Marvelous Sunday was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1995 to 1997, considered as the top three of seniors of 1997 with Mayano Top Gun and Sakura Laurel.
Name Origin
Marvelous Sunday’s name comes from a combination of his owner’s crown name (Marvelous) and the day of the week that the horse was born on (Sunday). It also pays homage to his sire, Sunday Silence.
Racing career
Three-year-old season (1995)
Though he was set to debut in the autumn of 1994, it was discovered that he sustained a fracture in his right knee after training[1]. In addition, he also contracted colic during this time. Though he survived and recovered, these issues caused his debut to be delayed for months.
On February 4th, 1995, Marvelous Sunday made his debut in a 1,800-meter dirt race on Kyoto Racecourse. Winning his debut by two lengths, he then competed in the open-class race Yukiyanagi Sho on March 5th, where he also won. He was then registered to compete in the Mainichi Hai so he could get a priority entry in the Classic Triple Crown races, but a fracture in his right knee halted those plans. Forced to rest, he returned to the stables in autumn to continue training, but a fracture in his left hind leg caused him to be forced to rest again. He did not race again until the next year.
Four-year-old season (1996)
On April 13th, he returned to compete in the Akashi Tokubetsu, where he lost and placed 4th. However, in May, he won the Kamogawa Tokubetsu on the 5th and the Okehazama Stakes on the 18th. Due to these victories, he was finally allowed to challenge graded races. After he won the Epsom Cup (G3) on June 1st, he was set to compete in the Sapporo Kinen (G3), Asahi Challenge Cup (G3), Kyoto Daishoten (G2), and Tenno Sho (Autumn).
After he won the Sapporo Kinen, Asahi Challenge Cup, and Kyoto Daishoten consecutively, he then competed in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) on October 27th. Fighting hard in the stretch, he could not catch up to Bubble Gum Fellow who was ahead, and placed 4th. Due to fatigue from the consecutive races, the plan to have Marvelous Sunday compete in the Japan Cup was scrapped[1]. It was instead decided to have him challenge the Arima Kinen on December 27th.
While he briefly escaped from the pack during the race, Sakura Laurel quickly caught up to him, and Marvelous Sunday lost and placed 2nd.
Five-year-old season (1997)
After months of rest, Marvelous Sunday returned to enter the Sankei Osaka Hai (G2)[Note 1]. After achieving victory in the race, he was then set to compete in the Tenno Sho (Spring) on April 27th. Marking Sakura Laurel throughout the race, he began to gradually overtake him. However, Mayano Top Gun, who was chasing them both from behind, began to surge past them both and won the race, placing Sakura Laurel and Marvelous Sunday in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
For the first time, Marvelous Sunday was the most popular in a G1 race when he entered the Takarazuka Kinen on July 6th. Gradually advancing within the pack, he began to escape at the final straight and won the race, marking this as his first and only G1 victory. However, he sustained another fracture after the race, so he was forced to rest. Because of this injury, he had to miss out on the Japan Cup once more. Instead, it was planned to have him compete in the Arima Kinen once more on December 21st.
As Marvelous Sunday began to accelerate during the race, Silk Justice, who was chasing from behind, began to catch up, causing Marvelous Sunday to lose by a head. After this, it was originally planned to have him compete in the Hanshin Daishoten (G2) next year. However, he contracted tendonitis in his right front leg, so it was decided to have him retire.
Retirement
Marvelous Sunday retired to perform stud duty at CB Stud. However, after CB Stud went bankrupt in 2003, he was transferred to Yushun Stallion Station. As a sire, he produced King Joy, winner of the 2008 Nakayama Daishogai (G1). His granddaughter, Let's Go Donki, won the 2015 Oka Sho.
While he originally retired from stud duty in 2012, he returned in 2014 to work as a stallion, only to retire again in the same year[2]. He then lived the rest of his life as a meritorious horse, until he passed away at 24 due to old age on June 30th, 2016.
