Determination

Please don't mind me. I have no hesitation, I have no fear, I don't care if the road is rough.
Rather it is you who are lost, you are the ones who are confused and frightened.
Will you go on? Will you just follow? Will you fight to the bitter end?
I am determined to make you all pale.

Aston Machan was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2006 to 2008. She was known as one of the "big three" of the 2007 Classic filly racers, alongside Vodka and Daiwa Scarlet.

Name Origin

Owner Mayumi Tosa combined the famous British car brand Aston Martin, and her childhood nickname of "Ma-chan," officially registering the filly as "Aston Machan."

Racing career

2 years old season (2006)

Aston Machan entered her first graded race on September 3rd, the G3 Kokura Nisai Stakes, and came in first place. She also won the G3 Fantasy Stakes on November 5th. On December 3rd, she entered the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies and came in second place, losing to Vodka.

3 years old season (2007)

Aston Machan started the year with the G1 Fillies' Revue on March 11th, placing first. She went on to lose her next two races, placing seventh in the G1 Oka Sho (won by Daiwa Scarlet) and sixth in the G3 Kitakyushu Kinen (won by Kyowa Roaring).

On September 30th, she entered the G1 Sprinters' Stakes, which had been heavily rained on that day and made the track conditions poor. She took a front escape strategy from the very beginning, which was not planned by her jockey Eiji Nakadate, but he worked with Machan and encouraged her pace. She maintained a lead of three lengths ahead of everyone else and came in first place[2]. That feat also marked her as the second 3-years-old filly to win the race since Nishino Flower in 1992.

On October 27th, she entered the G2 Swan Stakes and placed fourteenth.

4 years old season (2007)

On February 10th, Aston Machan entered the G3 Silk Road Stakes and placed tenth. She was planned to enter the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen later in the year.

Death

On March 3rd, Trainer Ishizaka announced that Aston Machan will not run in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen due to poor health. It was later announced that she had developed colitis-X, a disease of unknown cause and was hospitalized at Ritto Training Center Racehorse Clinic. Aston Machan did not recover and passed away from acute heart failure on April 21, 2008. She was only four years and one month at the time of her death, not yet a fully grown adult.

While there is no identified cause for colitis-X, JRA veterinarian Kiminori Yoshinari suggests "It is caused by psychological factors, developing in horses that suffer from stress."
