Nishino Flower was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 1991 to 1993. She was a successful sprinter of the early 1990s alongside Yamanin Zephyr and Sakura Bakushin O, and became the first three-year-old filly to win the Sprinters Stakes after it became a G1 in 1990.
Name Origin
"Nishino" is a crown name for horses owned by Nishiyama Farm.
Racing career
2-year-old season (1991)
Nishino Flower was originally going to debut on June 8th, but due to soreness in her legs from intense training, her debut was pushed to July 7th. In a 1,000-meter dirt race on Sapporo Racecourse, Nishino Flower won her debut. Since the soreness in her legs was resolved, it was decided that she would compete in turf races from now on[2].
While it was initially planned that her next race would be the Hakodate Sansai Stakes, it was then decided that she would compete on Sapporo Racecourse again due to the rougher turf on Hakodate Racecourse[2]. She competed in the Sapporo Sansai Stakes (G3) on July 28th. Running within the front of the pack, she eventually accelerated in the final stretch and won by three lengths and a half.
Nishino Flower competed in the Daily Hai Sansai Stakes on November 2nd. Due to the temporary suspension of her jockey Masao Sato, her jockey was replaced by Seiki Tabara for the race. She won by three lengths, and this win earned her a place in the Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes (G1)[Note 1] on December 1st. At the final straight, she overtook the horses in the lead and won the race by three quarters of a length. This victory gave Nishiyama Farm their first G1 victory.
At the end of the year, Nishino Flower was awarded the JRA Award for Best Two-Year-Old Filly.
3-year-old season (1992)
On March 15th, Nishino Flower's win streak ended when she placed 2nd at the Tulip Sho and lost to Adorable. After the Tulip Sho however, her jockey Masao Sato felt responsibility for his defeat and lost confidence in riding her, so Hiroshi Kawachi became her permanent jockey[3]. Despite this loss, her placement earned her a priority entry to the Oka Sho on April 12th, the first leg of the Triple Tiara. During the race, she ran in the front of the pack at third place. However, in the final stretch, she began to surge and secure a second G1 victory, winning by three lengths an a half. This victory made it the first classic G1 victory for Nishiyama Farm.
On May 12th, Nishino Flower competed in the Japanese Oaks, where she faced her first major loss. She took the lead as she accelerated in the final corner, but began to slow down as Adorable caught up to her. She placed 7th, and she took a break on Nishiyama Farm during the summer.
She returned on October 25th to compete in the Rose Stakes (G2), where she placed 4th. On November 15th, she challenged the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, the final leg of the Triple Tiara[Note 2]. She lost the race to Takeno Velvet, and placed 3rd. While it was initially considered to have her compete in the Mile Championship instead due to aptitude differences, this plan never came to fruition[4].
Due to performing better at shorter distances, it was decided for her to compete in the Sprinters Stakes on December 20th. Unlike her previous races, Nishino Flower was running at the back, but at the final leg, she began to overtake horses such as Yamanin Zephyr and Sakura Bakushin O, and won the race, making this her third and final G1 victory. This victory also made it the first time a three-year-old filly won the race after it was promoted to a G1 in 1990.
At the end of the year, she was awarded not only the JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Filly, but she also won the JRA Award for Best Sprinter or Miler.
4-year-old season (1993)
Nishino Flower competed in the Yomiuri Milers Cup (G2) on February 28th. Holding off Yamanin Zephyr who chased her from behind, she continued to surge in the final straight and won the race. After this victory, she was entered in the Yasuda Kinen on May 16th. Not only did she struggle during the race, she also got bumped by another horse, adding another disadvantage and she placed 10th[5]. After this, she entered the Takarazuka Kinen on June 13th, where she placed 8th.
After months of rest, she returned to the Swan Stakes on October 30th, where she fought hard to place 3rd and lost to Shinko Lovely. A month later on November 21st, she competed in the Mile Championship that she missed out on the year prior, where she had a rematch with Shinko Lovely and placed 13th, the lowest placement throughout her career.
In her final race, on December 19th, she competed in the Sprinters' Stakes for a second time. Despite accelerating in the stretch, she could not catch up to Sakura Bakushin O and she placed 3rd. She was shortly deregistered as a racehorse, and a retirement ceremony was held for her on January 9th, 1994.
Retirement
She was retired presumably some time after her last race to commence broodmare duties at Nishiyama Farm. After a string of unsuccessful attempts at conception, she was retired from broodmare duties in 2011.
Nishino Flower passed away at the age of 31 on February 5th, 2020, due to natural causes[6].
