He placed 2nd, and he placed 2nd once again in his second maiden race attempt on December 26th.
Three-year-old season (1993)
For months, Royce and Royce was unable to win a maiden race, and on May 1st, he was even entered into the open-class Aoba Sho, only to place 3rd. On June 6th, he finally won his maiden race after numerous attempts. He attempted to win a graded race in the Radio Tampa Sho (G3) on July 4th, but lost and placed 3rd.
Instead of resting throughout the summer, he ran throughout the rest of August and September, where he placed 2nd in three open-class races. As he placed well in the St. Lite Kinen (G2), he was granted entry to the Kikuka Sho on November 7th. He advanced during the race, but couldn't catch up to Biwa Hayahide and placed 7th. He then ran in the open-class Toji Stakes on December 18th, where he placed 5th.
Four-year-old season (1994)
While he lost and placed 2nd in the open-class Kumpu Stakes on May 7th, he won the open-class Murasaki Sho weeks later on May 29th. He then lost and placed 8th in the Epsom Cup (G3) on June 11th, but on August 6th, he attained his final victory in the open-class Sarobetsu Stakes. Throughout the rest of the year, he went on to place 3rd in three consecutive graded races, in the Sankei Sho All Comers (G3), Tenno Sho (Autumn), and the Japan Cup.
Five-year-old season (1995)
Royce and Royce continued his losing streak, as he placed 4th in the Osaka Hai (G2) on April 2nd. After a long break, he returned to place 3rd in the open-class Fuji Stakes on November 12th, and he placed 7th in the Japan Cup weeks later on November 26th. He then challenged the Arima Kinen on December 24th, where he placed 7th to Mayano Top Gun.
Six-year-old season (1996)
Royce and Royce only ran in three races in his six-year-old season. On January 21st, he competed in the American Jockey Club Cup (G2), where he placed 4th. His placements only worsened, as he placed 8th in the Nikkei Sho (G2) on March 17th, and placed 11th on April 21st to Sakura Laurel in the Tenno Sho (Spring).
Death
In the summer break, Royce and Royce developed intestinal torsion as he was grazing. At six years old, he passed away due to complications on June 14th, 1996.
